Author's Notes: Much more angsty than I have ever written... Written in 30-ish minutes. If I didn't do justice to the challenge, you can beat my butt. Written for contrelamontre's complementary colors challenge... Oh, and between the ~*~'s is a kind of flashback... in case you're wondering. It's slash. No like, no read. Love. Embrace. Enjoy.
We Were Opposites
By Katie of Gryffindor
We were real opposites, him and me. He was a Gryffindor... Brave, honest, chivalrous... I was a Slytherin... Brutal, snide, caniving... Him... Gryffindor's Golden Boy. Me... Slytherin's Silver Prince... Him... Black hair, boyish features, a smile that could brighten even the darkest corner. Me... Pale all over, chiseled face, a sneer that could spread darkness almost everywhere.
But I could never bring the dark to him. He always brought the light to me.
No matter what we did, how hard we fought... He could always bring me into the light of day... Bring me into sunshine and happiness when I had been raised in dark and sorrow.
We fought for so long... On the Quidditch pitch... Him in scarlet, me in emerald. In the war... Him for Dumbledore's Light. Me for the Dark Lord.
I knew that if we could somehow be together, though, everything would be right. Our differences could bring us closer. We could be perfect.
Just before the end, I confronted him. I needed to tell him.

"Potter."
Harry Potter turned his head slowly, wand at the ready.
"Malfoy."
Draco Malfoy stood still, hands up in submission. "I'm not armed, Potter."
Harry turned the rest of his body just as slowly as he had turned his head. "What do you want, Malfoy?" asked Harry warily. He took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
"I would like to confess to something."
Harry's head snapped up, and Draco was nearly knocked over by the intense color of Harry's eyes. The green nearly overpowered Draco and he almost forgot completely what it was he needed to confess.
"What are you confessing, Malfoy? Finally owning up to all the death you've caused?" Harry glared at the blonde, waiting for the forthcoming confession.
Draco dropped his hands and his eyes. He could not watch the other man as he spoke. "No, it's something I've needed to say for a very long time, but never could. Now, with the end so near... I need to tell you."
Harry narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "So spit it out, Ferret."
Draco flinched. The childhood nickname had always hurt. It did, even now. Draco mumbled something. Yes, a Malfoy actually mumbled.
"What was that?" asked Harry, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"I'm in love with you. Always have been." Draco looked back up at Harry, imploringly. He was hoping that somehow, some way, Harry might feel something... Harry just stared.
"Well?" said Draco quietly. "Is there nothing you can say to that? Don't you want to beat me senseless?"
Harry took a deep breath. He shook his head, as if to clear it. Then he looked Draco in the eyes.
"I'm sorry. I will never love you." He turned and walked away.

The next time we saw each other, we were set against each other in the Last Battle. At the same time, we dispensed our final spells. Mine was the same flash of green he had seen twenty-some years before. It killed him this time. His was a flash of red, the newest developement in wizardry. It sent me to where I am now.
Hell.
Now I'm sure he sits with the angels... He probably is one. Surrounded by his family. White clouds. Blue sky. Pure light.
And now I sit in the dark, alone. There is nothing but black, burnt walls. Orange flames licking at my robes. Sheer darkness.
And what is my hell?
"I will never love you."
