Summary: Esther turned Klaus back into a human, and, for teen years, Caroline believed that the one that promised her forever was dead. She certainly did not expect to come face to face with the one that she thought was gone forever in a restaurant in Chicago, but with serious brain damage and amnesia. They could start again, that was only the end of the beginning, or the story ended forever? AU season 3 TVDU

A: I don't own TVDU or any characters. Sorry for my bad english.

The Mikaelson Ball was wild, cursed, but what followed was even more. After the spell to bind the originals to each other didn't work, Esther came up with another plan, a plan to kill the very center, the original hybrid, the bastard son, Klaus, with the help of Caroline's friends and a few witches.

And there was Klaus now: surrounded by Esther, Finn and her minions. The spell glowed in the sky, scattered with white oak. Something red, but still not blood, began to flow from his mouth, eyes and ears. It was...horrible, it was eating him from the root, he had become grayer and grayer, the purple veins becoming much clearer. Rebekah was passed out on the floor, and Caroline would give anything to help Klaus, but she couldn't, she was too dehydrated, too weak, and the force field Esther created was too strong. She would give anything to save him, despite her friends, despite Elena, despite the fact that he was their "enemy", she wanted to save him because he was her soulmate, the love of her life, her last love. Then Klaus' eyes died.

These events had happened ten years ago, and now Caroline Forbes traveled the world alone, living for herself and only herself, embracing her immortality and what Klaus had promised her. Klaus...Klaus, who had been killed by his mother in front of her eyes; Klaus, who promised her the world; Klaus, who told her that he would be her last love...was gone. His siblings had been devastated, fleeing and threatening anyone who dared to follow them. No one knew where Elijah and Rebekah were now, not even Caroline. Finn leaved with Esther, still trying to find the rest of the family, and there was rumors that Kol was helping Rebekah and Elijah, but no one saw the youngest Mikaelson in years.

Caroline blinked when she received a text from Enzo. He and Bonnie were in Chicago and wanted to see her. Well, maybe another quick trip wasn't too bad. The blond vampire took a deep breath of fresh air, looking at the sight before her: Tokyo was glorious this time of year. "Rome, Paris, Tokyo.", how someone told her in another life.

Elijah Mikaelson walked the streets of Chicago...he, Rebekah and Freya, their newly discovered sister, creating a protective screen around the man between them...a very human blonde young man.

"We will need to run. Fast, maybe faster than we did before, we have enemies for a thousand years on our trail." Elijah remembered saying 10 years ago when his younger brother had woken up from their mother's failed attempt to kill him, fully human.

Esther had found the cure, put it in her spell, and found a way to make it work on an original hybrid. After all, humanity was a punishment worse than death. It was hard, and annoying, but Niklaus, as angry as he was about it, managed to live safely as a human...or so they thought, until a month ago. Until a month ago when he had a near fatal car accident. His head hit the asphalt, causing brain damage, TBI. He hadn't been really himself since. The siblings entered a restaurant at Freya's request for food, but stopped when they saw a familiar blonde figure at a table next to a man.

"Caroline?" Rebekah said in surprise as confusion appeared on Klaus' face.

"W-who...i-is...?" Klaus asked, hiding behind Elijah, anxiety overwhelming him.

Caroline's face was frozen. She was shaking het head wildly, whispering phrases like "It's impossible!", "You're not real!", "I'm dreaming!", "What's happening?!". The brunette man next to her looked at her with very worried eyes. Who were they? Klaus hid more behind his brother.

"Amnesia", as the 300 doctors they compelled to come told them. The brain damage caused partial amnesia, and Klaus had 1000 years of memories, making it nearly impossible for him to get them all back after the accident. The last few centuries were a blur, memories in the shadows, but Klaus' first years were easier to retrieve, the years when they were human.

"I watched you die." Caroline said with tears in her eyes and a completely confused face as she stood up from the table.

"Bekah? Who is she?" Klaus asked.

"Niklaus, let's go get something to eat." Freya said, taking Klaus by the hand.

"W-what?" Klaus asked, confused.

"Let's get something to eat." Freya repeated, noticing that her brother was having some trouble concentrating on what she was saying.

Klaus just let Freya guide him, stumbling a bit along the way.

"Gorgeous, are you alright?" Enzo asked, looking into Caroline's watery eyes.

"Is this some joke? I watched him die." Caroline said as soon as Klaus and Freya disappeared around the corner.

"No...you watched his hybrid side die. Our mother's spell didn't kill him, but turned him into a human." Elijah said, then paused and looked Enzo in the eyes, narrowing, "You will forget Niklaus existed the moment you leave this restaurant, you've never met us, you won't tell anyone about him or us, you won't do anything against us."

"Elijah, what are you doing?!" Caroline asked, alarmed.

Elijah just took a deep breath and continued:

"My deeply apologies, but this is a private matter... A few months ago, my brother was in a car accident, vampire blood and spells were the only thing that saved him. He hit his head on the asphalt, causing internal bleeding, brain damage, as well as amnesia. He doesn't remember the last few centuries miss Forbes."

As soon as her brother finished, Rebekah rushed towards Caroline, only being held by Elijah in her rage.

"This is the first time we've managed to get Nik out of the mansion in two months. If you say anything to him to ruin this, if you hurt him in any way, if you break his heart...Caroline, I will kill you myself ." Rebekah said, baring her fangs.

She wasn't kidding, she loved her brother more than anything in the world. Now, he needed her more than ever.

"He doesn't remember anything?" Caroline asked, still stiffened by Rebekah's remark.

Klaus promised her forever, that he will show her the world, that he will be her first love...she wasn't ready to be with him, but she wasn't ready to let him go either. Somehow, knowing that he couldn't remember her was worse than knowing he was dead.

"No... In the first years...he saw himself as broken, weak...he told us he didn't want you to see him this way."

"He talked about me?"

"A lot." Elijah smiled. "He was waiting for you, before it all...in a century, or teen...he was waiting for you. You were his true love. I haven't seen him that in love since Vivienne...he truly cared about you. But he's not himself right now, Miss Forbes, he's still recovering from the accident. He struggled to learn how to talk again, relearn to read, walking was a challenge... His temper is pretty much the same as when he was a vampire, he acts impulsively, but his judgment has changed. He's doing his best, miss Forbes, and we couldn't be more proud of him."

"I'm glad." Caroline smiled through her tears.

Seeing Klaus alive had been a surprise, but knowing the hell of sadness, pain and disorientation he had been through had been an even bigger one. He didn't even try to contact her before the accident, and now he couldn't remember her at all.

"Enzo...I need to clarify some things out, could you wait for me at the hotel? Tell Bonnie I'll be there until tonight." Caroline said, looking her practically brother-in-law in the eyes.

"Sure, gorgerous. See ya. Take care." He said, then left without another look at Rebekah or at Elijah.

"I want to talk to him." Caroline said, looking over to a table further away where Freya and Klaus were arguing over a packet of sauce.

"If you think I'll~" Rebekah started, but then stopped and looked at her brother. "Less than nine minutes. And we'll be there the whole time, my threat stands."

"Sounds right." Caroline said, suddenly not taking Rebekah's first words so seriously anymore, she just wanted to take care of her brother.

So Caroline walked over to the table, with Elijah and Rebekah behind her like some knights, and sat down at the table, finally catching Klaus' attention.

"Hey, my name is Caroline."

Something in Klaus' eyes flashed as the younger blonde vampire said this. Maybe that was only the end of the beginning?
