Chapter One
God Save the Queen
On a street in East Grinstead, a large crowd was singing the national anthem of the United Kingdom, God Save the Queen. A large street party was being held with men, women and children wearing party hats while eating, drinking and playing. A small, wireless radio was playing in the background.
"Today is the 7th June 1977," announced the voice of a male presenter, "the day of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee celebrations. Thousands of people have already lined the streets to celebrate this very special occasion."
Nearby, a woman was watching the celebrations. She was of an average height and had short, light-blonde hair that was tied into a bun. The woman simply looked around before sighing with worry.
Over at a red phone box, a nineteen year old girl was spraying the words 'God Save the Queen' on to it in green spraypaint. The girl had long black hair and was dressed in leather with black lipstick and black hair extensions. Standing next to her was a young man with short, dark brown hair. He was wearing a black shirt underneath a grey leather jacket, he also wore black trousers with black shoes. He too wore dark makeup and hair extensions. Both Erin and Kyle had badges pinned to their jackets, all of which were for anti-royalist groups.
"Nice one, Erin," cheered the boy before laughing, "This beats going to that jubilee party?"
"It sure does," replied Erin happily before giving the boy a light kiss on the cheek, "You know, Kyle, you're the only one who gets me. Fancy giving more phone boxes a bit of life."
"Sure thing, babe." answered Kyle.
The two began walking and soon found another phone box, which they gleefully sprayed with spraypaint while shouting 'God Save the Queen'. The couple then came across a police box.
"Brilliant." smirked Erin; grinning along with Kyle as they approached the police box.
Erin and Kyle began spraying black spraypaint along its side. Suddenly, the door flew open and a woman with short, curly, light-brown hair stepped out and gave the pair a stern look. "Can you graffiti somewhere else please, she's just been done up!" the woman hollered sternly.
Erin and Kyle just stared at the woman with bewildered expressions.
Over in an alleyway behind some terraced houses decorated with Union Jacks, there was suddenly a bright blue flash, accompanied by a loud bang. As the light vanished, a figure emerged. The figure was humanoid and covered in metal armour. The head did not look humanoid, appearing more alien with glowing bright-blue eyes. There was a gun attached to its right arm.
Mr Waynewright, who lived near by came out of his back door and headed towards the back garden gate. He was an elderly man with balding grey hair and a stubby grey beard. He wore a grubby raincoat and scruffy grey trousers. "Blasted kids!" he grumbled as he 3xited his back garden and entered the alleyway. Mr Waynewright spotted the figure and raised his walking stick.
"What do you think you're playing at you damn kid?" barked Mr Waynewright as he shook his walking stick at the figure, "Where did you get that costume from? Bit early for Halloween, init?"
The figure just stared blankly at Mr Waynewright.
"Come on, take that ridiculous costume off and face me you stupid brat!" snapped Mr Waynewright.
The elderly man marched towards the figure and whacked him across the face with his walking stick. Mr Waynewright stepped back in shock as he heard a loud clang, which made him drop his walking stick. "What the-
But Mr Waynewright became silent. His eyes widened in alarm as the figure raised the arm with the gun attached and fired. A bolt of emerald green energy shot out of the gun and struck Mr Waynewright, who screamed in horror.
Back at the TARDIS, the Doctor, Erin and Kyle turned as they heard a horrified scream.
"What was that?" asked Erin in shock.
"Nothing good." replied the Doctor as she ran off in the direction of the scream.
In the alleyway, the figure marched towards Mr Waynewright's body and placed his hand on his chest. Blue energy syphoned up from the man and through the figure's body. The figure's appearance began to twist and morph until finally, it resembled Mr Waynewright. The Mr Waynewright look-alike picked up the walking stick and exited the alleyway.
The Doctor, Erin and Kyle stopped in the alleyway, where they spotted the body of the elderly man, which now resembled a charred corpse wearing his clothes.
"Oh my god, it's Mr Waynewright!" cried Kyle in horror, "or what's left of him at least."
"Did you know him?" asked the Doctor gravely.
"Not personally," answered Kyle, "I … accidentally kicked a football through his window and he gave me a good whacking over it. What's happened to him anyway?"
"It looks like he was shot with some sort of energy weapon," explained the Doctor in a grim tone of voice, "But then it looks like whoever shot him also caused some form of entropy."
"I'm sorry, but what are you on about?" asked a confused Erin.
"Basically, Mr Waynewright was shot by some kind of weapon that's definitely not made by humans," informed the Doctor gravely, "Then they've done something that's aged him to death. You two need to leave and go home now. Whatever this thing is, it's dangerous."
"No way," protested Kyle, "If there's some nutter out there, we want to help. Besides, we won't be missed."
"Oh, alright then," sighed the Doctor in defeat, "but you two had better do exactly as I say. By the way, I never caught your names."
"I'm Erin Stevenson." answered Erin grumpily.
"And I'm her boyfriend, Kyle Harrison." said Kyle.
"Pleased to meet you both," replied the Doctor, "I'm Joan Smith, but you can call me the Doctor."
"So, the Doctor's like an alias?" asked Erin.
"Yes, you could say that." answered the Doctor.
The Doctor shook hands with the two of them and exited through the opposite end of the alleyway.
"Don't I get a say in what I want to do!" hissed Erin angrily as she and Kyle followed the Doctor.
"I know, and I'm sorry, but it's better than having to put up with them royalists." replied Kyle apologetically.
The couple followed the Doctor.
The Mr Waynewright look-alike was walking through a busy street; filled with more people celebrating. Unbeknownst to him, the Doctor, Erin and Kyle had soon spotted him.
"I don't believe it!" cried Erin in shock, "We just saw Mr Waynewright's body; how can he be here?"
"I don't think that is Mr Waynewright." said the Doctor, scratching her chin thoughtfully.
Kyle suddenly headed over to the elderly man.
"No, Kyle, come back!" called out the Doctor in warning.
But her warnings fell on deaf ears. Kyle came up right behind the Mr Waynewright look-alike and tapped him on the shoulder. The man turned around and glared at Kyle before running off at a surprising speed. Kyle gave chase, pursuing the man through the crowded streets before chasing him into an alleyway. The elderly man then turned and whacked Kyle across the face with his walking stick. Kyle staggered before regaining his composure, he then wrestled the walking stick from the man's hand and whacked him in the stomach. The Mr Waynewright look-alike staggered before his whole body seemed to flicker. Kyle watched in astonishment as the figure of Mr Waynewright disappeared nd was replaced by the armoured figure. The Doctor and Erin entered the alleyway just in time to spot the figure before it disappeared in a blinding blue flash.
"Kyle, are you okay?" asked Erin in concern as she wrapped her arms around her boyfriend.
"Yeah, I'm okay," replied Kyle before turning to face the Doctor, "What was that thing?"
"A Raston Assassin Robot," replied the Doctor darkly, "They're usually sent to other planets to carry out targeted killings by order of the Raston Warrior Robots."
"So, this thing is from outer space," said a stunned Kyle, "Was it sent here to kill Mr Waynewright?"
"No, no, I don't think so," answered the Doctor, "It must've picked this date for a reason though."
"Hang on, today's the day of the Queen's silver jubilee celebrations," stated Erin, "What if it's trying to assassinate the Queen?"
"That's brilliant, Erin," replied the Doctor in realisation, "The Raston Assassin Robot must've gone to London. We need to stop it."
"Hopefully we can get there in time and find that robot," stated Kyle, "Look, I'm not a fan of the Queen, but even she doesn't deserve to die."
"I'm coming too," replied Erin, "but first we need to talk with my parents."
"Ohhh, do we have to?" groaned Kyle.
"Yes," sighed Erin, "Look, they obviously don't get us, but I do need to let them know I'm heading to London."
"Erin's right," said the Doctor as she looked at Kyle, "Besides, I'm sure they can't be that bad, then again, I'm not really an expert on domestics."
The trio soon arrived at Erin's house, which was also decorated with Union Jacks. Erin rang the doorbell and after a few moments, the door opened, revealing Danielle Stevenson. "Erin, where have you been?" she asked in a relieved tone of voice before hugging Erin, "We've been worried sick."
"They've been with me, Mrs Stevenson," answered the Doctor, noting the wedding ring on Danielle's finger, "I'm WDC Joan Smith, I caught these two vandalising a police box."
Danielle finally noticed Kyle and sighed. "Of course you did," she sighed before glaring at Erin sternly while pointing at Kyle, "I suppose HE put you up to this, did he?"
"I didn't put her up to anything." argued Kyle.
"Please, come in." said Danielle to the Doctor before roughly steering her daughter and Kyle inside. The Doctor followed.
In the living room, Danielle's husband Roger was sitting on the sofa and drinking tea. Roger was an obese man with balding grey hair and a grey beard. Roger looked up as Danielle marched in with Erin and Kyle, followed by the Doctor.
"Erin!" cried Roger in relief before spotting Kyle and glaring at him and talking through gritted teeth, "Alright, boy, what sort of trouble have you gotten my daughter into now?"
"Apparently, they were caught vandalising phone boxes." answered Danielle.
"What have I told you about that!" barked Roger at Erin, "If you weren't a grown woman, I'd ground you for a year. And you just had to do this on today of all days."
"If I may," interrupted the Doctor, causing everyone to turn in her direction, "I'm WDC Joan Smith with the CID. I caught your daughter and her boyfriend vandalising two phone boxes and a police telephone box."
"A WDC, are you?" chuckled Roger before seeing the serious look on the Doctor's face, "Seriously? Well … I don't mean to be rude, it's just … erm …"
"Not what you were expecting, dear." suggested Danielle, giving her husband a stern look.
"Exactly," said Roger before turning to Erin and Kyle, "Look, Erin, me and your mother respect the fact that you are an adult who can make her own decisions, but we don't like this punk phase you're going through: punks just don't respect the monarchy or the traditions of this country."
"And you're not helping," said Danielle to Kyle, "Our daughter needs somebody who can be a good influence on her."
"And until you clean up your act, boy, it certainly won't be you." concluded Roger.
"So you'd rather I be like you and worship a bunch of stuck-up prats!" snapped Erin.
"We'd rather you realise who you really are!" argued Danielle, "You can't honestly say you enjoy punk, and as for that new, disrespectful version of God Save the Queen … well, shame on that group."
"Alright!" interrupted the Doctor loudly, "Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to get down to business. I would like to help your daughter by taking her down to London; to try and prove to her that the monarchy isn't so bad."
"That would be wonderful," replied Danielle, "I think you may end up being a good influence on our daughter."
"I agree," replied Roger, "Though I don't approve of the idea of women policemen."
"That's settled then," said the Doctor happily, "I'll also be taking Kyle with me as well. I might be able to straighten him out."
"Good luck with that one." snorted Roger before laughing.
"Roger!" scolded Danielle.
The Doctor, Erin and Kyle then left.
After taking a bus, the trio arrived in London. The streets were packed with people either celebrating the jubilee or jeering and complaining about the monarchy. The Doctor pulled out a small, handheld device.
"What's that for?" asked Erin. as the trio began walking.
"That robot is likely going to kill more people in order to blend in with the crowds," informed the Doctor, "This device will help us to sniff out the robot before it can kill the Queen."
"But that robot could be anywhere." pointed out Kyle.
"Not necessarily," replied the Doctor, "If I remember how the silver jubilee celebrations played out, the robot will have four opportunities to assassinate the Queen. The first opportunity will be at St Paul's Cathedral. The Queen and the rest of the Royal Family will be attending a National service of thanksgiving with other world leaders."
In a hallway of St Paul's Cathedral, Mrs McClain was making sure that everything was in order for the National service of thanksgiving. Mrs McClain was an elderly woman with light-grey hair that was tied into a bun. Suddenly, there was a muffled bang that appeared to be coming from the basement. Mrs McClain walked towards the basement door and opened it. "Who's there?" she called out.
After getting no answer, Mrs McClain slowly made her way down the stairs. Upon reaching the bottom, the woman gasped in shock at the sight of two glowing blue eyes. Mrs McClain's terrified screams filled the basement.
The Doctor, Erin and Kyle had entered St Paul's cathedral through an open window. The trio hid behind a piller and watched as the service began.
"So where's the robot?" whispered Erin.
The Doctor pulled out her scanner device and moved it about; the screen displaying whether somebody was human or not by showing their skeleton. The Doctor moved the device over Mrs McClain and her eyes widened as the scanner showed that she was in fact the robot. The Doctor gestured to Erin and Kyle before pointing to Mrs McClain.
"What do we do?" hissed Kyle.
"That robot clearly can't maintain its disguise for long," informed the Doctor before smirking, "Kyle managed to force it out of its last disguise with a single whack. One of us needs to find a way to disrupt its disguise and force it to flee.
"Leave it to me." whispered Erin.
Erin quickly snuck over to a fruit bowl, grabbed an orange and hurtled it at Mrs McClain. The orange bounced off the back of her head. Mrs McClaine began to flicker before fleeing from the church. Erin, the Doctor and Kyle gave chase, ignoring strange looks from passers-by as they raced down the steps, but by the time they reached the bottom, there was no sign of Mrs McClaine.
"What now?" asked Erin.
"We need to get to Guildhall," answered the Doctor, "The Queen is going to have lunch there with the Lord Mayor of London."
The trio soon arrived at guildhall, where they snuck in through a fire exit, they then entered the area where the lunch would be happening and spotted a man with short, mousy brown hair standing in the middle of the room.
"Who are you?" asked the man in surprise.
"WDC Joan Smith," announced the Doctor, "And you're Mr Pearson, am I right?"
"That's correct," said Mr Pearson, though he didn't sound convincing, "What do you think you're doing here?"
"Investigating a possible threat against her Majesty." answered the Doctor before punching the man in the face, sending him to the floor.
Mr Pearson got to his feet when quite suddenly, his whole form seemed to flicker before transforming into the Raston Assassin Robot.
"Erin, Kyle, when I say run, run," advised the Doctor as she, Erin and Kyle slowly backed away, "RUN!"
The trio instantly bolted out of the room, just as the robot fired a bolt of green light at them. The green light struck a wall.
The Raston Assassin Robot vanished from the room in a flash of blue light.
Outside, the trio suddenly stopped and turned around just in time to see the Raston Assassin Robot rounding the corner and raising its gun. The trio dived into a nearby alleyway just as a green bolt of light when sailing by, the trio kept themselves pressed against the wall, while the robot stomped by before teleporting away.
"That was close." remarked Erin.
The trio stood away from the wall.
"That robot only has two attempts left now," informed the Doctor, "It'll likely try to shoot the Queen while she and the rest of the Royal Family are driving to Buckingham Palace."
"So it could be anywhere." sighed Kyle in frustration.
"Not necessarily," replied the Doctor, "It'll likely find a nice vantage point from a rooftop somewhere down The Mall."
The trio eventually found the rooftop that the robot would use. The Doctor, Erin and Kyle were waiting patiently for the robot.
"So, Kyle, I'm curious, why don't you like the Royal Family?" asked the Doctor curiously.
"Where the heck have you been?" asked Kyle while chuckling, "They get everybody to pay for all their events, they're minds are stuck in the dark ages and they just love all the attention. Plus, they're a bunch of fascists."
"And do you agree with that, Erin?" asked the Doctor.
"I wouldn't hang around with Kyle if I didn't." snarked Erin.
"Well, I'll admit you do have a few points," replied the Doctor, "The royals have and will continue to make mistakes; just wait until Charles gets married for the first time … but in the end, we're all human and are prone to making mistakes. Trust me, I've got a few friends who have views that I strongly disagree with, and I'm only friends with them because I know they'd never act on their views. You also have to remember that the Queen and most of her family grew up in a time when those views were considered acceptable. The royals have done a lot of good."
"What do you think of punks then?" asked Erin.
"As long as you're not hurting anybody you can express yourself however you want," answered the Doctor, "Besides, punks are pretty cool, though I wouldn't be a punk if I wasn't actually into it."
There was a sudden bright flash and a man with short, dark brown hair with grey patches appeared. The man silently walked to the edge of the roof and pulled out a rifle.
"Doctor, look." hissed Erin, pointing at something in the distance.
The Doctor looked to where Erin was pointing and her blood turned to ice. The procession was heading down the street, which was lined with onlookers. Music was being played.
"Lovely day for it!" declared the Doctor, startling the man who quickly turned and glared at her.
The man attempted to turn back to the edge, but the Doctor, Erin and Kyle grabbed his gun and wrestled it from his hands, just as the procession passed by the building. The man yelled in anger and charged at the Doctor, who sidestepped, causing Denis to loose his balance and plummet down the side of the building. The Doctor, Erin and Kyle peered over the edge and saw Denis stagger to his feet before reverting to the form of the Raston Assassin Robot. The robot appeared to be sparking and malfunctioning, but it quickly teleported away.
"That robot looks as though it's on its last legs." commented Erin.
"Yeah, but it'll still be dangerous," pointed out the Doctor, "It'll get its last chance while the Queen is on the balcony at Buckingham Palace."
After getting to the ground floor, the trio exited the building. They began looking for a way to get to Buckingham Palace when suddenly, a sharp voice called out. "Oi, what are you three up to?"
The three turned to see a man wearing the uniform of a DCI glaring at them. He had short, messy black hair that was parted in the middle.
"We were just coming out of the building, Detective," replied the Doctor sheepishly, "Is that a problem?"
"I thought I saw a suspect I was chasing fall from the roof," informed the man, "Did any of you happen to see anything?"
"No, we didn't see a thing," replied the Doctor, while Erin and Kyle shook their heads, "We're actually undercover MI5 agents, here on classified business."
"Really?" said the detective suspiciously before looking at Erin and Kyle, "I swear the agents are getting younger every day."
"Yes, we're rookies," said Erin, "We need to get to Buckingham Palace immediately."
The detective dropped his suspicious look. "Okay, I'll help you," he said, "The name's DCI Blake by the way. I've also been looking into a potential threat against the Queen. The man who I was chasing was known as Denis and was suspected of having ties to the IRA"
"Thank you for the assistance, Blake." thanked the Doctor.
Blake took the trio to his car and dropped them off near Buckingham Palace. The streets were packed with people. The Queen and the rest of the Royal Family stood on the balcony.
"Why didn't you just tell Blake you were a WDC?" questioned Erin as the Doctor pulled out her scanner device.
"Ahhh," replied the Doctor sheepishly, "Well the thing is, I'm not actually a WDC."
"What!" cried Erin and Kyle in surprise.
"My actual name is the Doctor," began the Doctor, "I'm actually part of a near-extinct alien race known as the Time Lords, who came from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous and I travel through time and space in a ship known as the TARDIS, which stands for Time and Relative Dimension In Space."
"Okay." replied Erin, who didn't sound surprised. Kyle remained stoic.
"You two don't seem too surprised." commented the Doctor.
"There's a robot assassin from space attempting to assassinate the Queen," stated Kyle in a matter-of fact tone, "At this point nothing can surprise us."
"Speaking of the robot," piped up the Doctor, "I've found it."
The Doctor pointed to a nearby woman with short, blonde hair with patches of grey in it. However, the woman's form began to flicker, revealing the robot. "Excuse me, I need to get going." she said to another woman before running off, ignoring the other woman, who addressed her as Brenda.
The Doctor, Erin and Kyle chased after 'Brenda', who suddenly turned back into the robot, causing some people to yelp and cry out in shock. The robot eventually arrived at the Thames. The Doctor Erin and Kyle came to stand in front of it. The Raston Assassin Robot raised its arm and attempted to fire, but the gun simply sparked. Smoke began pouring out of the robot, its eyes were now flickering.
"What's wrong with it?" asked Erin.
"That fall must have done some serious internal damage," informed the Doctor, "and all that stomping about and disguising itself won't have helped; its on its last legs."
The robot suddenly unleashed an electronic scream before exploding in a blinding flash of light, leaving nothing but a pile of dust on the ground.
"Raston Robot protocol," lamented the Doctor, "Once a robot has failed its mission it activates a self-destruct sequence that reduces it to nothing, as if it never existed."
"That's horrible." muttered Erin.
"Let's go." said the Doctor quietly.
The Doctor, Erin and Kyle took a bus back to East Grinstead, where they returned to Erin's house. Erin shared a hug with Danielle and Roger.
"So, how was it?" asked Danielle.
"You know what, I actually don't mind the royals so much," said Erin, much to her parents shock, "I think during this trip I've realised that the only reason I got into punk was because I grew tired of always feeling like you wanted me to lead the life that you wanted me to lead, notthe one I want."
"Erin sweetheart, we never wanted you to do anything you didn't feel comfortable with," assured Roger, "We're sorry we ever made you feel that way."
The three then shared a big hug. After parting from the hug, Erin smiled. "You know, I think I will attend that street party after all."
"Are you sure?" asked a surprised Danielle.
"I'm sure," replied Erin before turning to the Doctor and Kyle, "You're both invited to join us, but Kyle, I think we might want to wear something that won't raise eyebrows."
Kyle simply nodded and chuckled.
And so, the Doctor, Erin, Kyle, Danielle and Roger attended the street party; Erin and Kyle even joining in on the original version of God Save the Queen. The two had changed out of their punk atire and were now wearing more appropriate clothing; though Kyle was reluctant. A bit later, the Doctor, Erin and Kyle were sitting at a table.
"You two were a big help today," stated the Doctor proudly, "You may not completely like the Queen, but you pushed through your beliefs to do the right thing."
"Thanks, Doctor." said Erin and Kyle in unison.
"I want to offer you th chance to come and travel with me," said the Doctor, "Come with me and you'll see places and creatures beyond your wildest dreams, and you can still get home for supper."
"Will it be as dangerous as what we just went through?" asked Erin.
"Yes," answered the Doctor, "My life is never simple or completley safe. I explore the universe for fun, but somehow trouble always finds me, and I help wherever I can."
"It's a no from me, Doctor," replied Erin, "Seeing other places sounds fun, but what we went through today was just too scary."
"Same for me." said Kyle.
"I understand." replied the Doctor.
The Doctor got to her feet and walked away.
Kyle turned to face his girlfriend. "I think you should go, Erin." he said.
"What, why?" asked Erin in shock.
"You have your whole life ahead of you," said Kyle sadly, "It's time that you broke free from your parents, forge your own identity. Punk was clearly never your thing, but maybe this will."
"Why won't you come too?" asked a heartbroken Erin.
"What I just went through was too scary for me, and I couldn't go through that every single day," informed Kyle, "That's just not who I am, but that's who you are, Erin Stevenson, I see it in you every day: the adrenaline; the fun … go out there."
Erin gave Kyle a sad smile. The couple shared a big kiss. Erin then got up and ran off.
The Doctor had arrived back at the TARDIS and was just unlocking the door when suddenly, a voice called out. "Doctor." the voice said.
The Doctor turned to see Erin standing there.
"Take me somewhere unimaginable." said Erin.
"Well, let's start right now, shall we." smirked the Doctor before opening the TARDIS door.
Erin stepped inside. The lights in the console room turned on and Erin's eyes widened in astonishment at the large, futuristic looking room seemingly contained within a small police box.
"I-it's smaller on the outside." said an astonished Erin, just as the Doctor entered and closed the doors.
"Well, that's a first," said the Doctor as she walked up to the console, "Most people comment on how its bigger inside. The interior and exterior are different dimensions."
The Doctor turned to face a slightly confused Erin. "You'll get used to it," she assured her, "So, Erin Stevenson: past or future? Earth or Space … or something else; it's your choice."
Erin opened her mouth to speak.
