Chapter 1: Lost Soul.
I and thou... thou art am... that is the quote I've heard... But I have forgotten who had said it...
Waking up in a alleyway in the very early hour, I felt a jolt of pain from my head. As I felt my face, I had smeared blood on my face, Looking down at my hands, with them being covered in red. I looked to my left and I saw a dead body of a businessman, with his face close to being unrecognizable.
"D-did I kill him?" I asked myself, remembering nothing from what happened, I looked at a window as I saw a deep gash in my face, not deep enough to the bone, but deep enough to hurt. "Who the hell am I..."
I got up and walked out of the alleyway, still in shock from the state I am in. I saw a police car going forward to where I am. The car stopped and two police officers got out of the car. I looked at them.
"I... I think I killed someone..." I said to them.
The officers came close to me, in shock, the brought me into the back seat of the patrol car.
20 minutes later, I was sitting at the police station, one of the officers who brought me into the station entered the room I was in and sat down across from me. He placed a picture of the dead man I saw.
"You know this person?" the officer said.
"... No. I don't think I do." I said to the officer as I gave him the picture. The officer gave me nother picture, this time being a picture of 2 adults, both parents, with a young kid, who looked like me.
"You remember these two?" the officer asked again. I looked back at the officer.
"No..." i said. The officer took the picture away from me.
"I figured you'd say something like that. You don't remember, do you?" the officer said, quite concerned.
"No, I don't think so." I said.
"They're your parents... or at least.. were." The officer said to me. "You see, we had reports of 3 missing people. You ended up being one of them that's still alive... your parents.. We found them dead, their faces being unrecognizable. We're still trying to find out who killed them."
I kept on looking at the officer.
"Who the fuck am I..." I asked the officer. He then gave me a folder. I opened the folder, with some information of who I am... Ren Amamiya.
"You were known as a vigilante by everyone here. Most of your actions can be considered questionable even for vigilante standards." The officer said. "We had to do some research in why you couldn't remember anything. Looks like you had been knocked out by some unknown person. We found most of the stuff the person had used. It seems like they tried to pin the blame on you for something you didn't do."
"... I have amnesia?" I asked.
"... Yes" the officer said.
I had left the police station a few minutes later. I had been given an address to the only other person knew my parents. A friend of them actually.
Hours later, I had been on a train, having enrolled to a high school in Tokyo. I was told by the officer that I was in my second year of school in the area where I lived before the incident. The train arrived at the station in Tokyo. I walked off the train, and I looked at the address I'm heading to, a cafe in the Yongen-Jaya district called Café Leblanc. I walked my way to the district, looking around a bit. As soon as I got to the district, I headed to where the cafe is. I saw the cafe, looking at the address I was given then looking at the building itself before heading inside.
I looked around the cafe a bit before someone came downstairs. Sojiro Sakura.
"Ah, you must be their kid." Sojiro said to me. I sat down on a stool.
"Yes. I'm him." I said to Sojiro.
"Look, Ren. I'm sorry about what happened to your parents. They were very proud of you. Jesus, you look like trash." Sojiro said to me as he had saw the deep gash in my face. He grabbed a medkit and get a patch from it, he then patched the deep gash up.
"Thanks." I kindly said. "You know, this place ain't bad."
"Thanks for the compliment." Sojiro said. I got up from the stool. "I know you're a bit upset about your parents death, but you have to go past that. You got alot of things left in you."
"What do you think I have left?" I asked.
"... Well you still got your health." Sojiro said, smiling a bit. "Here, let me show you to where you'll sleep."
Sojiro leads me to the attic. It was a bit messy, with the bed just milk crates with a thick blanket on top of it.
"It's a bit of a mess, but I think you'll get it cleared up a bit." Sojiro said to me.
"Thanks." I said to Sojiro.
Sojiro went back downstairs as he was about to open the cafe for the day. I began to clean the area up a bit. It was a sunday, so I didn't have any school yet, having being enrolled to Shujin Academy. After an hour of cleaning up, I had a place I can call home. I put down my bag and pulled out a laptop from the bag. I had the email contact from the police chief to inform me about everything about the incident. I opened the laptop and read the email sent to me by him.
"Ren, I know you were worried about if you killed the man we found in the alleyway, but we know you're innocent. You've done great with telling Officer William about what he asked you, and knowing your condition, you've been in a rough shape from the assailent who attacked you. We will be in contact if we got more information about what happened."
I closed the laptop and looked outside the window. I then went downstairs as Sojiro brought a box inside.
"Hey, Ren. I think this belongs to you." Sojiro said as he gave me the box.
"Thanks." I said, I then went back upstairs in my room and placed the box on the table. Opening the box, I saw the contents in it. The box contained a new outfit from the academy, a pair of glasses with fake lens, a smartphone, and a schoolbag. but the last one was different. it was a mask, but it looked different. black makeup like eye shadowing on a while mack. I looked at it a bit before putting it on the desk next to the laptop. I then saw a letter in the box and grabbed it.
"You're a lost soul out for vengeance, a vigilante hell bent on revenge on your parents death, a being out for blood, you are the trickster, you are the shadow, you are Joker."
I dropped the letter, unsure about what I had read. It was 9 PM, and I was out in the town, walking through the busying streets of the technology district. I then saw a glowing kight, it was in a shape of a door, I slowly went close to it, looking right at the thing. I reached my hand out at it, but it went inside it, I then walked into the door shaped light.
Appearing in some area, I looked around a bit, with light hovering over me. The darkness then slowly went away, as I was in a different place. I then saw a bizarre looking man, with bloodshot eyes and a long nose.
"Hello. Welcome to the Velvet Room. My name is Igor." He said to me, in a calm but chilling voice.
"What is this place?" I asked the man.
"It is a world between worlds, a place between dream and reality, mind and matter. You're here because of how special you are." Igor said.
"What do you mean? What makes me special?" I asked. There were two wardens walking at my side, both looking young, shorter than my height.
"Come close to the desk." Igor said. I came close to the desk, looking at him a bit, he gave me a information sheet, almost similar to what I saw at the police station, but it looked different. "You had a exciting past before the tragic event. You're a lost soul out on a revenge mission on the people who had made you who you are."
"What's in it for me?" I asked Igor.
"Caroline? Justine? Show our guest the stamper." Igor said to his two assistance next to me. The two wardens takes out a stamper and placed it onto the desk. "You were changed by the man who commited many sins. You want to take revenge on him and the people who had done devious things, all you have to do is place your hand under the stamper. So, what do you say?"
I looked at him for a while more before putting my left hand under the stamper. The stamper activated and stabbed a small, thin, and sharp piece of metal through my hand, as the stamper went back up quickly, I moved my hand away from it, screaming in pain, my hand started bleeding, but the blood turned black and disappeared as it hit the ground. I looked st the back of my hand as it slowly had a tattoo like mark on it, with the hole in my hand healing itself up.
"W-what the fuck?!" I said to myself.
"You are now the shadow. You are the trickster. A man looking for vengeance. The one who will save many souls of humanity." Igor said as he made a door appear infront of me. "You are now free to go. Do come back to the velvet room at any time to get your powers upgraded."
I looked at the door, I then walked through it, appearing where I was before, back in the real world. I looked at the back of my hand again, as the mark was still there.
"You must have been the newest person to enter the Velvet Room." A person said to me from behind. I looked back at him. He had silver hair and a different outfit. "I'm Yu Narukami."
"... Ren Amamiya." I said to Narukami.
"Amamiya, huh? Interesting. How did you have yourself end up in a place like this?" Narukami asked.
"That's a question I wouldn't need... I needed a new life... but it seems like I can't escape my past." I said as I was walking off
"Well, there had to be mistakes that need to be forgotten." Narukami said.
I stopped and slowly looked behind me to see Narukami.
"Waking up to this night was a fucking mistake..." I said to him as I resumed walking.
Heading back to the cafe, it was pretty much empty, I went upstairs and laid down on my bed. Sojiro came upstairs and sat next to me.
"Hey, Ren. I see that you had some stuff with you before you showed up. What is with it? I did expect you showing up, but I wasn't told about why you showed up. Was it a probation thing?" Sojiro asked.
"They told me that I should be safer with you... The police wanted me to participate in a police case relating to the murder of my parents. I had been in contact with them durring my first day I've been here." I said to Sojiro.
"I see." Sojiro said. I looked at the back of my hand a bit.
"Hey, Sojiro. Do you know this symbol?" I asked, showing the mark on my hand.
"Hmm... I don't think I'm familier with that. I might have to look that up a bit." Sojiro said as he leaves the room. I laid on my bed as I see something on the ground. A black hoodie with a design similar to a black tailcoat. I put the hoodie on a chair as I went back to my bed, slowly falling asleep.
The next morning, I went downstairs, wearing my school outfit. Sojiro sees me and stops me before I head off.
"Hey, can we talk?" Sojiro asked me. I sat down on the stool. "So, I found some info about that mark you have on your hand, and it looks like it might be of ancient mythology."
"How ancient?" I asked
"Around the mid to late 19th century. Seems like assassins in those times would have this mark to specialize in having some mystic powers from a unknown source." Sojiro said as he makes me a coffee. Sojiro gives me the coffee and I drank it. I grabbed my bag and I headed off to Shujin Academy.
