Chapter 1

"Ask a girl to the ball!" thought Harry to himself furiously as he left the Transfiguration classroom.

Over the next few days, Harry and Ron were amazed by the amount of girls suddenly apparent to them.

"They're everywhere," said Ron one day in the hall, as groups of girls around them giggled and whispered amongst themselves.

"Rather obvious aren't they Ron," said Harry with a grin, despite still being partnerless.

Ron too, did not have a partner and both were starting to wonder whether they'd have to ask the Ravenclaw ghost to go with them both! However, she too was taken, as Nearly Headless Nick had cornered her and asked her to the ball early on.

With time almost running out, Harry and Ron were playing a game of wizard chess in the Gryffindor common room one night, while Hermione sat buried in her books, occasionally throwing them looks that meant she thought they too should be studying.

"Checkmate," said Ron, as the game ended, with him as the winner.

"Good game," said Harry.

"Blimey Harry, look at the time. I'm going to bed. Are you coming?" said Ron, yawning widely.

"Yeah, in a minute," said Harry, absently.

"Night Ron, " said Hermione, as she scribbled furiously with her quill.

"Night," said Ron going up the stairs towards the boys dormitory.

Harry watched Hermione studying for a minute.

Suddenly, he started. "Hermione...I can ask Hermione to the ball," he thought to himself, surprised it had taken him so long to realise. He opened his mouth to speak, and couldn't find his voice.

"Gosh, I didn't think I'd be embarrassed to ask Hermione to the ball," he thought. He felt himself blushing.

"I'd better ask, she might be asked by someone else if I leave it longer," he thought again, urging his to return to him.

"Harry." Harry had been so busy thinking he hadn't noticed Hermione start to gather up her things.

"Er, what?" he replied.

"Did you have an idea about the egg?" she asked, looking at him.

"No, I was just thinking about something," Harry said.

"Oh, well, I'm going to bed," said Hermione, giving him a funny look.

"Er, Hermione?" asked Harry.

"What," she replied.

"Um, I was wondering, um, whether you'd want to go to the Yule Ball with me?"

Hermione blushed. "Harry, I'd really like to go with you, but I um, can't. I've already said I'm going with somebody else and I can't back out on them now," she said, finishing rather quickly.

"Oh, who are you going with?" asked Harry, disappointed that he hadn't asked her in time.

"Well, I don't want to say, but as long as you keep it a secret I'll tell you."

Harry nodded his agreement.

"I said I'd go with Victor Krum."

"What!" said Harry, surprised.

"He asked me when I was at the library. He said he'd been hanging around there so much wanting to talk to me and I said yes," continued Hermione, avoiding Harry's gaze.

"Okay, well, night Hermione," said Harry.

"Night," she said as they each went to their separate dormitories.
