When they tumbled out of the Stargate onto a tropical island with no Carter or Teal'c and a broken DHD, Jack and Daniel were confused. Daniel, who listened to Carter sometimes, decided that there had been a power surge and that the wormhole had jumped to another planet. They would be found soon.
Jack put together a shelter, and Daniel gathered fruit. Then they sat and waited for a rescue team.
At first they sat in silence. When they grew tired of that, Daniel told stories from ancient mythology. Jack told stories from his time in the Air Force. And Daniel told stories from his archaeological digs; and Jack told more stories from his time in the Air Force, the stories he wasn't supposed to tell Daniel. Then they sat in silence again.
Jack was impatient, so he decided to teach Daniel to carve chess pieces. They played chess.
Jack started to touch Daniel - on the arm, on the face, his fingers as they walked, his side as they lay under the shelter. Sometimes Daniel touched Jack back. Daniel said it was psychological. They missed human contact and touched each other to keep from being lonely. Daniel talked about experiments and baby monkeys and teddy bears and robots, and Jack ignored him.
Jack started to kiss Daniel. Sometimes Daniel kissed Jack back. Daniel said it was psychological. They missed sexual contact and used each other to fill the void. When Daniel began to talk about experiments and monkeys, Jack tuned him out even sooner than last time.
Then Jack had sex with Daniel, and Daniel had sex with Jack. Daniel tried to tell Jack it was psychological - that they were the last two people on the planet so they were trying to procreate, but Jack told Daniel to shut up.
Daniel must have listened to Jack, because he didn't bother telling Jack it was psychological the next time. The MALP came through the wormhole, but Daniel and Jack stayed hidden in the bushes, and the MALP swiveled to look at the damaged DHD, but still they stayed hidden. And when the Stargate disengaged forever, neither spoke. Especially not Daniel.
Now Jack wished he had.
When Daniel was sick he didn't tell Jack it was psychological - he told Jack it was biological. The monkey's DNA must be similar to humans, Daniel said. This meant the monkeys had come from Earth, and Daniel was excited. At least, until he realized he wasn't getting better.
Now Jack wished he had asked Daniel why. Jack imagined Daniel. It's psychological, Daniel would say. But Jack couldn't think of the rest.
When Jack dreamed alone in the shelter, Jack saw Daniel's face. It's psychological, Daniel would say, because we loved each other. And Daniel would go on about experiments and monkeys, and Jack would ignore him because he'd heard all he needed.
But when Jack woke up, he knew that's not what Daniel would say, because Daniel wouldn't lie to him.
And one day Jack was hot and couldn't get up. Jack smiled, because soon he could ask Daniel why they hadn't gone home, and Daniel would tell him.
