The spell
Lebanon, Kansas, 2015
The bunker was silent. Dean was finally sleeping after drinking at a pub, the Mark of Cain forever burning on his arm. He wasn't aware that his little brother was about to do something that would have changed everything.
Sam was as usual in the library, giving up his sleep in order to try and find a way to cure his big brother of the Mark. His research was not going as planned, every book he read kept disappointing him, because there was no known solution for that awful curse. Sam was getting desperate, because Dean was changing, he was becoming something he was not, and he was losing time.
Sam stopped his train of thought, and his eyes fell on the image of an hourglass on the page of the book he was reading. His heart started pounding as a stray crazy thought passed trough his mind. What if he could save his brother, what if he could make sure that Dean didn't receive the Mark at all, and what if he could change everything he had ever gotten wrong in his life? There was a spell in the book, and ingredients that had to be carefully mixed in a bowl to make it work. Sam was excited, he was going to go along with it. He was going to fix everything.
"Don't worry Dean, I'm going to save you" Sam whispered. "I'm sorry". He left Dean's room after lingering a moment to sadly watch his brother. He would never see this version of his brother anymore.
Everything was ready on the table, Sam hesitated...what if his plan didn't work and he ended up making it worse for everyone? No, it had to work, he would make sure it did or he would die trying. Sam took a deep breath, mixed the ingredients, closed his eyes, and pronounced the spell that would take him back in time.
Sam woke up in a motel room he vaguely recognised from a very long time ago. Where was he? More importantly, when was he? He had not had a specific date in mind, he just wanted it to be enough to change things. Well, he would find out in time. He got up from the bed, at his right Dean's usual bed was empty but ruffled, his brother was probably out getting breakfast. Sam looked in the mirror and gasped...his face was young, very young. He hadn't had hair so short since the year he had died in Cold Oak. Wait, if he has not been in Cold Oak yet, then Dean hasn't yet sold his soul to bring him back. He promised himself, this time Dean will never go to hell. His thoughts were interrupted by the door opening and letting his brother in.
"Hey Sam, I got breakfast for you, and I found a new case, so let's eat and then we hit the road" Dean handed him pancakes and settled down to eat.
Sam tried to behave as not to draw suspicion. "Ok, tell me everything about this case. What is it about?" Sam asked him, keeping a straight expression and trying not to cry at Dean's young unmarked face.
"Well, I found it on the newspaper. It happened in Greenwood, Mississipi. A guy was found dead, and get this, he had been torn apart, he had slashes on all his body. Of course it could have been a bear or a wolf, but the strange thing is that the body was found in a room, locked from the inside" Dean started. "Sounds like something for us, uh?"
Oh yes it was indeed something for them. Sam would always remember this hunt, because it was the first time they met a hellhound, and Dean almost made a demon deal for their Dad. Dad was already in Hell then, and Dean was not himself in his grief. Why had the spell brought him here? He had to change something that was about to happen?
Wait, this was the perfect opportunity he had to find a hellhound. What if he killed the hellhound? What if he closed the Gates of Hell? He started making a plan in his head, thinking it would be different this time, he would finish the Trials this time, Dean couldn't stop him because he wouldn't know. Sam would die, yeah, but the world would be finally safe, Dean would be safe.
