"The mystery illness"

Disclaimer; I own bugger all, please don't sue me. If you do, I will be forced to come round to your house and beg you not to.If that fails, I will threaten your children. Enjoy!
The bodies of Elves work in different ways to those of men. Their life cycles are more drawn out, and it takes many hundreds of years before they start to age. As with all good things, though, this comes with a heavy price. Every ten years , an elvish woman is struck down by a mysterious sickness that rages through her body for a week or so, and then disappears without a trace.
The disease does strange things to their minds. One minute, they can be happy, smiling and laughing with their friends, and the next they can be crying or screaming with rage. They become entirely unpredictable, and even dangerous to be around. Great pains take control of their bellies, burning like fire, and blood leaks from their bodies. There is no known cure for this disease that turns wives against husbands, mothers against children and friends against one another.
However, as the elves point out to the unfortunate sufferers, it could be worse. Human women have to go through it every month..
