-Chapter 1: The fugitives escape
It was a hot day in Mississippi. The prisoners worked under the blazing sun, which beat down upon them. The sound of hammers pounding rock and sorrowful singing was carried through the wind and was heard throughout the fields. Guards rode on horseback, looking over the fugitives, whipping them for any given reason. Little did they realize that three of them were missing. Kagura, Kagome, and Ayame had escaped. The three prisoners ran through the fields in hope of freedom. This proved difficult, however, since they were shackled together and fell quite often. Still, they continued on, eating whatever and whenever they could. After a long while, they finally came to a pair of train tracks. The train whipped past, but Kagura was determined to get on it. The three ran to catch up to the train. Kagura managed grab a hold of one of the cars and pulled herself up. The other two continued running, desperately trying to get onto the car. Kagura looked around and saw a group of elderly men sitting in the corner. "Any of you guys smithies?" Kagura asked smiling, not realizing that the other two were still running to catch up. "Or, if not smithies per say, were you otherwise educated in the area o" She was cut short due to Kagome falling, followed by Ayame, which dragged Kagura down, off the train, and landing with a sickening thud on the ground before rolling down the slope and into a ditch. "Jesus! Can't I count on you two nitwits?" "Sorry, Kagura." Kagome apologized.
"Well" Kagura looked around. "We'll take off through that bayou and"
"Wait a minute!" Ayame interrupted. "Who elected you leader of this motley crew?"
"Well, Ayame, I would've suspected that you'd be the one for abstract though, but if that isn't the case, then, Hell, let's put it to a vote..or rock-paper-scissors."
"What's rock-paper-scissors?" Kagome asked.
"Let's just vote on it. I'm voting for yours truly!" Ayame snapped, glaring at Kagura.
"Well, I'm voting for yours truly too!" Both glared at Kagome, waiting for her answer.
"Alright. I'm with you guys." Kagome smiled. Kagura was about to say something smart to Kagome, but she heard a squeaking sound, distant at first, then louder. They turned around to see an old man riding on a handcar.
"Mind if we join you, old man?" Kagura asked.
"See if I care." The old man said. As he spoke, it seemed that he never looked at them. This brought Kagura to believe that the man was blind. The three sat on the front of the handcar as the old man pushed the handle up and then down again.
"You work for the rail road, gramps?" Kagome asked.
"The rail roads can shove it up theirs!"
"Have a name do you?"
"Totosai. That's my name. Ask me again and I'll tell you the same."
"What's your name?" Kagura asked.
"Shove it up yours!" The old man snapped.
"See, that right there may be the reason you had difficulty finding employment. You see, in the modern"
"You seek a great fortune!" The old man interrupted. "You will find it someday..I suppose..Though it may not be the fortune you seek. You will see things that may disturb you..you shall see a momo..on the roof of a..cotton house. Beware. For the obstacles may stop you from getting to your destination. Just remember your goal." The group was silent after this. The sound of the monotonous squeak traveled throughout the fields as they moved slowly down the tracks.
