A/N: This will be a 3 chap story, but I'm giving you this first one for Halloween 2022, the rest will follow eventually xx Alexis

Call Me What You Will, Your Soul Is Still Mine!

A job's a job and this one isn't so bad. I'm immortal, still young I think, but of some indeterminate age. I could be nineteen; I could be thirty-nine or even one hundred and nine, who knows! I have friends, I've had lovers and I have a nice home. Plus it can go anywhere I do, I just say the words and it appears wherever I am. The outside just blends in with the surrounding houses, but the inside never changes. Sometimes my job takes longer than expected, so I have to stay around and it has the power to make folks think it's always been there. Why, well death can have a cascading effect! Like for instance, a suicide can beget a heart attack in another! Or the death of a child can overwhelm the mother or father! A first-time murderer likes the feel of the kill and has a spree!

There are so many reasons, like this time, here in good old Forks Washington. I was just supposed to be a heart attack at the wheel, no other fatalities on the quiet road. But, it turned out to be not quite so simple! Heck, this isn't even my jurisdiction, I'm only helping out. I'm, well I've got many names, but you can call me Sabé, it's Isabella really but nah, just nah! I'm one of many spectral hounds. Usually depicted as a fierce-slathering wolf, which is just one side of me. I'm a wolf aright, a green wolf! Yes, that's right green, the fur, the eyes and the flames too. I'm one of many incarnations of death, whose job it is to escort souls to their final destination. If you see me as the fierce slathering one, you're going to hell! But once in a while, we have to cover other areas when tragedies strike and the normal retriever can't.

That was a wolf joke, did you get it? Retriever, as in a cute puppy dog! Anyway, say a tsunami or an earthquake happened; well all the normal singular deaths get handed out to anyone not busy at that time. So here I am and it's a mess of not quite epic proportions, but bad. I was in place standing in between a group of trees, totally camouflaged, you know, being green and all. When it happened the bus came down the road slowly, no hurry no rush and all of a sudden a red-headed woman, well vampire woman rushed in front of it. She was being chased by a pack of giant wolves, nowhere near as big as me, not even the lead one; he was almost maybe a head taller than the others. Big and pure black, as black as a hellhound, but the eyes were not red, they were a hard flat brown.

That's when the driver had his heart attack and that should have been that. But as the bus glanced off a tree and stopped, a couple of the passengers hit their heads and blood was spilt! The vampire turned around and was on them before the wolves could do anything, too slow way too slow! So I now had the souls of the male driver and one woman who died of a stroke. One man out of pure fear, plus two women drained dry and the vampire as well! Six souls instead of one, the driver was supposed to have a deer run out in front of him causing the heart attack, not a damned vampire and a pack of bloody wolves! The problem I could hear them discussing, yes I was surprised I could hear their telepathic conversation. They didn't know how to cover up the two women drained by the vampire!

All shouting back and forward except him, the black one he was looking around. He was scanning the area and then he stood at his full height and ordered them to be quiet. He sniffed the air and turned to look directly where I was, he should not have been able to detect me! Only the very good or the very bad can sense me, usually meaning their death was near at hand, like in the next few days. I feel my dark side trying to come forward and know just where he's headed.

"You might as well come out, I know you're there!" he said,

But they were all surprised, so it was only him who sensed me. I padded forward in my smallest form and the silver wolf started to laugh,

"It's green! Damn a green wolf, I've never seen anything funnier!" he spluttered,

A couple of them sniggered, but he the black one only sighed. Well, I was a little miffed so I turned on my flames, my eyes glowing brightly and my height increasing to its fullest. Double the size of them, even him the black souled one!

"Your soul is not as clean as it should be little man, be very careful!" I growled in his head and he cowered back,

"Do you have a human form?" the leader asked,

No, he growled it in my head and I disliked the way it sounded and felt. A very sleazy, almost dirty feeling. Jeez, I'm literally death and he gives me the creeps!

"Male or female? You chose!" I replied softly,

"Female please," he said with another little growl in his tone,

Yup not only seedy but an arrogant prick with it. I picked out his woman's image from the other's heads and he gasped,

Well, I was or should I say she was naked and they were all ogling. No, one looked away sadly, but there was anger there towards his Alpha, interesting!

"Not her damn you. Look away now!" he admonished me and yelled at them,

Fine, but he should have been more specific. What was wrong with me choosing her, did she not look like that now I wondered. Then I saw it in one of their minds, he's a bully and a wife-beater, except she's not his wife yet and doesn't want to be either! She has refused him several times and each time he gets more angry about it.

"You pathetic human, do not ever try to command me. Don't ever attempt to tell me what to do again! Besides, you wanted a woman, what's wrong with your own?" I sneer loudly at him,

He had the brains and decency to step back, though grudgingly. I suddenly changed my appearance into an image of one of us as the reaper I'd seen long ago. Maybe the scythe was a little much, but they all knew who I was now. Death, clothed from head to foot in black and my face blocked by the voluminous hood! That actually scared them back to their human selves. So there I was standing with several young naked guys. I couldn't help it, it was so funny, and I start to laugh my head off. Did it sound a little maniacal, yep it did! They were edging away from me, covering their junk, all except Paul. That boy had the innate confidence of one who knew how good he looked. But enough of this nonsense someone had to clean up this mess and they are it.

"Funs over boys, time to clean up this unholy mess!" I say loudly,

I outline the plan, watching Sam's face; he does not like taking orders from a woman at all. The others all buckle down once cajoled by the one called Jared. Paul just likes to make his mouth go but works twice as hard as the others. Jacob they think should be their leader, but is still young and not yet ready. Regrettably, he's not ever going to be anything more than their chief, but the real Alpha is amongst them. Within an hour they have the scene set and I'm able to take two of my souls downstairs. Yes two, the guy who died of fright had killed a family years ago. Whilst drunk driving a stolen car, he wiped out a family of six in an instant and ran from the scene! There is no statute of limitations in my line of work; a sin is a sin regardless! So now in death, he will be made to pay the penance for his sins.

They called it in, a tragic accident, saying they assumed a deer ran out in front of the driver he swerved the bus flipped and smashed into a tree before bursting into flames. They pulled two passengers out, one dead the other dying, she was slurring nonsensical words and her face had dropped on one side, a stroke victim most likely. But the flames and the smoke wouldn't let them get to the driver or the other two unconscious passengers. I left them to it and did my soul-ferrying thing; they were surprised upstairs, not expecting anyone until after I arrived, typical. Downstairs said the more the merrier and they'd just hold him until the paperwork arrived. Way more organised for some reason that evaded me. By the time I returned the coroner and the cops had been and the little wolves were gone.

There was the newer scent of a vampire in the air though, as well as a delicious human male scent. But I was too wrapped up in the sense of foreboding I felt and knew I had to stay. I switched to my invisible mode and set off for the reservation, I had to keep an eye on him, he was going to die soon and his soul was not joining the spirits in the sky that's for sure! I wandered around until I found Emily Young's little house and plonked mine down next to it. The minute it appeared then so did my back story. To be honest, I really don't understand how it works, but the house makes them believe they know me and always have. I was now part of the tribe and a good friend to Emily, so I went over to see her and she was thankful I did. He was there bothering her, no badgering her, trying to convince her into taking him as her imprint.

I got everything downloaded from the house as I walked over; she was not interested and did not believe he was her imprint. Emily believes someone else was and that Sam was forcing his way between them. He was Alpha ordering the imprinter away and trying to use coercion on her. Technically he had broken all the rules by telling her anything when she was not his imprint. He was not happy to see me, but he didn't recognise me as death this time.

"What the fuck do you want Sabé? I was talking to Emily about something private!" he spat at me,

"No, you were bullying her! I wonder how much the elders will like that, Sam Uley? She has the right to say no and you know it! Now fuck off, before I call for help!" I say and he growls but stomps off,

"I can't take much more Sabé, he scares me and I know he's not my imprint! I only want to be with Embry and Sam is stopping us, I know he is! It's not fair, it's not right!" Emily sobbed to me,

It was time to start whispering in a few elders ears, he was using his position as Alpha to steal someone else's imprint! Well, look at that, a council meeting. I flit around them all and place the thoughts of imprinting in their minds and let them talk. It only takes a minute before Emily's name comes up and her dislike of Sam Uley!

"He's adamant she's his imprint, but that girl does not even like him" Billy Black the chief muttered,

"Is it because he's not the real Alpha maybe?" Harry Clearwater asks the room,

I give them the idea he might be using his Alpha status to keep her from her real imprint and to ask Emily who she's drawn towards. Since Sam broke the rules already and told her all about the wolves!

"We need to talk to Emily Young. Harry, she's your niece, invite her to your house and we'll talk to the poor girl" Old Quil says nodding his head,

"I'll get Leah to invite her and Sabé to lunch tomorrow. Someone make sure Sam is out of the way" Harry answered,

"I'll send him into town. Tell him to make sure Charlie isn't looking too hard at that bus business. Sam's a damn fool for letting them be seen!" Billy informs them all in an annoyed tone,

Lunch went well, the elders arrived and talked to Emily, it became apparent quite quickly that she was not, could not be Sam's imprint as he terrified her and made her feel unclean! But it was more than possible she was Embry's, Billy looked uncomfortable about that, but said nothing. Looks like he might need a little prodding to do the right thing! I silently followed him home and watch him wrestle with his own conscience.

"Pride's a sin old man. Would you sit by and watch your own son have his imprint stolen to save face? Embry is the rightful Alpha, but because you have hidden your little secret, he doesn't know he can break Sam's hold and save Emily! You need to stop this before someone is hurt or dies!" I say and he flinches,

"Who are you? What can I do?" he basically whines and any respect I had for him diminishes,

"Well, I'm not your damned conscience, because it looks like you don't have one Billy Black!" I sneer as I materialize as the green wolf in front of him,

"Death! Why are you here, have you come for me?" the coward asks relieved,

"No, not yet! You will tell Embry he is Alpha! That he is your son and you will do it today! Don't make me damn you, Billy Black, I can and I will. Plus I'll still tell everyone and your death will mean nothing!" I spit at him so angrily,

I really can't but he doesn't know that and I am not telling him. This is ridiculous and I'm getting really annoyed. It's well seen why I ferry the dead, I just can't cope with the living very well! That saying not suffering fools lightly, that's me. But it appears Billy fears for his life more than he first thought. So once I just disappear he called the boy over and told him the truth. That he was Alpha and Jake would be Chief, not because he was illegitimate, but because he was only half Quileute. The Chief must be full Quileute on both sides. Embry nodded and said he knew anyway, had for many years. But that he was happy to be Alpha and would take over immediately. I sensed something was wrong and rushed over to Emily's house. Sam had been told to leave her alone, she was not his imprint and they knew he'd lied!

Incensed he decided to take what she refused to give, but Emily was not giving in. Her clothes were ripped and he was straddling her body when I arrived.

"Fuck off Sabé or I'll do you next!" Sam spat at me and I turned into the wolf,

Yeah, the slathering big black one, which distracted him enough for Emily to grab the frying pan she'd dropped and smash his nose in. She then added two more adrenaline-filled blows knocking him out. She could not see me and neither could Embry who rushed in at that point. He gently wrapped her in the throw from her settee and started to lead her away. Sam suddenly came to phasing on the spot and lunged, catching Emily's arm with his claws. Embry rounded on him as a man and ordered him to stand down,

"I am the Alpha here Sam Uley, stand down now!" he yelled in his new Alpha voice.

But Sam was just so enraged he was losing everything and as Embry said that the power left Sam's body and he shrunk in size. He still leapt at the human Embry, meaning to rip his head off. Embry did not step back or flinch he met the attack head-on and punched a hole into Sam's chest and pulled his beating heart from his body. He had been using a true Alpha power that Sam didn't have, he was listening to every thought passing through Sam's head and Embry knew he had to die. He would never stop trying to have Emily and he would take her by force eventually. I quickly left and came back as Sabé, running to Emily who had luckily passed out with shock before the killing blow. The cut on her arm was from shoulder to elbow but it was only one gash.

I told Embry to seal it with his saliva and it closed in front of our eyes, leaving only a thin line, barely noticeable. I suggested he call an emergency meeting now and as he turned away I slipped away and gathered my house with me removing myself from the memories of the Quileutes. I padded forward dragging Sam Uley's soul as it twisted and fought, I laughed at his useless attempts because he knew where he was going.

"Don't worry Sam; you'll love it down there. The place is filled with evil bastards just like you!" I said as I handed him over,

"Oh, we've been waiting on this one!" the guard said taking hold of Sam and sinking below the ground out of sight forever.
