Last Night

By Jane Moss

This was a main priority. Big case. Where was he? Grissom is never late.

Knock. Knock. Knock. – silence.

Catherine looked back at Warrick who simply shrugged his shoulders, trying to cover his genuine curiosity. Catherine's patience was wearing.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK. – silence.

She let her breath out in annoyance. "If he's not here…" she began, trailing off as they heard faint shuffling inside. Both froze to listen more intently. The sound was getting louder and they both stood straight, waiting for Grissom to open the door. When it did open, however, they lost their composure.

The tall brunette rubbed her eyes, and made an attempt to untangle her hair. Catherine? Warrick? Sara at Grissom's? All three stared at each other in silence.

"Aggh… Catherine?"

"SARA?" Catherine smiled in amusement, "What are you…? Did you spend the night here?"

Sara didn't respond, her mind still filled with sleep. She did not catch on to what Catherine was implying. Warrick flicked his eyebrows, nudging Catherine with his elbow playfully.

"OH! Not like that!" Sara threw up her hands, "We were… working… trying to solve that…. umm… missing persons case…" They looked at her suspiciously. "I guess it got really… late…" she added to satisfy their scepticism.

"Well… Grissom's 4 hours late for work," Catherine informed.

"Oh"

"And so are you," Warrick added, a smile still teasing on his face.

"Right," Sara said. "Oh! Come in, come in." They followed her inside, at a distance.

"Where IS Grissom?" Catherine emphasised gently snooping around his place.

"He's probably still asleep on the coffee table" They squinted at her, in more confusion. "I'll go wake him."

"Coffee table?" Catherine mouthed to Warrick, who shrugged and looked somewhere between confused and amused.

"Grissom, you up?" they heard her say in the other room and in a moment he emerged, his shirts creased and his glasses at an odd angle. Sara quickly tilted them so that they looked straight.

"Yeah?" His tone was not all that inviting. Actually, he looked rather annoyed.

"We've got a case," Warrick said after a moment.

"Good. You're in charge of it." Grissom was about to walk back into what appeared to be his living room.

"Wait, man, what you're gonna leave it just like that?"

"Problem?"

"Well, yeah…" Catherine joined in, "we need another person… at least"

"Take Sara…"

"Oh, what? Just like 'TAKE SARA'? What am I a doll, so you can pass me around?" Sara protested. Grissom stared at her blankly. "Don't look at me like that! If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me!" He thought for a moment and smiled. "What's so funny?" she asked now clearly irritated.

"The boss is giving me a day off, but you're still working," he answered with a grin playing on his face.

"Yeah, our boss is a tyrant," Catherine snorted. Sara joined in with a laugh of her own, which sounded more like a huff.

"Hey, you be careful or there'll be a pay cut!" Grissom warned.

"Yeah, whatever," Warrick said leading them out of Grissom's apartment.

"I'll see you tomorrow," Sara said. Catherine turned to listen with interest.

"Yeah, I'll have the case report ready for you, by then," Grissom answered on queue. Catherine looked disappointed.

Just before Sara came out the door, she grinned at him. "What report?" she mouthed.
