Don't Go Where I Can't Follow
' "Frodo, Mr. Frodo!" he called, "Don't leave me here alone! It's your Sam calling. Don't go where I can't follow!..."'
- TTT; 'The Choices of Master Samwise'
Don't go where I can't follow,
do not rove where I can't pass;
let me always trace your footsteps
on the green and dewy grass.
Do not walk a way that blocks me,
do not travel roads with gates;
for I might get locked behind one
and leave you alone to Fate.
Journey not the path of solitude
across the hills and lawns;
let me be always your shadow
as still comes the brilliant dawn.
When walking into danger
let me follow ever still;
for if ever you were threatened
there's no foe I wouldn't kill.
Do not tread the trail of darkness
down a lonely road of doubt;
instead, let me be your guiding star
when all other lights go out.
To divide our paths would be
the cruelest gift that you could give;
for don't you know I'd throw my life away
to see you live?
"Don't you leave him," they once told me,
"I never mean to," I replied;
so don't go where I can't follow,
and let us never say goodbye.
