Song: New Slang by The Shins
(2 years after the events of Garden State)
Sam slept very calmly, and her lips were curved to a small smile. Her new husband, Andrew Largeman, couldn't sleep. It was 2 am in the morning and this wasn't the first time he's had a restless night. Until he met Sam 2 years ago in that hospital, Andrew had quite a lot of sleepless nights.
The couple had been married for a year now, and that was before Andrew's father had passed away from a heart attack. But Andrew knew how happy his father would've been to hear that Sam was 8 months pregnant and expecting a baby girl.
The couple still lived with Sam's mom, Olivia, who's been helping the couple prepare the baby's nursery.
Andrew was excited about having a daughter, but sometimes he worried how scary the birth would be. Sam always assured him that it would be fine, that every parent goes through it.
Andrew got up quietly out of bed, making sure not to wake up Sam.
He felt his feet stop in the open doorway of the baby's room. All finished and the walls are painted a light pink. The crib was just in the corner of the room. Andrew smiled as he looked around the room of his soon to be daughter.
Andrew heads back to bed and puts one arm around Sam's waist. Sam woke up and asked "Everything okay?"
Andrew answered "Yeah. I was checking the nursery."
Sam just smiled and took her husband's hand, squeezing it softly. "You'll be a great father, Andrew, our daughter is gonna love you."
Sam had been singing lullabies to their unborn daughter every night. One song of which Sam had recommended to Andrew when they first met 2 years ago. The couple were die hard The Shins fans since then.
Andrew could hear the lyrics in Sam's voice.
Gold teeth and a curse for this town
Were all in my mouth
Only I don't know how they got out, dear
Turn me back into the pet
I was when we met
I was happier then with no minds
And if you took to me like a
Gull takes to the wind
Well, I'd've jumped from my trees
And I'd've danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would be fare well
Sam could sing so well, she had started a band over a year ago.
Andrew didn't know how a baby could affect the band, but he tried not to worry about it, as he knew Sam's mother was there to help them.
Sometimes being sleepless gives you time to think over stuff.
A month later, their daughter Melody Lyn Largeman was born. She was named Melody due to her mother's love of music.
The birth was stressful, but it was worth it at the end. Sam had both Andrew and her mother with her the whole labor and delivery.
She had tears in her eyes once she held her newborn daughter in her arms. Not from sadness nor from fear. From happiness.
Melody could recognize Sam's voice, due to the countless number of times her mother sang to her every night.
