Devi stood quietly outside the 24/7 store, the gun in her pocket weighing down all her strength as she watched him get into his car in her mind's eye, heading toward the 24/7 for a freezy. And conveniently enough , she saw him pulling up in his car, just yards in front of her. He got out and headed for the store, and Devi stepped out of the darkness.

"Hey Johnny!" she called frostily. He looked up over his shoulder and saw her, his eyes widening in surprise.

"Devi?" he asked skeptically, staring at her with wondering eyes.

"What? Get your ass over here Johnny," Devi said loudly, her heart pounding with adrenaline with the horrible task she was about to accomplish.

Johnny neared her, hands jammed into his pockets, eyes looking at her with warm disbelief.

"Are you actually speaking to me, Devi?" he asked.

"Yes Nny, I am," Devi said, secretly fingering the gun to calm her nerves. He looked so happy. How could she do it when he was so happy? Well, it had to be done. If she was going down, he was going first. She was going to make sure of that.

Johnny looked at Devi silently. Those eyes couldn't hide the happiness he felt at even exchanging a few words.

"I have only one question for you Nny," Devi said, moving closer to him.

"What?"

"Why did you try to kill me?"

"I'm insane. I tried to stop it," Nny said timidly. Devi's fingers caressed the barrel of the gun.

"So am I."

"No Devi. You're not."

"I am. And it all started with you and your fucking knives, you little fag," Devi mumbled. Nny looked both hurt and furious at the same time.

"I'm sorry, Devi," he said, hiding his anger at the insults.

"But I'm not mad."

"You aren't?"

"No. If I weren't insane, I wouldn't be able to do what I'm going to do tonight."

"Which is..?"

Devi stepped forward a bit and kissed his cheek. He blushed, but stiffened when she pulled the gun from her pocket. She cocked it. The small sound rang through the dark night. The sleek metal of the gun gleamed in the light flowing out of the 24/7.

"Devi what are you-?"

She placed her hands gently on her shoulders and kissed his lips gently, pulling him into a tender embrace. Her lips graced his for several minutes, and then she pulled away, pointing the gun at him. With her empty hand she caressed his cheek.

"I'm so sorry Johnny," she whispered.

And she pulled the trigger.

Nny's head exploded into a chaos of ruby, and he stumbled blindly backwards. Devi watched him slowly sink to his knees numbly. His blood poured freely onto the sidewalk. He finally sunk to his side, breathing heavily and raggedly, death nearing him.

"I've wanted to be permanently free from you for a long time. I've got news for you Nny. I saw how you turned your life around. You're going to die, and you're going to heaven," Devi said.

"Devi-"

She interrupted him. She flipped the gun around and cocked it, just for good measure.

"And I'm going to hell," she said, the end of the gun pointed at her own temple.

"Devi don't-"

"I told you I was sorry."

And then she pulled the gun's trigger.

"No!" Nny screamed. But his scream was futile. The bullet tore completely through Devi's head, and she fell immediately to the ground, bleeding severely.

Devi's hand reached slowly across the bloodstained pavement and slipped around Nny's.

"I'm never going to see you again, Johnny C.," she said. And before Nny could speak, she went on. "And I'm glad," she added with a contented smile. And then her eyes finally closed.

Nny stared at her.

"Devi?" he asked weakly. There was no answer. And the tears began to slide silently down his face.

His cheeks were still wet when his slow breath stopped and he lay still.
