Daniel faced the white-light. It was more of a sparkle. He was a mere shadow in its majestic presence. He stept closer.
"Hey," The Colonel called from behind, turning him around. "Where [exactly] are you going?"
Daniel felt the question to be more than a punch in the face; worse than swallowing glass. The truth was that he didn't know. It was the path to 'enlightment', whatever that was. He assumed it was some sort of ascension to a different reality, a different realm, where the laws of physics and time were brilliantly twisted from what they'd all learnt in college.
"I don't know," he admitted. That statement in itself was very true, but tinted with deceit nonetheless. He turned back towards the light.
This time he was not interrupted, yet as he approached the path, he felt guilt. He was supposed to be miserable, so miserable he'd just rush in to the new world, but it was guilt - he was leaving everyone he'd ever crossed paths with.
Daniel's nose now almost touched the light. He was leaving the place behind to do more. Maybe less - oh, he didn't know. All he hoped, prayed, was that he could somehow do something better, to counter with all the times he'd screwed up in this lifetime, and also have a chance of seeing Shau'ri again. But was he scared? He had to admit, he was petrified. No, that wasn't even the right word. He moved forward and felt himself sucked in, then propelled into the white.
........
The ward was shimmering with light. Janet, with Carter, O'Neill, Teal'c, Jacob and Hammond, was distraught, barely able to choke out the words, "Colonel . . .!"
The six watched in sheer astonishment around Daniel's still form as his body was devoured into the white, floating effortlessly into the air; spirals swaying into a peaceful dance to a silent rhythm, until finally disappearing into the wonder that was Oma Desala, into her welcoming arms, ascended to the next path, to the next life, for fulfillment, into a world where few were allowed to enter, a place where, once lost, would be found again, to rest in a special place in one's heart, and this time, Daniel's.
