Ephram muttered to himself with frustration. He had just received his math quiz back and 52 was written on the top and circled in red ink. It was sophomore year and if he wanted to ever move onto 11th grade he had to pull up his grades somehow. As the bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Ephram slung his messenger bag over his shoulder and lagged behind his classmates.
As he threw his math book in his locker, cursing under his breath, he thought back to his life in New York, where he never had bad grades and he was always surrounded by people he knew and trusted. Here in Everwood, he felt as though he had no one. Well, almost no one.
"Hey Ephram," Amy Abbott said as she opened her locker, two away from his. Her long blonde hair was in a tight bun on the top of her head, and a large, black duffel bag was hanging from her shoulder. She smiled genuinely at him. The smile that always made his heart flutter. "What are up to today?"
"Oh," he stuttered, regaining himself from the thoughts in his head, "I think I might go study at the library for a little while, I haven't really been--"
"Yeah, I need to study, too. If you wanna wait 'til I get out of ballet, I can meet you there," she interrupted, "Yanno, if you want.." she bit her lip and glanced down at the floor. She was being too forward again, she could kick herself. Maybe Ephram didn't want her to come, maybe he wanted to be by himself, why didn't she think before she spoke? She glanced back up at him, and cocked her head to the side. "But you probably have other stuff to do today anyway." Ephram smiled, and that warm feeling came over her once again. She still didn't know what it meant, it wasn't the same feeling she felt when she was with Colin, but how could she tell? She hadn't felt that feeling in so long..
"N-no, That'd be fine," he said, trailing off, "maybe you could even, help me out..i've been having a lot of trouble in math for some reason.." Now it was he who glanced at the ground. Why was he telling her this? She didn't care about his pathetic life. He went back to emptying books in his locker. Amy nodded.
"Okay, 5?" she asked, slamming her locker shut, "That good?"
"Yeah, sounds great." Ephram smiled again, and Amy felt her knees go weak. She turned to go, clutching her books to her chest, then spun back around.
"The table by the window." she said, backing away. "See ya then." She turned and walked off down the hallway, and Ephram watched her go. He watched her movement, how she glided, and the duffel bag swung on her shoulder, with the weight of her defiant steps.
"The table by the window." He echoed to himself.
Sure he had no one in Everwood, but at least he had her, and at this point in his life, that was all he needed.
He slammed his locked and trudged off the opposite way down the hall, smiling secretly to himself and shaking off the feeling that she always gave him. Little did he know that he gave her the same feeling.
