Hello, this is my first fanfic, so if things seem awkward that's why. This
is just the beginning.
I don't own the characters, just the idea.
It is 6 years after the gundam wing story ends. The boys are in their early 20s, and have dispersed. Some still live in their colonies, but Duo and Heero have moved to an East Coast US city. They both have regular jobs, share a cramped apartment, and live a fairly normal life.
The sun poured into the small apartment through the open window. The sounds of the city also filtered in, dogs barking, sirens blaring in the distance, and music playing loudly across the street. The smell of hot pavement and car exhaust infiltrated the modest room, while fans whirred ceaselessly trying to mix the stagnant air.
Heero sat at the window taking in the scene of summer in the city. All around people were lounging in the scanty shade cast by awnings, and fanning themselves with anything that would create a small breeze. the temperatures had soared into the 90's all week, and the forecast foretold more of the same to come. At least he and Duo had an escape plan.
Duo entered the room holding a long checklist and gazed at the array of gear scattered on the living room floor and stacked high on the sofa. He had been gathering things all day, and now scanned the list noting what was present.
"Ok. so we've got a sleeping bag, check. Tent, check. Rain gear, check. Leatherman, check. Winter coat, check. Wool socks-"
"-Duo, do you really need to bring that much stuff?" Heero inquired, watching him survey his mountain of gear. "I mean, it's summer! Save some space, you're not going to need a winter coat."
"Hey, you never know, Anything can happen in the mountains." Duo retorted.
They had been planning a holiday together for quite some time. They were originally thinking of a remote beach, or lake, but after Duo had seen a documentary on wilderness trekking on the Travel Channel, their plans changed. Heero was a bit apprehensive at first, but Duo ceaselessly hinted at it, and finally talked him into it. While Heero personally thought it would be a bug infested, waste of time, seeing his lover so interested finally changed his mind. And, at any rate it would get him out of this dirty city, and away from his job for a while.
"So, continuing on." Duo went on down the list, "Gloves, check. First aid pack, check. survival gear, check."
"Well," Heero said, "take whatever you want, you'll just have to carry it."
"No problem for me! Hey, it's always best to be safe than sorry."
"I don't know about you Duo," Heero said, rising from his window seat and moving the living room door, "but I've always relied on minimal gear and my own training to get me through, and so far I've been very successful."
"I don't know Heero, the wilderness is different..."
"Wilderness? Ha! There is wilderness left! Everything in the world is now tame thanks to progress. What's left of these historic forests is nothing but game preserves! They are lovely yes, but perfectly safe."
"But Heero, I read last week that a bear-"
"Hnn, you somehow talked me into this, and I'll gladly go -It'll be nice to get out of this hole of a city- but I'll pack how I want to, and I'll take only what I deem as necessary." Heero turned and walked down the hall to the next room to start preparing his gear.
"I guess there's no changing his mind." Duo sighed and packed a few extra clothes.
Please stayed tuned for the next chapter...
Thank you!
