"Monster?" Toya said, knocking softly on Sakura's door. Cracks of
light were coming out from under it. "It's 11:49, and I know even monsters
need to sleep." There was no response, which made him slightly worried. She
should be slamming the door open, mumbling something about not being a
monster, and asking him why he could be up this late when she couldn't.
A thought occurred to the tall brunette when she didn't come out of the room within the next five seconds. Maybe she was out doing whatever it was that she did, with Tomoyo, the plushie, and That Brat. A strange presence was lingering around the town these days, after all. Right now however, it wasn't as strong as it sometimes was, like with the rain. But it was still there, although it felt like it was laying off for a little bit, at least for tonight. Sakura had been sneaking out at unreasonable hours recently, though; almost every night! Toya couldn't help but shake his head. That, combined with the extra practice that Sakura had been putting in for cheerleading, had worn her out. She barely even had the energy to kick him in the morning. This sleepiness had begun the day that the combined effort of Toya and Fujitaka had barely been enough to wake her up.
Sighing, Toya thought that if it took Sakura that long to respond, then he had to check on her. What if something had happened to her, and she wasn't just outside?
Frightened by the possibility, he abruptly slammed the door open, and found.his little sister, who had fallen asleep at her desk in the middle of working on math homework. He guessed that she hadn't had time to do it this afternoon. Stupid cheerleading practice.
Sighing and running his hand through his hair, Toya spoke to his little sister's sleeping form. "You really work too hard, you know that? Monsters shouldn't work so hard that they get so tired and fall asleep in the middle of their homework." Sakura merely stirred. Sighing again, the man picked her up so he could carry her over to her bed.
"Toya?" murmured a small sleepy voice. The owner of the voice was barely and momentarily awake, and had found herself being lifted up.
Internally wincing, Toya mentally berated himself. How could he have woken her up? On the outside however, he let none of this show. "Yes, monster?"
Yawning hugely, Sakura managed to mutter "M'not a monster." before falling back asleep, and Toya smiled warmly at the girl.
After placing her gently in her bed, Toya pulled the pink comforter up to her chin. He then quietly tip-toed to the door, making sure not to wake her again. Before finally leaving, though, Toya turned briefly and spoke softly to the sleeping Sakura. "Good-night. monster."
