The Eyes of a Monster
Day One
Hello? Well, uh, if you're reading this - or listening to this I should probably say - then you might find yourself baffled. But don't worry, I am using my Animus Magic to record everything I say on this scroll in hopes that someone may happen to find it . . . and learn the horrors of what I have been experiencing here. I won't tell you my name, because I want to keep it secret from the . . . thing that might come for me, and that no power hungry dragon will find me and use me for evil. So I'll call myself . . . Javendar.
The reason I'm talking to you now is because I want other dragons to know the truth, even if they don't believe a word I'm saying, I just hope they will believe what I'm about to tell whoever happens to be listening to this.
I'm a dragon that goes to the new school that opened up just a few weeks ago called Jade Mountain Academy. I've got to say it is pretty nice there. Everyone is so nice, even the staff is better than I expected - at least, that's what I thought. As most of you may know, the academy was founded, and built by the Dragonets of Destiny: Starflight, Clay, Sunny, Queen Glory of the RainWings, and . . . Tsunami. They are heroes for stopping the War of SandWing Succession, but from what I experienced . . . let's just say: You should never meet your heroes.
I remember when I met my teacher when I walked into my first class - it was as clear as day. It was Tsunami. She seemed so nice at first, but for some odd reason I had a feeling that something was off. Her eyes didn't seem right to me. They weren't the eyes of the hero you may see her as, they weren't the eyes of a dragon just trying to make things right. Instead they looked . . . I guess you could say: Otherworldly, in a sense of dread and fear. The tone in her voice was that of gratitude, but the eyes . . . oh those eyes, I still shake when I think of them. They looked completely normal to anyone, but when I saw them, they were . . . not . . . dragon.
The day started off as normal, but my feelings weren't, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong - that emotion clinged to me like a disease all day; but to me it seemed like years rather than seven hours. This school is one of those schools where you stay there until summer break, so in my room that night, I had what had to be the scariest dream I ever had in my years on this earth that would scar me for life - and when I say scar, I mean it sticks to me like an actual mark, not just trauma.
I was in what looked like a rainforest - the RainWing Kingdom I presumed. The skies were dark and cloudy, and it was raining blood instead of little droplets of water. Because of the blood, it made everything around me slowly turn red, and the air was filled with the smell of decay. I was standing on the outskirts of the forest. I looked ahead and saw Queen Glory in the middle of a grassy field. A few feet behind her were dead RainWings. Their bodies were mangled, and some of their eyes dangled from their sockets. Glory was shaking her head extremely violently, and she let out not a roar, but a bloodcurdling scream, something that you would not hear from a dragon. Then . . . she looked at me. What made matters worse, her eyes were black and empty, with blood trickling down her face like tears, and let out an ear piercing scream.
I covered my ears and closed my eyes tight, and when I opened them, I was in a completely different place: A desert. It was nighttime, and was surprisingly cold for a very humid place. I looked up, and to my surprise I saw Sunny flying through the sky at an incredible speed - faster than a SkyWing it looked like. She roared, but it wasn't a dragon roar, it sounded (how do I say this?) . . . indragon. Off in the distance, there were other dragons, but they looked . . . dead. Walking on like ghosts with chains not attached to their wrists, but dug into their arms. Sunny flew around the place as if she owned it, shouting orders to the dragons, and if they didn't obey, she would ruthlessly breathe her fire straight at their faces. They would scream in pain as they were set on fire, then drop to the ground and die, having their brains burnt from pink to a dry, char black. But if they didn't burn . . . their heads would explode instead, and blood would fly everywhere. Sunny then flew towards me, fire erupting in her mouth. As she got closer to me, I saw her empty, soulless eyes. Just like Glory's, with blood falling from her face like tears.
But apparently, that wasn't the worst of all the sights I've seen.
I found myself standing a few yards away from Jade Mountain. I looked up, and saw the horrors of what had happened to the beautiful school. The mountain itself was up in flames, spreading at an alarmingly fast pace, and dragons of all ages tried to fly away as far as their wings would let them. As I looked closer, I noticed something on the peak of the mountain. Since it was a dream my vision was blurry, but I could just make out some kind of figure. As I examined it more, it looked like a dragon . . . a SeaWing to be exact. I then realized it was Tsunami. She slowly turned towards me. What I saw will stay in my head until my lifespan will reach its end. The expression of muder was written all over her face; her teeth were razor sharp like knives; and her eyes . . . oh those eyes - they will haunt my dreams everytime I sleep, and I remember every single little detail. The pupils were thin like a lizard's, and the rest of the color was bloodshot red.
She looked down at me. Upon further examination, I noticed she wasn't flying . . . she was floating. Motionless, suspended in the air. I suddenly felt extremely exhausted even though I was dreaming, and found that I was not able to move, and the fires were inching towards me. I shook with the last bit of strength I had left inside me, and when my consciousness re-entered my body, I woke up and sat straight up in my bed.
I was panting rapidly, as if I had just finished a race, and my whole body was drenched in sweat. But it was not hot at all; as a matter of fact my room was freezing. After I calmed myself down, I tried to ponder what had just happened. The question that poisoned my brain the most was: Was Tsunami holding me down? Or could it be that I was just unable to move being half awake and half asleep at the same time? Either way, I was scared for my life.
Day Two
I went to class as usual, and everything seemed normal so far, in fact I didn't even see Tsunami at all - at least not yet. After my third class of the morning, I looked at my schedule, and noticed it was near lunchtime, and my stomach dropped as I saw what class I had next: Hunting Session with . . . Tsunami. I don't know why I went there, I guess I just didn't want to get in trouble. We flew for what seemed like hours, until we came across the rainforest. I immediately remembered my dream, and just like it, the skies were dark and populated with clouds - rain was coming.
Tsunami told us to find any kind of meat or animal to bring back to the school for everyone to eat. I searched for about twenty minutes and couldn't even find a bug - which I found to be very weird considering I was in a rainforest that just happens to be home to all kinds of insects. I eventually came across a beach.
I walked up to the edge of the sand, and to my relief - and surprise - there were tons of fish in there. All kinds, right next to the shore. I dove my claw in the water, and pulled out a shark that was half my size. I was impressed, but then I asked myself a question: Why were these fish swimming so close to land like this? Maybe they sense danger, I thought to myself.
Although I was skeptical, I brushed the feeling off and began to walk back, but I immediately stopped due to a loud splash emanating from behind me. I quickly turned around, and saw a large geiser just a few yards out to sea. I looked down and watched as all the fish that were present get pulled towards it. Suddenly I heard a loud scream that seemed to come from the geiser. I gazed up, and in seconds I saw . . . her. She emerged from the wall of water without using her wings, just floating, motionless, and lifeless, almost like a statue, and what made the situation more terrifying, her eyes were red.
I recalled the dream again, and I was so scared I dropped the shark and ran back to where we first landed. In record time, I made it back to our starting point, and that was when it began to rain.
Everyone stared at me in confusion. They were all holding their bait, and in the middle of the crowd: That SeaWing. She asked me where I had been for the past few minutes, and that they had been calling my name - just by her being here, and hearing her voice made me feel uncomfortable. I knew very well that no one would believe me for what I saw, so I came up with an excuse that I tried to catch a rhino but got away from me. Of course the teacher was disappointed, and gave me a D- for the time being.
I'm now starting to think that what I have been seeing is not real, and I'm just nervous about this school year. I'm also beginning to wonder if this other Tsunami is someone else.
Day Three
. . . I think this is going to be my last entry.
It was the fifth day of being at the school, and the counselors ordered that this will be the last day of school for a while. I don't know exactly why, but I heard some dragons say that something happened to one of the teachers. They said he was attacked by someone in the nearby forest.
As I was walking to my third class of the day, a MudWing ran past me. She seemed to be in a rush, I thought that was odd, but I didn't think much of it and walked into the classroom. I didn't realize how early it was, there was no one in the room, and as the curious one in my family I decided to check things out. As I got to the second row, I noticed something on the ground. It looked like a cactus with a rope wrapped around it, and sliding across that rope was a flame. My heart began to race as I realized this was a Dragonflame Cacti. I quickly looked around and saw two other dragons coming into the room.
I started to run towards the door as I shouted: "RUN!"
But it was too late. The cacti exploded, sending waves of fire all across the room. I don't really know what happened to the other two, but I remember the blast blew me out the window. I fell what seemed to be a thousand feet down, and with quick thinking, I glided to the ground. The last thing I remembered before fainting was that I looked back, and saw those red eyes, beaming down at me.
I remember having another horrific dream: I was in what looked like a throne room of some kind of kingdom. I couldn't tell which one it was, but from the looks of it, it seemed to be the SeaWing Kingdom - but I wasn't so sure. I lied there on the ground, unable to move. I realized I had scratches and bruises all around my body - maybe they were from the fall. I looked ahead, and again saw that dragon, eyes red and teeth terrifyingly sharp. Her claws were driven into the chest of another SeaWing, blood falling from the wound, and his neck was, I'll say . . . in the wrong position. I tried to look away, but my body still couldn't respond to what I wanted to do.
Then in an awful hoarse voice I heard her say: "It is my only way."
After that was said, Tsunami picked up the SeaWing, and drove her claw through his chest. A loud sound of bones cracking and organs turning echoed throughout the entire room, making my own blood tremble with fear I've never felt before.
I woke up hours later - because it was night outside and clouds covered the stars - and realized I was in the nursing area. Moving a muscle turned out to be painful, so I sat up slowly, and found that my head, wings, tail, arms, legs, and torso were in wraps, and my right leg seemed to be broken. I looked around, and the RainWing I saw in the classroom was a few beds down from where I was. My mind began to race with questions: Who put that Dragonflame Cacti there? Did Tsunami place it there? Was she trying to kill me? Or was it the MudWing?
Although more questions flooded through my head, I couldn't reflect on them no more due to a terrible cracking sound coming from behind me. I slowly turned to see what was happening. A closet door was slightly open, and even though the darkness consumed the room I could see . . . something, moving inside. It looked like whatever it was, it was eating something . . . I couldn't tell, but it was enjoying the feast. I hopped off my bed to warn the RainWing, but she wasn't there. I then heard growling from the closet. I slowly turned towards it. At the same time lightning struck, and immediately realized my decision was a complete negative, as the thing I saw would stay in my brain, all day, everyday, for the rest of my life. I am even shuddering while talking about it.
It looked just like Tsunami, but . . . hellish. Her head was shockingly in an upside down position; an extra mouth hung from the top of her head, along with an extra set of teeth on her head as well, and every single one of them was razor sharp in every maw she had. Her throat was split in two; claws freakishly jagged on hands and feet with bloody webbed talons; her tail was as long and thin as a whip; her wings filled with holes as if they were sliced up; her fins were much, much longer than they should be; her eyes were that same blood red color, her pupils so thin that you could barely see them.
Lightning struck again. She lifted her head and roared, so sinister and bloodcurdling that it felt as if my scales were about to fall off. Lightning struck twice. It began to rain, and I felt my heart was about to beat out of my chest as I saw that the thing she was eating . . . was that RainWing. I stood there frozen in fear, but pulled myself together, and ran out of the room for my life as I saw the shadow of that thing crawling towards me like a spider.
I dashed out of the room as fast as my body would let me in this condition, and went down the hallway. I had no idea what I would do next, but I needed to get away from that thing, and fast, because the last time I looked back, it was crawling along the walls, much faster now. It let out an unearthly growl as it followed me. In my state, I hoped my leg wouldn't give out as I added more pressure on it. I turned the corner and felt my leg crack. I fell down hard, the wind knocking out of me. Pain shot all throughout my body as I yelped, which had to be loud enough for someone in the next room to hear, but no one did.
Fear rushing through my blood, I quickly turned around to see if the thing was still there . . . it wasn't. I knew the counselor room had to be only a few hallways down, but hid myself in a corner, trying to keep my panicked breathing at a steady pace as I heard loud, calm footsteps trudge my way. I saw the thing. The dragon I have been told was Tsunami, walk by, breathing like no other dragon I heard before. Her face hardened with rage, searching for the prey it set eyes on when I first came here.
What was this creature? Was it actually Tsunami? No, it couldn't be - it had to have been something else, but what?
I watched it turn the corner, waited a few seconds, then breathed a sigh of relief. Because of my leg, I had to crawl to the counselor's room, and sure enough, I found it.
But as I was one door close to the room, I suddenly heard a hoarse growl. I looked up, and in the blink of an eye that thing felt down on top of me. I felt it dig its claws into my back as I screamed in pain, but still no one seemed to listen, or worse even care.
It pinned my head to the ground, I felt its hot breath on my face, and in an indescribable, terrible voice, it said: "It is my only way."
As I felt my lungs start to slowly turn in a circular motion, I grabbed her arm with my free hand and pulled it in the opposite direction. A loud bone cracking sound was heard as it roared in pain. While it hollered at its broken arm I took my chance and ran to the counselor room, and closed the door so fast I added more pain to my back, worsening the wound in the process.
I took a few seconds to regain my strength. As soon as I pulled myself together I turned around to get whatever help I could ask for. Outside the window, lightning struck, and as it illuminated the room, I let out a scream so loud I didn't even think I could produce such a noise.
Sunny, Clay, Starflight, and even that RainWing I saw before, all of them were spread across the room, dead. Clay's arms and legs were violently ripped off and stabbed back into their sockets. Starflight's head seemed to be sliced up that his face wasn't even recognizable. Poor Sunny's wings were ripped off and covering her body. Her eyes were gouged out, and her own tail was stabbed right through her stomach. And the RainWing . . . my stomach churns everytime I think of that scene. She looked like she was spat out after that monster ate her - that poor soul.
I ran out of the room without hesitation, and slammed the door behind me. I pressed my back to the door, putting my hand on my stomach, then I fell to the floor and threw up. I realized I barfed blood as well, but the next thing I knew was I heard a roar to my right, and thunder indicated that thing was charging at me with incredible speed. I picked myself up and started to run.
Loud footsteps pounded behind me as I ran through the corridors, trying to lose the thing, but at every turn I looked back only to see it gaining. I slammed on every door, hoping to get someone's attention. No one answered, no one heard, why couldn't they hear? By that point, my leg felt as if it was about to fall off - I could feel pounds of blood rushing down my back, and my breathing was hoarse, but thankfully steady. I felt like I was going to pass out. I thought I could get back to the nursing area to hopefully tend to my wounds enough so I could fly out of here, so that is where I went.
The more I limped, the more I slowed, and I knew that thing would be getting closer to me if I even decided to hesitate, so I did my absolute best to ignore the pain in my leg. I tried to back track, I tried to navigate where I once was, but panic made it almost impossible to remember. The breathing grew louder, the footsteps only a mere few feet away, but before I knew it, I found it. The nursing area. I was so happy that I was about to cry, but when I put pressure on my leg, I fell, and screamed.
Before I knew it the demon jumped down in front of me. It stood motionless, then it lifted up its broken arm, and snapped it back into place - it didn't have to use its other arm for support.
It lunged and lashed at me, but I moved back before it slit my neck. Although I darted that blow, it grabbed me and slowly dug its claws into my throat. I could tell it was enjoying this, because it produced a smile from both mouths so freakishly big I heard a small cracking sound. As blood trickled down my neck, I noticed a small table right behind me. I reached my arm out to it as much as I could. I managed to grab it, and swing it at the thing, and it broke over its head. I escaped its grasp as it tried to gain consciousness, but as it did, I charged with all my force and pushed it out the window. The thing fell while letting out a horrifying shriek. It tried to fly but hit the ground before it could catch the air. I took my chance and ran to the nursing area, all I hoped was that I lived to tend to my wounds.
So, here I am now, sitting on a bed in the nursing area, writing my final entry. I thankfully managed to tend to my wounds as much as I could, but I need to get to a doctor - I'm losing blood fast. I can also hear that thing lurking around the halls. The worst part is that I can hear other dragons being sliced up, but no screaming. The horrible sound of carving would sometimes be distant, other times it sounds close. On the bright side it doesn't know I'm here, at least for a while. I'm going to leave now, hopefully I can get to the RainWing Kingdom without falling out of the sky. Then right after I feel better, I'm coming back here, but whatever happens I don't want to look at the carnage that thing may have left behind.
There are things in this world that look normal, but have a deeper meaning on the inside. Although we don't wish to see these horrors, at some point in our lives we have to look them right in the eye. Sometimes it's just once, other times . . . those eyes of a monster never escape our thoughts.
