Rated: T

"I'm fine!" Chloe said to her phone, which was being kept pressed to her ear by her shoulder and she was carrying a medium sized box.

The redhead chuckled onto the phone, placing the box on the floor of an unfurnished open living space, grabbing the phone as she looked around.

"It's okay, I have Aubrey and Stacie help me move in, I'll have to put some of the furniture together but it's okay, you don't have to come all the way down here to help," Chloe rolled her eyes.

A blonde girl walked up beside her, carrying a bigger box, placing it on the floor next to Chloe before catching her breath. She was wearing a ponytail, shorts, a white top and a flannel shirt over it and a bandana on her head. She put her hands on her hips as she waited for her redheaded friend to hang up the phone.

"That's alright, I'll call you if I need you," Chloe said. "Okay, thanks dad."

Chloe hung up and put her phone in her back pocket before turning to face her blonde friend.

"Are you kidding? Your dad was offering help and you turned him down?" the blonde asked exasperated.

"Aubrey, it's fine, my dad's almost 70, I don't want him driving down 5 hours to help me move in," Chloe said. "I have you guys."

"Oh that makes me feel great, Chlo, but really, a little help couldn't hurt," a tall brunette walked past them in the direction of the open kitchen, placing a medium sized box on the island.

"Guys, two of my brothers are coming in tomorrow to help me put the furniture together, okay? I just didn't want my dad to come, he already has a bit of a heart problem," Chloe said.

"Oh," the two said, looking relieved.

"Before you complain any further, my brothers couldn't come for the move in," Chloe said.

The two nodded.

"Well, you owe us big fucking time, I was going to enjoy some incredible love making tonight," the brunette said, coming closer to the other two. "But with all this carrying boxes around stuff you might leave my girlfriend sore to do so."

The blonde laughed, nudging her with her hip.

"Still thinking with your downstairs brain, I see," she said.

"I don't have a downstairs brain," the brunette frowned.

"Could've fooled me," the blonde said. "Besides, I work out, Stace, I won't be too sore."

"Score!" the brunette celebrated as the blonde chuckled and placed a kiss on her cheek.

"Alright, come on guys, if we get the kitchen stuff in we can order a pizza and not have to eat it on our laps," Chloe said, urging the two to go back to the truck.

It took a few days to get the furniture in the master bedroom all in order, but Chloe and her brothers got it done. Chloe then unpacked her clothes and everything she needed and the kitchen was also put together. Later on, was the ensuite bathroom and then the living room was the next thing.

Chloe had made one of the other bedrooms into an office space, so there was a desk, a bookcase, a couple armchairs and her computer. Granted, she still had a lot of books to unpack and stuff to organize but for now she could work from there in case she needed to.

The redhead was an attorney and most of the time she went to her office to work but there were rare occasions where she could work from home. She didn't really like it at the moment, though, it just reminded her that her new home was a complete mess.

On the weekend, Chloe took the time to unpack some of her stuff, especially in her office and living room. She got the TV all set up and working and worked on the coffee table before her bell rang. She frowned but got up, seeing through the window that it was a short brunette standing outside on her front porch. She got up and went to open the door.

"Hi! I see you just moved in, I'm your neighbor, my name is Florencia, but call me Flo," the woman said, shaking Chloe's hand. "I live across the street, if you need anything don't hesitate."

Chloe smiled. The woman had an accent but she looked friendly. The redhead looked across the street and her house looked cozy but a bit smaller than Chloe's.

"Thank you, I'm Chloe," Chloe said. "It's nice to meet you."

"You too," Flo said. "I hate to be nosey but how are you sleeping at night?"

Chloe frowned in confusion at the question.

"I'm sleeping just fine," Chloe said. "Why?"

"Well I imagine you know about.. You know, about your house?" Flo asked.

Chloe tilted her head, still very confused. The woman seemed to read her thoughts, becoming a little embarrassed.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, look at the time, I have to be somewhere. If you need anything, just knock," Flo said, already halfway down the walkway. "Bye!"

"Wait, what about my house?" Chloe asked, but the brunette waved and smiled, crossing the street.

Chloe spent the next few days googling her address, neighborhood and sometimes even city to try and get to know something. Of course, nothing came up in her research, unfortunately. She sighed in frustration. She tried going to Flo's to ask but the woman never seemed to be home anymore.

Stacie: figure out what's wrong yet, Chlo?

Aubrey: what could be wrong, though? Nothing came up in the inspection

Chloe: I know, besides, my agent never told me anything. I think maybe this girl was confused or something, or whatever the problem was, it was fixed before it was sold

Stacie: absolutely

Chloe shook her head in relief, closing iMessage and going back to Pinterest where she usually browsed with decor ideas, when she suddenly caught something with the corner of her eye.

Right there on her bookshelf there was a sticky note stuck to one of the shelves. It was a blue one and there was something written on it. She frowned, getting up from her computer and walking towards it, grabbing it.

Hey friend

Chloe flipped to see if there was anything written on the other side, but there was nothing. She didn't recognize the handwriting, though. She sat down at her desk and took a picture of it with her phone, quickly sending it to her friends.

Chloe: this was on my bookcase just now… this isn't my handwriting

Stacie: oh shit!

Aubrey: do you think your neighbor gave you this?

Chloe: how could she? She doesn't have my key, the windows were all closed and the doors were locked!

Stacie: did you get high or something and forgot you wrote that?

Chloe: why would I write "hey friend" to myself?

Stacie: I'm going for the most logical explanation here

Chloe kept the note next to her computer, staring at it with a frown. She had absolutely no idea what to do about it, but as far as she was concerned, it was just one little note.

Chloe: I'll keep an eye out, in case I find another one of these notes, I'll do something

Chloe placed the note in the first drawer on her desk, already thinking of what to do in case there were any more notes. She never saw her neighbor's handwriting, so she couldn't know it was her. And she was getting copies of her key to give to Aubrey and Stacie in case there was an emergency, but she hadn't gotten around to that yet.

Chloe had Aubrey and Stacie over, she was making dinner for them and they were all drinking wine, celebrating Chloe was finally settled into her new house. She smiled as Aubrey raised her glass to make a toast.

"A toast to Chloe and her first accomplishment of an adult life: her first house," Aubrey said.

The three clinked their glasses together and took a sip.

"It's been crazy but I'm so glad it's over," Chloe said. "And I'm so glad this house was at such a low price."

"That's always good news," Stacie said.

Chloe checked the oven to see that her fish was going well before moving to another lower cabinet to see a dish she could serve the food in. She grabbed an oval dish and set it on the island.

"Stace, I have the book you let me borrow," she said. "I need to give it back to you before I forget it."

"Oh great, it survived the move," Stacie said, making Aubrey chuckle.

Chloe shook her head with a chuckle before making her way upstairs to her office. She went to grab the book from the shelf but couldn't see it. She looked in her desk and it was there with a sticky note on it. She froze for a while before making her way over and grabbing the book and the note.

They don't want me to talk to you but it's important that I do

Chloe felt chills up her spine, looking out the window. She checked, making sure it was locked before going back downstairs with the book and the note.

"Guys, guys look!" she said, showing them the note.

"Jeez, Chlo, your neighbor is a creep!" Stacie said.

"When did you find that?" Aubrey asked.

"Just now," Chloe said. "Guys, I was in that room the moment you guys rang the doorbell, we've been downstairs the entire time, how could she have come in and placed that note during that time? We didn't hear anything!"

"Chloe, you should call the police and definitely install security cameras," Aubrey said.

"Crap," Chloe groaned. "You're right, can I call the police after we eat?"

"Sure,"

Chloe knew the police wouldn't be a lot of help, since all she had were two sticky notes that were left in her office and no other place in her house, but they did recommend her getting security cameras, which was what she found herself doing on a sunny Sunday morning.

The redhead parked in her driveway and was about to make her way inside when she caught a glimpse of her neighbor doing some yard work outside. She didn't even think twice, crossing the street and making her way over.

"Are you crazy?" she asked.

The girl looked at her with wide and confused eyes.

"Why are you leaving me these notes? What do you want to talk to me about?" Chloe asked.

"I haven't left you any note," Flo said.

"I found them," Chloe said. "And you said that weird thing about my house but I found nothing wrong with it."

"Of course you wouldn't find," Flo said. "Everybody around made sure no one would ever find out, that's why they didn't tell you."

"Tell me what?" Chloe asked.

"There's something weird about your house," Flo said. "I don't know what it is, the energy, the history, I don't know. I can't explain it but weird things always happen there."

"Weird like what?" Chloe asked.

"When my family and I moved in here there was a family living there, they had two kids," Flo said. "They had moved in a week before we did and they seemed nice."

Chloe nodded, but she couldn't put a finger on the strange feeling inside her, like chills. Like the hot breeze was suddenly too cold. Her heartbeat was also increasing slowly.

"After about two months, things changed. We heard screaming, crying, all kinds of things. After a while the police were called and the two parents were arrested, accused of killing their kids," Flo said.

"Oh my God," Chloe said under her breath.

"But they weren't convicted because the children's bodies were never found," Flo said. "The parents were sent to a mental hospital after claiming the house took their kids."

"Jesus," Chloe said.

"And before you moved in there was a girl living there. She said the same thing the others did; about the notes and the screams and the crying and the walking around," Flo said.

"What happened to her?" Chloe heard her voice shaking.

"I don't know, we left for vacation in Guatemala for two weeks, when we came back, the house was for sale," Flo said.

Chloe remained quiet, looking back at her house. She sighed.

"Be careful," Flo said.

Chloe looked back at her and nodded.

"Thanks," she said, going back out.

"Well of course she's gonna come up with some crazy story!" Aubrey said. "She doesn't want you to think she's actually doing this!"

"By the way, Chlo, have you installed the cameras yet?" Stacie asked.

"Yeah," Chloe said. She was talking to her friends via FaceTime on her computer. "They're working already, I have the app on my phone."

Chloe unlocked her phone and went to the app, showing it on her computer camera. She put her phone down and frowned when she saw Aubrey looking at the computer screen with a weird look.

"Chloe.. Who's that behind you?" she asked.

Chloe turned around, her heart beating wildly against her chest but she felt relieved when there was no one behind her. She placed a hand over her heart and looked back at her computer.

"Jesus Aubrey, you scared the crap out of me," she said.

"Well, I could swear there was someone behind you," Aubrey said before shrugging. "Guess I was seeing things."

"Check your cameras everyday, Chlo," Stacie said.

"I will," Chloe said. "This is an older house, I'm sort of used to hearing things, sometimes I can swear there are people walking up and down the hall."

"Jesus," Stacie said. "I just got chills."

Chloe chuckled before yawning.

"I have to go to sleep, I've got an early day tomorrow," she said. "See you guys."

"Night Chlo,"

"Night Chloe!"

Chloe smiled and hung up. She grabbed her computer and took it upstairs to her room. She turned off all the lights, went to the bathroom to brush her teeth. She was so tired, she could feel her eyes closing involuntarily. She jumped when she heard a soft and low child's laughter coming from downstairs. Again, her heart was beating wildly against her chest. She put her brush down, spitting onto the sink and wiping her mouth before leaving the room. She began turning all the lights before going to the staircase, turning the lights. She watched for a while and didn't hear anything.

I must be going crazy, she thought. But then, she heard a noise coming from her office and turned off the lights on the staircase, going to the office. She turned the lights on and there was no one, but there on her desk there was another post it note. She frowned before picking it up.

You need to leave, you're in danger

Chloe immediately went to her room to pick up her phone. She connected to the camera app and went back in time, looking at the cameras in the office. She didn't see anything for a while, until she saw something that resembled the shape of a person, but it was weird, it also looked like smoke. The shape took the post it note from the first drawer and scribbled something on it, sticking to the desk before leaving. Chloe checked the camera in the hall but never saw the shape again. She sighed, rubbing her temples. She did not want a ghost in her house.

"Are you sure that's what you saw?" Aubrey asked, looking understandably skeptical.

"I'm sure," Chloe said. "I know how stupid this sounds and I know it's hard to believe but it looked like a shadow wrote the note to me."

"Chloe, are you sure someone isn't poisoning you?" Stacie asked.

"I'm sure, I'll send you the footage," Chloe said. "It's weird and I don't know what to do, how can I be in danger?"

"Well, you have cameras, you already talked to the police.." Aubrey said.

"Yeah but I'm scared," Chloe said. "What the fuck do I do?"

"Keep the phone close in case anything happens," Stacie said.

Chloe sighed and groaned, resting her face on the table.

"You guys are no help," she said.

"Well sorry, do you want me to call the Ghostbusters for you?" Stacie asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Well Ed and Lorraine Warren could help, too," Chloe said, before raising her head.

"Sorry, they're both dead," Aubrey said.

"Ugh," Chloe said. "I'll see if my neighbor offers me any advice."

Chloe got up from the table they were at the food court. Their lunch break was over, so the three collected their trash, throwing it out before going back inside their building and to their office.

When she got home later that day, Chloe parked her car but went straight across the street, ringing the doorbell. She looked back at her house and got chills. She looked at the second floor, at the window where her office was and frowned, swearing she saw a brunette woman standing there. Right when she was about to run over, she heard the door open and she turned around, looking at her smiling neighbor.

"Chloe, hello," she smiled.

"Flo," Chloe said before turning around. The woman was no longer there. "I need your help, I don't know what to do."

Flo frowned and tilted her head.

"With what?"

"My house," Chloe said. "I keep getting these notes that say I'm in danger and I hear things and I see things, I don't know what to do."

Flo nodded and stepped aside, letting her in. Chloe was relieved to be somewhere that wasn't her house. The girl's house was full of natural light, very much like her own, but it was a little smaller and the furniture was different.

Flo took her out to the backyard and offered her to sit before giving her a glass of water.

"Listen, I don't know a lot about your house," Flo said. "But I get a very weird energy from it."

"What can I do? I don't.. I don't know," Chloe said. "The notes I keep getting say I'm in danger."

"You might be," Flo said. "If I were you, I'd leave."

"And go where? I just bought the house, I don't have money to buy another one!" Chloe said.

"Sorry but it's the only thing I can think of," Flo said. "Sell the house and leave."

Chloe groaned.

"I can't," Chloe said.

"Well, you can stay here for a while or with a friend until you sell your house," Flo said. "But you really should get out of there."

Chloe sighed again. She thought for a while, drinking the water Flo brought her before smiling at her.

"Well thanks for your help, Flo," she said. "I'll think about what I can do."

"You're welcome," Flo said, standing up.

Chloe gathered all the courage she could, unlocking her front door and going inside. She looked around and groaned. Why couldn't her house be so simple and quiet and have no problem?

As she walked inside, she frowned, looking at the kitchen counter. She got closer, seeing it was a couple papers of a printed article with yet another post it note stuck to it.

Hey friend. This is me. Now GET OUT, this place is dangerous!

Chloe took the note from the article and gasped. The note was covering the picture of the woman she'd seen at the window in her office not minutes before. She got chills up her spine again, reading the title.

Young woman disappears from her home

Beca Mitchell was reported missing by her parents after they were unable to track her down. Police found no evidence of intrusion, but Mitchell's car and belongings were still in her home.

Chloe skimmed through the article, gasping again when she saw a part that was underlined with the same pen that wrote the note.

Police found no evidence there was someone else in her house and her body was never found. If you see Beca Mitchell, please call this number.

Chloe put the article down, her hands were trembling. She looked around herself before quietly and carefully going upstairs to her office, where she'd seen Beca.

"Beca? Is that you?" she asked but didn't expect some sort of response. "What happened to you? Why am I in danger?"

She looked around, expecting a note to show up somewhere. She felt a little stupid that nothing was there and went to her room. She sat on her bed and texted Stacie and Aubrey.

Chloe: found an article about the previous owner of this house, she went missing. To this day, nobody knows where she is

Stacie: and?

Chloe: apparently, she's the one leaving notes to me

Aubrey: Chloe… I say this with all the love in my heart, but have you gone completely insane? So this woman is what, living in your house?

Chloe: I don't know, but I literally never heard of this woman before, when I googled my house, nothing ever came up

Chloe dropped her phone when she heard a door slam. She hurried over, seeing a note stuck to her office door.

The house collects souls. It left us trapped here for eternity. You need to RUN!

Chloe opened the office door and saw a few more notes on her desk.

We're all trapped here where we died. If you don't run, it'll kill you, too

Chloe panicked.

"But.. how do I escape?" she asked out loud, not really expecting an answer, but reading the other note.

The longer you stay, the tighter will be the house's hold on you

Chloe sighed.

"I'll run, don't worry, Beca," she said. "I'll run."

Chloe went to her bedroom, grabbing her phone.

Chloe: Aubrey, I'm coming over, I need to stay with you for a while

Aubrey: sure, you're always welcome, is everything okay?

Chloe: I'll explain when I get there

Chloe grabbed a duffle bag from her closet and started putting her clothes in there. She then went to her office and grabbed her computer and a few of her belongings. She would just grab the essentials and leave the rest for another day, she just couldn't spend another night at the house.

Chloe then went downstairs, grabbing her keys and putting the bag inside. She hated how fast it got dark outside, it felt like it was midnight already. She took one last look at her house before getting inside her car. She started and drove off to Aubrey's house, feeling relief wash over her.

Chloe parked her car in front of Aubrey's building complex and got her stuff out, going inside. She stepped in the elevator and closed her eyes, feeling her heart start calming down from all that just happened.

When the elevator stopped at Aubrey's floor, Chloe was quick to run out and ring Aubrey's doorbell. She only felt safe when the blonde opened and she hugged her tight, still shaking.

"What happened?" Aubrey asked, letting her in, closing the door.

"Oh my God," Chloe said. "Aubrey, the notes, they were all telling me to leave! I know you don't believe me but Beca was in the house, she died there."

"Well, I'm just glad you're safe," Aubrey said. "Why don't you get some rest and tomorrow we'll talk this through alright?"

Chloe nodded and took a deep breath.

"Unfortunately, you'll have to sleep on the couch," Aubrey said. "But it's comfy, I can get you a pillow and a blanket."

"Thanks," Chloe smiled, sitting down on the blonde's maroon couch.

Aubrey smiled at her before going to her room. She came back with a warm blanket and placed it over the redhead.

"I hope you'll feel better tomorrow," she said.

"Me too," Chloe said. She felt exhaustion take over and took off her shoes. She quickly changed into her pjs and lied down on the couch.

"I'll be up for a while, if you need anything," Aubrey said.

"Thanks so much, Bree," Chloe said. "Goodnight."

"Night," Aubrey said, closing her bedroom door.

Chloe looked around at her best friend's apartment. She couldn't help but notice how different the energy here was, it was good, almost like she felt completely safe. She never noticed her house didn't give her that same vibe, not until she was out of her house.

Chloe felt so well rested the next day as she felt the light stream into the room. She yawned and stretched out her arms before opening her eyes. She quickly got up and out of bed, rubbing her face. She went straight downstairs to her kitchen to make coffee. It wasn't until she looked out of one of the windows in her house that she frowned. She looked around the place.

Yep. She was definitely in her house.

"Oh no," she said, feeling despair and fear wash over her.

Chloe put her mug down and ran upstairs. The house felt exactly the same, but different at the same time. She looked out the windows and she couldn't see anyone outside, not a car, not a soul, nothing. The sky was white but she couldn't see any clouds, all she knew was the sky was white.

"No!" she said, going to her office. There was no note anywhere. "Shit, no!"

Chloe turned around when she heard children laughing and saw a blonde girl of about 8 years old at the doorway of her office. As soon as Chloe laid eyes on her though, she ran out with a laugh.

Chloe's eyes were filled with tears in fear. She walked out of her office and was met with Beca standing in the doorway and the same blonde girl a few feet behind, at the top of the stairs. She saw Chloe again and ran down the stairs, also laughing. Beca looked behind at the girl descending the stairs before looking up at Chloe with a sad look.

"I'm so sorry, Chloe," she said. "I tried to help you, I really did. I thought I could get you out of here."

Chloe still looked at her in disbelief, feeling a boy come running past her and bump into her. The boy looked like he was younger than the girl but he was also blonde and he was definitely her sibling. He looked back at Chloe, running past Beca to the staircase.

"But.. But… I left! I got out though!" Chloe said.

"I told you, the house collects souls," Beca said. "It just gave you the illusion that you got out. It had a tight grip on your soul long before you thought about getting out."

Chloe buried her head in her hands and started crying. She backed up against a wall and slid down until she was sitting on the floor. She felt an arm wrap around her and didn't look up, she knew it was Beca. The brunette rubbed her back up and down.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Beca moved her feet out of the way as a tall blonde man walked past them down the hall. He looked at them with a sad look, but went inside the guest bedroom.

"Welcome to life after death," Beca said with a sigh. She just held the redhead while she cried.
