The Girl

By Ginny Jake

She passed with her head down. Even before she reached the gate, she knew that they'd notice her. She wasn't the prettiest girl, but she was pretty enough with her brown hair in perfect ringlets and her bright blue eyes. Her school uniform was just washed and freshly pressed. She shot a look at the newsies as she walked by. Most of the boys had taken off their hats in common courtesy, and some were openly staring at her with their mouths agape. She looked back down at her feet.

She was startled by her sudden shyness. At school she was easygoing and talkative especially with rich schoolboys. Their clothes were clean and well made. They didn't have to learn to defend themselves as well as the newsboys and would never stand up in a fight with one of the so-called street rats. For a moment she realized that the boys were snobbish and spoiled. Just for a second she wished she could spend more time with a newsy, but she was late for school and had to hurry on her way.

A/N: Short, I know. R/R. I don't own Newsies.
