The night was dead.
The park bench was a spot he frequently hung out on.
Denji grimaced when he noticed his phone screen light up, and along came a vibration. Denji read the caller on the screen, and at the mere sight, a low groan rumbled in his throat. Blonde eyebrows furrowed.
"Aki?" he winced, "I dunno what he wants."
Swallowing a lump in his throat, Denji felt nervous about answering this call. He closed his eyes and thought about it, and at the moment, he just let the phone ring without bothering to answer it. He averted his gaze from the phone screen, looking at his surroundings to make sure no weirdos were around.
"What if he calls me a dumbass again?" Denji grumbled, leaning back into the bench.
He perked up when the call ended, turning into a missed call.
"He'll probably bite my head off now that I didn't answer."
But the phone screen lit up again with yet another call, and it was Aki again. Denji just slouched into the bench. He thought about answering the phone, but the urge just wouldn't come to him. He didn't feel like talking to Aki right now.
As he sat on the bench, a sense of loss and loneliness overtook him. It was a common feeling for him. Sometimes, he felt alone in his thoughts, no matter how many people he hung out with in the day. Right now, all that felt nice to him was the cool air brushing through his short blonde locks of hair.
The call ended again, turning into a second missed call. Denji just grumbled.
"Fuck sake," he groaned.
He just hoped that Aki wouldn't suddenly show up and see Denji's phone in his hand.
The phone lit up again, only to reveal a curious Aki with two missed calls on the screen. A third call started up, and on the first ring, Denji actually answered.
"Sorry, I was doing stuff," he lied.
"Mhm. I was just checking up on you to see if you're okay," stated Aki.
"Huh? That's it?"
"Well, yeah. I can see you sitting on a bench. You've been sat there for at least an hour now. Thanks for missing my calls."
"I was sleeping!" Denji argued.
"Yeah, and I wasn't watching you this whole time," Aki played with an eyeroll.
Denji looked around to the block of flats near the park, spotting Aki hanging out the window with a cigarette in his mouth. Clouds of smoke could be seen.
"You weirdo. Haven't ya got better shit to do?"
Aki just sighed, "I suggest you come inside before the drunks and muggers get you. It's getting too late to be sitting outside."
"Fine," he droned in response.
"If I admit, I did also phone you just to hear your voice, too. I wanted to know that you weren't in any trouble."
Denji shrugged his shoulders, "Kay."
Denji just hung up the phone after that. He stood up from the bench and glanced at Aki again. Aki was still smoking out the window. Denji heaved a sigh of relief, just thankful that Aki didn't have a stick up his ass this time.
