Chapter one: An open door
Mary sat on the window seat in her front room. She looked at the same trees she saw every morning. She watched her neighbors walk past the window paying no mind to the small blond girl starring at them, the fact was, they were used to it. Mary Collins was famous for her spot at the window seat. It was her place, the place where she watched a world go by, a world she didn't belong to. Mary was a Witch.
Her mother had been a Muggle, but her father was a wizard. She had just found out a year ago when her mother died. Her favorite person, her guide through life, Her idol, she was gone forever.
Her father had never told Mary's mother about the Wizarding world. He hadn't visited it since he graduated from a school called Hogwarts. Mary was angry with her father. Why hadn't he told her before? At home was the only place she ever seemed to fit in. She didn't have any friends at school. Her only pal, sadly enough, was her Mother. Her father was gone away a lot on business trips. But her mother was gone now. She was never coming back.
It was this morning though that Mary's life would change forever. She would leave her sad home, the only reminder of the life she had, and goes away to better things. To find a place where she belonged and her mother never would have been able to. For right at that moment a barn owl swooped over to her side at the window. It was carrying a letter, from Hogwarts.
"Daaaad!" Mary yelled, " What is this? Daaaad! Where are you? I found something!" Her dad ran in as fast as he could.
"What is it Mary?! You sound like you have been attacked by wild dogs, but I don't see any!" Her father giggled slightly.
" I think I got my Hogwarts letter. I mean, I have never gotten a letter from an owl before, and that is how wizards and witches send mail, is it not?" She smiled a small smile and handed her father the letter that she had barley glanced at.
" My dear, you could be no more correct. You have been excepted to Hogwarts! I am so happy for you Mary, you will love Hogwarts." He handed her the letter again and walked into the kitchen to grab a few sodas for Mary and him to drink. "Here you go!" he handed her an orange cream soda, Mary's favorite.
"Thanks dad. But you know I don't really know anything about the Wizarding world. I really don't believe that I posses any sort of magical abilities!" Mary looked, and sounded, kind of disappointed. As if she had gotten a present and then had it taken away from her as a punishment.
"Oh, how could you believe that? I am your father aren't I, and I am most definitely a Wizard!" she gave her a soft smile, kissed her forehead and walked off to do more work in his office.
Mary was in anything excited. She hadn't ever even so much as visited the world her father had grown up in. He had barley filled her into anything about it. She wanted to learn more about it. It was like she wanted to join the club or something. She wanted to be in this world where she was supposed to belong. Would she be an outcast like at her old school, or would she have more friends than she could count. Being quiet and shy was how she was, but would the other students understand this better than her peers at her old school?
