On the day of the Halloween dance, which was my second Friday at school, there was talk that the Boo-O-Grams were going to be passed out. From early morning to after lunch time everyone waited. But even after lunch there were no Boo-O-Grams that were delivered to any class. Every time a kid would ask a teacher when we would get it, we were told we had to wait.

Having to wait was pure torture.

At the end of the day Zoey and I have Reading Buddies together, it's a really fun class. It's where us big kids go to the kindergarten classes and read to our little buddies. Anyways, Zoey and I were walking side by side in line as Mrs. Burnett led the way from the kindergarten classroom back to our big kid classroom.

"I can't wait for the dance tonight!" Zoey squealed. She was super excited.

"I know, neither can I." I couldn't hide my smile as I said this.

On the outside I was merely happy but on the inside that was a complete understatement. I was bursting with joy like a dark desert sky during a meteor shower.

This was going to be my first school dance and I had been too excited to concentrate all day. Since I had never been to a dance at school before I didn't know what to expect but I knew it was going to be fun.

All the kids had been talking about this day all week long. They had been calling the Halloween dance "the biggest social event of the season." With the way Seabrook took this spooky holiday very seriously, I had no doubt it was true.

"Hey, did you guys hear?" A werewolf girl named Cinnamon, who stood in back of Zoey, said to us, her tone seemed to say, 'hey I know something you don't, but I want to share it with you'.

"What's that?" Zoey said as she and I turned to her.

Cinnamon smiled at us. "Did you hear there's going to be a real-life fortune teller here tonight?"

Zoey and I didn't say a word as all of us stopped walking and waited for our teacher to unlock and open the door to our classroom. But we did turn to each other and shared a smile.

"Yeah, it's true. I heard the teachers talking about it this morning." Cinnamon's twin brother Basil chimed in. He was in front of me and must have thought that we didn't believe his sister because we were quiet. But that wasn't it.

We were quiet for a different reason. A reason that was a secret. See, I already knew that there was going to be a booth set up with a real fortune teller in the cafeteria, along with the spooky photo booth, a creepy slime booth, and a creep-a-licious food and drink table. Zoey knew all about it too. That was because we knew who it was, it was my Aunt Alice. Since I go to school here and Uncle Jasper works here, she volunteered to not only keep an eye on the party with Uncle Jazz, and a bunch of other adults. But to also use her talent of seeing the future as a fun party trick for the kids.

Zoey, Ryland and I all got to help paint a cardboard box for Aunt Alice's booth. So, the information that Cinnamon and Basile were telling us was old news. We had promised to keep it a secret even though these two kids were our friends. Well, our school friends at least since that's where we only saw them. Zoey and I were really best friends since we hung out at each other's houses after school and even had a sleepover at her house the weekend.

"Sorry, guys." Zoey grinned at the twins as the line started to move. It was time to go back inside our class. "We already know about that."

"Uh?" Cinnamon wondered.

"But how?" Basil asked. He looked disappointed.

"I got connections." I said, feeling like a big shot. That confused them even more, but Zoey was giggling now.

"What does that mean?" Cinnamon and Basil asked together, in that weird twin way.

"The fortune teller you speak of is my aunt." I explained.

"What? Your aunt can see the future? For real life?" Cinnamon and Basil asked in unison.

"Yup. And the stock market too. She loves that thing, maybe a little too much." I said, not knowing what the last part actually meant. I only said that because I overheard my mom tell my dad that a few times.

"Nessie, you're lucky you have a future seeing aunt." Basil said. Cinnamon and Zoey agreed.

And then we were inside strolling to our desks. While the girls walked nice and quietly to the right side of the room where there's a straight line of three desks, which is actually one desk pushed up against a cluster of four other desks to make one big group. The boys scrabbled and pushed one another on the left side of the room where the same number of desks were. All of the boys waited to be first in their seats while us girls sat in our seats watching the madness play out. It was ridiculous.

"Now boys," Mrs. Burnett clapped her hands and the room got quiet. "There's no need to push and shove. No need to be first, just sit down nicely like the girls do." She pointed over to the girls' side of the room.

All of us girls wasted no time folding our hands on our desks and looking like perfect little angels. Mrs. Burnett praised us, but the boys scoffed and rolled their eyes. Our teacher then saw the opportunity to go over the class rules about how everyone (not just the girls) should walk into the room and sit nicely in their seats.

It was a long and boring speech. It was nothing new since she repeats this lecture at least twice in one hour. So, all of us know it by heart. Yet, we have to hear it because the boys act like cavemen inside the classroom.

I'm not sure why boys have to act so weird, well, most boys I can't say all, because there's one boy that is not so crazy. His name is Carter, and he is a blond werewolf with blue eyes and is very nice. Twice at lunch this week he sat with Zoey and I and I felt my heart get all thumpity thump because I like, like him. I have a very big crush on him.

The more I thought about him my eyes drifted over to the other side of the room. My eyes landed on him, and he was staring at me! I smiled at him and then quickly looked away. Zoey who sits next to me, didn't miss any of this. I got the feeling that she wanted to say something to me but since we're not allowed to talk in class, she only used her foot to nudge mine under the desk. I pretended that I didn't feel it.

At the same time our teacher's long speech was coming to an end, someone knocked on the door. Since I have the most important job in the classroom that's called door monitor, I got up to answer it. A sixth-grade boy who helps in the office handed me a white grocery bag filled with treats, he told me to give it to my teacher and then he was gone.

With the bag in my hand, I turned around and walked toward my teacher. I didn't have to look around to know that all eyes were on me. I could feel it. There were also whispers that I could hear perfectly about what might be in the bag. I ignored it all.

"Oh, good it looks like the Boo-O-Grams are here." Mrs. Burnett said as she took the bag from me. "Thank you, Nessie. You may go back to your seat now." She said to me.

I went back to my desk just like she told me to do.

The whole class was buzzing with excitement. There were loud whispers and tapping feet. Even I was impatiently drumming my fingers on my smooth black leggings that had pictures of tiny candy corns all over them. It was part of my witch costume, the rest of it was in my backpack. I brought it to school with me since the Halloween dance was right after the bell rang. As much as I couldn't wait for my Boo-O-Gram I also couldn't wait to change into my costume.

"Class, it's time to settle down." Mrs. Burnett put two fingers to her lips.

All eyes were on our teacher as she sat at her desk with the bag, waiting for everyone to get quiet. With the Boo-O-Grams waiting to be passed out, everyone was too excited not to make noise. But everyone tried very hard to calm down or else we wouldn't get our spooky treat and it was almost time for school to end.

On my first day of school, I had no idea what a Boo-O-Gram was. I quickly learned when I got home and in my homework folder I had an order form for those things, pulse one for the school dance. Right when my parents came home from school, I gave my mom the order forms and she signed the second one and gave me money for the dance. But for the first form I gave her she kept reading it.

Mom had looked so confused. She literally looked like she was reading instructions in a language she can't read on how to put together a very complicated rocket.

"Edward," Mom had said, still holding the piece of paper.

"Yes?" Daddy asked from the bathroom where he was changing into his clothes for work.

"I can't make heads or tails about what a Boo-O-Gram is. I've never heard of such a thing." Mom explained.

Daddy walked out of the bathroom. His eyes met mine, silently asking me for information but all I could do was shrug. At that point I had no idea what it was. I just knew it was something you buy. Of course, I could have asked Zoey and found out that way, but I forgot.

"Don't worry, love. I'll figure it out." Dad had said, taking the paper from mom.

"I hope so because I want one." I said bouncing up and down.

Both of my parents thought that was funny about me wanting something without even knowing what it was. I didn't think that was silly since I really wanted one. Finally, Daddy figured out what a Boo-O-Gram was when he looked on the back of the order form where it said what it was.

"It seems to be a spooky treat for the children." Daddy had said, eyes on the paper. At that point Ryland, who was only wearing a pull-up, came running in.

"Treat!" Ryland shouted.

"Yeah. It says that all spooky treats are nut, eyeball, brain, and blood free." Daddy said, handing me back the paper as Mom picked Ryland up.

The spooky treats were for parents to buy for their kids or kids could buy it for their friends. I wanted two, one for myself and one for Zoey. Mom filled out the form and Daddy gave me two dollars for it since they were a dollar each.

"All right, boys and girls." Mrs. Burnett called to everyone; her voice pulled me out of my thoughts. "Time to line up and I will hand out your surprises to you one by one."

She called them surprises because no one knew exactly what kind of candy it was.

Everyone grabbed their backpacks and lined up at the door in a single file line. One by one our teacher handed us our treat as she let us walk out before the bell rang.

The treat was different for everyone. For humans, witches, warlocks, and werewolves it was a tootsie pop. Sour fake gummy boogers for the Frankenstein kids, chewy, slimy fake brain lollipops for zombies, and for vampires it was a tofu blood lollipop. I received two and walked out of my class. My treats smelled good, and I couldn't wait to eat them. But first I wanted to read the note that was attached to the lollipop stick.

"What do you call a buffet for a vegetarian vampire?" I read the message that was from my parents as Zoey, and I walked through the halls.

"I don't know. What?" She asked as we headed for the girl's bathroom to change into our costumes.

"A Zoo." I said the rest of the joke and added, "That's because my family used to drink animals before we moved to Seabrook."

Zoey giggled. "Now read the one I gave you." She insisted.

I looked at the other note I held in my hand. "What can you catch from a vampire in wintertime?"

"Frostbite!" Zoey said the punch line before I could.

"I love it." I grinned as we reached the bathroom. "Now read yours."

"How do zombies keep their hair from getting messy?" She read, a smile playing at the corner of her lips. "They use SCARE Spray."

She laughed and we gave each other a big hug. Both of us put our Boo-O-Gram treats in our backpacks and walked into the bathroom where some other girls were. We waited our turn then quickly went into the stalls to change. I put on my candy corn witch dress and matching hat super-fast but Zoey was a little slower than I am, I had to wait for her. When she came out of the stall dressed like a beautiful rainbow witch, we complimented each other's costumes and walked to the cafeteria.

Zoey and I were all smiles and giggling as we chatted and walked. We were calling ourselves twin witches because both of us were dressed as beautiful witches even though we weren't wearing the same costume.

"Wow!" I said as we walked into the cafeteria where a lot of kids in costumes were.

"I know. Come on." Zoey took my hand pulling me further inside.

The cafeteria looked like Halloween. There's no better description than that with cutouts of Jack-o-lanterns, bats, black cats and ghosts all over the walls. Orange, black and red streamers hanging from the ceiling and there was also a rainbow disco ball up there too. Everything looked creepy and cool.

Kids were dancing to the song Monster Mash as Zoey, and I put our backpacks down in the corner with the others. Before the song ended, we were dancing too. It was fun dancing with my best friend.
