Seven Days
Donavan stepped towards the briefing room, waiting to here why he had just called. He stepped in, and looked around, Olga, Metnor, Talmage, Ramsey and Parker in a flight suit, he had just backstepped. He remembered now the countless nights he wondered where he went after Parker backstepped, that he was not a living being anymore in the same way. It was better just to not think about it.
"What's up?", he asked in his usual mellow manner.
"Pretty routine, a tanker sunk in off of Monterey, it a bunch of California harbor seals.", said Parker cooly, looking at Olga, rather the low cut blouse she was sporting.
"I still don't know why they made you backstep for just seals. It sounds like another excuse to come back and wreck havoc again.", said Ramsey in his usual distrusting and severe way.
"Believe me or not, doesn't matter, you've got to call Kingfischer Oil Industries and tell them to check tanker 1754 for leaks.", replied Parker.
"We'll get right on it.", Talmage said, standing up and walking back to his office.
Parker walked with Olga and Donovan back to his quarters, where Olga left, and Donovan played trivia with Parker. After the while the discussions eased into family matters, and Donovan had a lot.
When Donovan was 17, her joined the navy, to the dismay of his father. They hadn't spoken since, and it was a sad thing. Parker told him that he needed to speak to his father again.
Later that day, Donovan got a call. He picked up the reciever and said the usual, 'Hello, who is it?' routine. It was his father. They talked into the day and, patched up every hole in their relationship, bringing Donovan to tears more than once.
He was interuptted briefly by a message on his second line, telling him that the oil tanker had no leaks, and was sea worthy.
After words he hung up, and stepped outside to see Parker, grinning from ear to ear. Donovan realized what he had done, and he embraced him, and thanked him.
7 days later, Donovan's father died, and it all became very clear.
The end.
