Steam
Pairing: rogers/southerlyn
Rogers let herself into her apartment, threw the keys into a tray by
the door, and dropped her purse and gym bag to the floor. Crossing
the living room, she paused to close the drapes over a spectacular
night dispaly of New York skyline. The answering machine was
blinking--two calls. She had a pretty good idea who from. I can't do
this without a drink", she thought.
After pouring herself a stiff scotch, she sank down in the plush
chair next to the phone. With slightly trembling fingers she pushed
the PLAY button.
"Elizabeth. It's me. I know you've been avoiding me, but i don't
know why. I thought things were going well between us". There was a
slight break in the voice, and then a pause. "Two weeks ago you gave
me your keys. You know I've never used them without an invitation.
I'm asking you for one now. I need to see you. Please". Then a
click and a buzz.
Rogers pressed the PAUSE button, and took another drink. She inhaled
deeply, then pressed PLAY.
"It's me again. Listen, if it's about the age thing it shouldn't
be. You know that. Call me".
Rogers erased the messages, sighed, and leaned back in the chair.
Oh, Serena, she thought, it's about the age thing all right, that and
a million other things. Like an estranged husband, and a son, and a
whole slew of other relatives who have no idea I could feel for or
behave in this way with another woman. And it's about you, Serena,
and your ambition.
In truth Rogers missed the girl--missed her much more than she
imagined she would. Missed sleeping with her. Missed seeing that
brilliant, unguarded smile that was just for her. Missed her passion
and her willingness to please. As her lover, Rogers had seen a
totally different side of Serena--one she would never have guessed
existed--one that she kept so expertly concealed in her professional
life. But it was that concealment Rogers mistrusted--for she knew it
well, and had practiced it herself for many years.
Heaving herself from the chair, she stripped off her scrubs and left
them where they fell. She needed a shower-- a long hot shower to
unknot her muscles.
Five minutes later she was standing under a spray of water as hot as
she could stand it. Steam billowed all around her. She closed her
eyes. Then she heard the soft slide of the shower door. Someone
whispering "Elizabeth" into her ear.
Soft arms enfolded her in the steam.
