Playing Cards With Lord Voldemort
It's Friday night at the Malfoy Manor. A table for four is set up in the lower torture chambers. Four hooded figures occupy the table. A game of Hearts is underway. Someone has just made a big mistake.
"You dare give me the Queen of Spades?" a low, hissing voice asks venomously. Burning red eyes are fixed on the person across from them. The convict trembles.
"M-master, I d-didn't know you would be on th-the receiving end of the c- card!" A shaking voice answers.
The red eyes narrow and a hand slips into the robes. A long, dark stick is withdrawn. The convict's eyes are trained on the wand.
"N-no, M-master, p-p-please -"
"Crucio!"
The convict's painful screams echo in the torture chamber. As if on cue, a door to the side opens and another hooded figure enters. The red-eyed figure lifts the thin stick and the convict ceases screaming. The new hooded figure takes his seat, kicking the man aside. Already there is a small pile of figures in the corner, figures who have made a wrong move in the seemingly innocent card game.
The new figure takes up the old one's cards and looks them over. He puts out a card and the game restarts.
Severus Snape watches from under his hood. He is situated at the right side of the Dark Lord. He has lasted throughout the game so far, keeping a low profile and not giving his Master any unworthy cards. He has been watching the people that come and go. So far only the figure on the right side has lasted as long as he has. Severus suspects that it is Lucius - that Death Eater, at least, has the brains not to anger their Master.
The new person is smaller than the others are. Severus suspects him to be someone still in school. Perhaps it's Parkinson. Severus mentally shudders. That girl has no brains whatsoever. Or perhaps it's Draco. This is his home after all . . .
Severus puts out a card. Every turn is another prayer not to anger their Master. He always tries to give the Dark Lord low cards whenever it is time to trade cards. He also always tries not to stare when the Dark Lord's bone- white, long-fingered hands emerge from under the cloak.
The newbie does well. He does not anger his Master. Severus knows that now it's possible the next to go will be Lucius or he. He pays more attention to who receives the Queen of Spades and who puts out the highest card.
Across from Severus Snape is indeed Lucius Malfoy. He's sweating slightly now. It may be he who gets the Cruciatus Curse next. His hands fumble a little as he puts out a card. He glances at the newbie. He's quite certain that it is his son.
The Queen of Spades is in Lucius' hand. If he gave it to Draco . . . perhaps Draco would have the most cards then, and he would lose . . .
He looks back up at the cards that are out. It's his turn. The King of Spades is out, and in the position that Draco would have to put it in. Lucius, smiling a little, puts out the Queen of Spades. He waits for Draco to take the cards.
A bone-white, long-fingered hand emerges and takes the pile of cards.
Lucius looks up. The Ace of Spades is out as well . . .
"Crucio!"
The door opens and another figure walks in. The curse is lifted from Lucius and the new person takes his place. A good-sized pile of figures is accumulating now. Draco smirks from under his hood. Red eyes focus on him and his smirk fades. He puts out a card.
A/N: Just a nice little break from the ordinary. Hope you enjoyed it!
