Sleep Never Comes

Darkness was falling over the city as a bell in a clock tower harshly chimed out 9:00. A young girl was hurrying down the street. She was young, slender, with a cute face, and peculiar but beautiful blue hair. She glanced at her clock struggling to run in her high heels. "Damn these things" she thought, her feet cramping slightly.
She arrived at the bus stop only a few minutes late, but her stubborness to not leave work until she had finished her last task had caused her a three hour long wait until the only other bus that commuted out of the city made it back around.
She sighed, frustrated, and sat down on the bench at the bus stop, rummaging through her purse for her cell phone. She found it a few moments later and dialed and all too familiar number.
"Hello?" came an enthusiastic and bright sounding voice.
"Hey Lita, I'm going to be late, I missed the bus."
"Ami." Lita whined, this is the third time this month. "Can't you leave work at the right time?"
"Sorry, I was running some final checks over a new document and I didn't want to leave until I was sure it was clear." Ami replied, feeling rather sheepish.
Lita laughed on the other end. "You're either a major brown noser or you need to get a life."
"I know, I'll work on it." Ami talked a few minutes longer and then said her good byes, returning her phone to its place. She sat back, crossing her legs, and watched the city streets as they seemingly came alive. Much like a group of dominos falling, the street lamps came on one after another until the full street was illuminated, besides a few alleys and broken lights.
She watched people emerge from workplaces and homes, all bustling with excitement and talk. All seemed to be in couples. Only one lonely figure caught her eye. A handsome young man was standing, under a streetlight, roses in hand. She watched intentively as he nervously kept checking his watch, obviously waiting on his special someone.
Minutes passed and it seemed the young man would give up, when a pair of arms grabbed him from behind. She smiled, lightheartedly, as she saw an expression of relief and happiness spread over his face. They hugged, and the man presented his love with the red roses, who in turn showered him in kisses. Ami smiled to herself as she watched them walk away. She felt her stomach turn, but knew it wasn't hunger or sickness, but jealousy. Out of all of her friends, Ami was the only one to not be engaged, or preparing to be married. Usagi and Mamoru's wedding was, in fact, only a week away. She had just been spending too much time with her work, and not with her personal agenda. Just the same as in high school.
She found herself looking at pictures of her and her friends, smiling and remembering the old days. They had all changed so much. Even she, the shy, meek girl she had once been, had changed to a beautiful outgoing young woman. She had cut her hair and now had long bangs that framed her pretty face, and the rest of her short hair feathered out in back.
She was lost in thought and feeling rather lonely when a bloodcurdling scream reached her ears from a nearby alley. She instinctively rushed to check it out and when she entered the dark alley, she found the young couple she had watched. The man was on the ground, bloodied and barely concious. The woman was clinging to him, crying and staring in horror at a large wolflike beast that was approaching them.
