"Anything for you, love." He smiled and waited for her to say what was it exactly that he could help her with.
"I need a place to stay low for a while. I'm in a little bit of trouble." Caroline declared.
Only then he saw a suitcase beside her and he remembered that they were still outside, in the streets.
He just looked at her for a few seconds with an unreadable look, that made Caroline feel a bit uneasy, before he spoke again.
"Could you wait here for a minute? I'll be right back."
And before she could answer he was gone, using that nifty vampire speed and leaving Caroline totally confused.
Realisation dawned on her when Klaus returned with a petite woman who invited her in.
That must be Freya, his only mortal sibling who probably owned that compound. But why is Klaus afraid of vampires barging in?
With getting the invite, she didn't want to ask any questions at the moment and she started to go for her suitcase but before she could even touch the handle, it was already in Klaus' hands.
Of course, ever the gentleman.
"So you are an old "friend" of his?" Freya suddenly asked Caroline with emphasise strangely on the word "friend" when they walked inside together. And she wasn't the only one who noticed that because Klaus nearly shouted her name with anger evident in his voice.
"Sorry," the woman simply said and walked away.
"What was that about?" Caroline asked Klaus when they were alone again.
"Nothing. Don't worry about it." Klaus simply stated before leading her upstairs to a nice room that was suppose to be hers.
"Here," he put the suitcase down on the floor, "Stay as long as you need"
"Thank you but aren't you gonna ask the specifics of why I'm here."
"Oh, don't worry, I have a lot of questions but first you should freshen up, maybe take a bath and just rest. I'm sure you're tired after your trip."
"Little bit, thank you. Talk later?"
"Definitely," he smiled and left.
After taking a bath and changing clothes, she decided to look around in the compound cause it seemed huge.
"Caroline is not the problem. If you want to see someone as an enemy, than look no further than our dear friend Marcel." She suddenly heard Klaus yell.
What the hell?
Before he could follow the voice, he was already by her side.
"What's wrong?" Klaus asked, no anger evident in his voice. How he could always change his mood around her, was still a mystery to Caroline. He was never (or almost never) angry with her. Just always so sweet.
"Nothing. I just wanted to look around."
"And I want to show you everything but first let's chat a little in my study, shall we"
Caroline simply nodded and he led her to his study.
"This is where me and my siblings usually make plans"
"Plans like how to kill people?"
"Exactly!"
He beamed at her, but she was totally serious.
"Klaus-"
"Yes?"
"What the hell is going on here? Why are you so on edge ? You and your sister for example?"
Klaus just sighed and asked her to sit down on the couch, then he sat next to her, keeping perfect distance, being not to close and not too far.
Facing her and resting his arm on the backrest.
"Caroline, please, let's start with you. What do you mean by laying low for a while? Are you running from somebody?"
"Yes, but I can't say who. You would just freak and just kill him and I can't allow that. Just know that it isn't safe for me in Mystic Falls and I came here because I didn't know where else to go."
"Could you be any more vague, Caroline." Frustration was clearly evident in his voice.
"Klaus, please."
"Please what? Please not care about your wellbeing?" anger now evident in his voice.
"Okay, I ran away from Mystic Falls. Stefan told me to go and not tell him where I was going cause it isn't safe even for him to know. That reminds me, I can't just stay here, I need to be cloaked while being here. Do you know any witch that could help me with that?"
Klaus wanted to pry more but than he remembered that he, too, had a big secret that he kept from her. He hated those lies between them but decided not to ask any more questions about what or who she was running from.
"Freya. Besides being a lovely sister, she's also a gifted witch. It runs in the family, remember?"
"I remember, your mother."
"Exactly. Consider it done. The cloaking spell that is."
"Thank you, Klaus" and to his surprise she leaned in and planted a soft kiss on his cheek.
Klaus couldn't help but smile but then he remembered something and asked her in all seriousness, " So are you and Stefan Salvatore in a relationship now?"
At first Caroline didn't answer. She just didn't want to hurt him.
"Caroline? It's ok, you can talk to me about these things."
Wait, what? Since when is Klaus relaxed and calm when talking about her boyfriends. Are his feelings for her changed in any way. Are they really just friends now.
Something about that notion irritated her.
"Okay, then yes, we are."
"I seeā¦" and there It was, beneath that calm exterior she could see that it hurt him.
"But I don't want to talk about it. Let's change a subject? You promised to explain what's with all the tensions around here?"
" I promised? I don't remember that." He answered playfully.
"Okay, maybe you didn't exactly promise but I'm really curious, landing here on a casual Thursday and you have a bomb here ready to explode at any second. Or is it like that all the time?"
"OK, ok, I'll tell you. There's two huge problems. One problem I can't share. Not right now, at least. But the second is that an old acquaintance of mine is in town and he had acquired a real seer who shared a prophecy with me. Prophecy about me, Elijah and Rebekah."
"What was the prophecy?" she asked, worry clearly evident in her voice.
Klaus wanted to smile at her being worried about his wellbeing but kept the feeling to himself.
"That one of us would fall at the hands of a family member, one by friend and one by foe." He let out a sigh he didn't know he was even holding back as he really didn't want her to be worried about him. Especially when she clearly had her own problems to deal with.
"Oh my god." Now everything she had heard in this house made more sense. Freya and Elijah were afraid that Klaus would fall at the hands of her. That was really mind bogging.
"Don't worry about it, love. I have everything under control" he smiled at her reassuringly.
"No you don't. Omg, I shouldn't have come here. You have your own problems to deal with."
And with that, she stood up but before she could bolt, she felt her hand being gripped by Klaus.
"Please, sit back down, Caroline."
And when she had done that he simply stated "No matter how busy or occupied I am, I have always time for you. Really, don't worry about it."
"Okay," she simply answered and they just looked at each other for a minute or two before she realised that her friend was totally exhausted.
"Klaus, you should rest for a while. You look so tired."
"I am but I don't have time. I have to scheme diabolical plans with my siblings. I have thousand years worth of enemies to deal with after all."
And they both laughed at that.
It felt so good to be with him like that, Caroline thought to herself.
"Penny for your thoughts`?" Klaus asked.
"I was just thinking that I really missed this."
"Missed what?"
"Us, being like that, relaxed."
He didn't answer, he just smiled, knowing very well what she meant by that. He had missed her, too, after all. Especially after that day they had together in the woods.
"Penny for your thoughts?"
"Oh, I was just thinking about the day we had in the woods."
"Klaus, we had a deal!"
"Yes, to not speak of it ever again."
"One time deal"
"Are you sure? Now that you are here, all I can think about is that day when I got you to loosen up."
"Loosen up? I didn't know that I was so uptight."
"Not uptight. Just that you don't know yourself as much as you think you do. And you are completely denying yourself to feel the darkness that comes with being a vampire."
"One intercourse and you know that about me?"
"I don't like the word "intercourse", we made love, twice."
Caroline squirmed but couldn't deny the truth which made Klaus smile.
"And I knew that about you long time before that day. You should embrace the darkness, but you keep running away from it. I blame your so-called friends who have denied you the good parts of being a vampire."
Caroline didn't know what to say to that so she just stared down at her nails.
"Okay, that's it for today. I'll let you get some rest now." Klaus declared after a few minutes of silence.
"Yes, but why don't we both get some sleep. Promise me that."
"Okay, deal, I'll get a couple of hours of sleep and you'll sleep through the night."
Then he accompanied her back to her room.
"Sweet dreams."
"You too."
