Snow Blind

I wasn't there for you

The words kept repeating themselves in the mind of the silver and red seeker as he tumbled about like a piece of debris in the violence of the storm.

"Don't worry," he had told his companion.  "We can explore here a little longer.  I know the weather's going to be fine," he had insisted with a smile.

The weather had been perfect then, the sun was out, the sky was clear…He had honestly believed in what he had said.

My love waits for me in the daytime.

Stupid, why did I do that?  He couldn't help but wonder now about his actions.  His sensors weren't picking up any energy signatures; there was simply too much interference.  He was flying blind but still he maintained hope and continued yelling for his companion despite the howling wind.

I can't see you through the snow blind.

He continued to scan the planet's surface, trying desperately to maintain some shred of hope but he felt it die after checking his fuel.  He was running low and if he continued looking for too much longer he'd be stranded for ever.  There was no other option; he would have to turn back.

I wasn't there for you,

You are gone…

No!  There had to be another way!  He *had* to keep looking.  He couldn't leave his friend behind.  Not like this.  It wasn't possible; it couldn't end like this…but reality was fast setting in along with despair.

I wasn't there for goodbye…

The dismal thought occurred to the seeker as he was forced to leave.  He had never anticipated anything like this, and now the action of leaving hurt him in more ways than one.  He hadn't been in the best of shape to begin with, but in achieving escape velocity he suffered severe damage.  As it was he was lucky he didn't turn out worse; his shielding was simply never designed to handle the stresses of breaking a planetary orbit.  Even now in the cold darkness of space he wasn't free from injury as solar wind washed over him continuously; surrounding him as he did his best to find his way back home.  Not that it mattered what happened to him anymore.  Once he had left the planet his life was as good as over.

You are gone.

I wasn't there for you.

Goodbyes are so long.

Somehow, someway he had managed to trace his way back to Cybertron.  Now there was only the simple matter of re-entry.  He could do nothing but scream as he felt the metal of his body melt and burn during re-entry and he could do even less to make a proper landing.  The ground came rushing up at him and before impact a single word entered his mind.

Goodbye.

The world went dark.
