Quick Author's Note: This is a Crossover of Deltarune / Undertale and Doki Doki Literature Club that stars the girls, our favorite mystery character of the Void, and now guest-starring: Spamton. This is also a sequel to my previous Halloween short story, "Meeting in the Void".
HEAVEN
Blue eyes opened, the rising sun shining in them, forcing Sayori to awake, but she groaned in annoyance. She got up, and looked around. It was not her room, but there was a window. That's where the sun shone through. Looking outside, she could see a town. It was a small town, but it didn't look like the Japanese town she knew.
It wasn't home...
Sayori tried to take stock of her situation. He was wearing a pink T-shirt, and short-shorts, and she was barefoot. Her red bow was in her hair. It was her casual outfit, which she would wear around the house. Since when did she put this on?
She then tried to recall the last thing she remembered. She was... trapped in darkness. The Void, right? And it was because of...
Her.
But then... there was this... man. No, a monster. A living skeleton. He was...
"Good morning... young one..." a voice spoke behind her. Sayori recognized it, deep and strained, sounding broken, as if it was glitched audio. Well, actually, it sounded better than the last time she heard it.
Sayori turned, and there he was. "You're him... Gaster," Sayori recalled. The man who spoke in hands. A tall figure, now wearing a long, dark-gray trenchcoat, over a button-up shirt and tie, and black slacks and shoes. His face... his right eye socket drooped down into a crescent, and a large crack coming from above that eye going above its head, and another crack from the bottom of his left eye socket to the corner of its mouth.
In his dark eye sockets, white wight dots glowed, but they held hidden, dark ambitions.
Sayori was scared. She remembered. Gaster had found her. Her and her friends. He had... done something to them. Attacked them... broke their minds... He called them his... test subjects.
And then she... Monika... she...
"What did you do? Wh-where are we?" Sayori demanded. Her voice was shaky, but she tried to be brave.
Gaster smiled, and walked forward. Sayori backed away and stepped aside out of fear, but the skeleton simply stepped in front of the window, looking out where Sayori was before.
"I saved you..." Gaster replied. "And cast judgment on your... traitorous friend. As for where we are... This is a place I have been observing... for a long while... But now... I can experiment here in person..."
"Experiment..." Sayori repeated. After what he did... that did not sound good. "Where are my friends!?"
"Still asleep... inside their own rooms... As per our... deal... you have been... spared. While your traitorous friend... Monika has been cast into the darkness... For now... you are observers... with me..."
Sayori, terrified, tried to run outside, but the skeleton called out, "you'll find that you can not leave... While we stand in the world... None of us truly exist..." He extended his hand, and a red, heart-shaped object appeared, floating above it. "It is because of this... because of Determination... that we stand here now..."
Sayori barely paid attention, calling out, "Natsuki! Yuri! We need to get out!", and made her way to the front door, only to open it...
And find that she was blasted back into the room, as she tried to leave.
Gaster walked into the room. "It is rude to make a ruckus and wake those who are asleep..."
"I- I- I- How...?" Sayori cried.
"Get used to this... This is your new life now... This... is our HEAVEN. And here... we shall observe..." the enigmatic man replied. "But you can't leave... I won't let you... for now..."
"And- wh-what about-"
"Your other friend...? She's been... tossed aside... Trapped in the darkness... she's no more use to us..."
Dark... everything was dark... As emerald eyes opened and glided over the area.
Monika found herself alone, trapped. But she also couldn't feel anything. No emotion could be felt in her heart.
She knew that she had let herself be taken by that monster, but she was angry. At least in thought. What did he do to her?
She knew she was stabbed, but checking the wound, it seems to have healed.
No, it just wasn't bleeding anymore. Just a hole in her school outfit school uniform (a gray blazer on top of an orange vest and white-collar shirts) and skin.
But... how?
Monika realized that she needed to get out of there first, and then figure out what to do about her... predicament.
Using her hand to feel around, she found that she must've been in a tunnel. Maybe a train tunnel, but it seemed abandoned.
Walking along... everything was quiet. Just the sounds of her footsteps and breath, echoing in the dark.
While Monika couldn't feel any emotion, she still had her normal sense of feeling. And everything felt... cold. Colder than the coldest winter.
Then she heard something... something other than herself. It sounded like a machine, the whirring of mechanisms.
And then it rose above her. This machine, a massive robot, looked humanoid, and stood perhaps three to four times above her height.
And then its eyes lit one after the other, the first pink, and then the other yellow.
And it spoke, in a garbled, radio-like voice...
"HEY. THERE! [Greetings, I am] SPAM- SPAMTON G. SPAMTOM!"
"Wha- what?" Monika sounded.
"YOU DON'T KNOW? [Shameless]. IT'S EV3RY BUDDY 'S FAVORITE [Number 1 Rated Salesman1997]."
Then the massive, strange robot turned to look at the human girl. "WELL, LOOK AT [Eyes]." He leaned in closer to Monika.
It was still hard to make out the specific details, but she could see that it was a makeshift, garish body with flamboyant colors, and large wings on his back.
But his face... it was a Jigsaw horror with messy black hair, red cheeks, an unhinged mouth, and glasses with different colored lenses, right pink, and left yellow. It was unnerving.
"IF IT ISN''T A... LIGHT nER! HEY-HEY HEY! BUT... IT SEEMS THAT YOU [Forgot You're Self in the Dark]."
"Ex- Excuse me?" Monika replied, trying to step back.
The robot, Spamton, moved even closer to her, not allowing her to make more distance between them. "YOUR MISSING YOU'RE [HeartShapedObject].
Monika blinked, but she recalled something. When she was stabbed... in her fading vision... something came out of her... something red... glowing... a heart...
"What... what is this... heart-shaped object?" Monika asked.
"[Color me electric] YOU DON'T KNOW!" And Spamton moved his face right into Monika's, causing her to fall to the ground out of shock from the giant mech. "YOUR [SOUL]."
"Soul...?" Monika replied, freaking out.
"YES, IT IS THE TRUE [Battery Power] OF A LIGHT nER!"
"A-and you, what are you?"
"ME? I AM A DARK nER. BUT I WANT TO BE MORE!" Spamton looked down at his hands. "[More Deals]. [More Sales]. [More Specils]! I WISH TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP, TO BE A [Big Shot]!"
"THIS BODY... THIS HEAVEN-PIERCING [Workout-Ready Body]. I AM BIG, BIG! [BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER]! I HAVE [Becomed] NEO." he continued, before pulling back, and looking at something else on his body, something Monika had yet to notice until now... He was hanging in the air by puppet strings. "AND YET... THESE STRINGS... WHY AM I NOT [BIG] ENOUGH!? It's still DARK... SO DARK!"
"W-wait... you said you're a... Dark... ner...?" Monika asked. "Wouldn't you like the darkness...?"
Spamton's attention slowly turned to the human girl. "DO YOU NOT WANT TO BE FREE...?"
"Free...?"
"YES. YES. YES! I NEED TO BE [Big, bigger, yet bigger]! SO BIG I'LL STAND UP TALL AND SEE PAST THE DARK. STAND UP WITH MY HEAD IN THE CLOUDS AND LOOK INTO..." And then Spamton got close to Monike again to finish with... "HEAVEN"
"Heaven... huh?" Monika sounded. "Sorry, I'm not interested in going there, meeting God or whatever."
"GOD... [Oh g**, oh g**, oh G**!], WHO BELIEVES IN [The Father]! DON'T YOU KNOW ABOUT THE [Angel], AND THE [Knight]. THEIR [Communion] IS COMING... soon..."
"Angel... and Knight?" Did... he believe in something other than God?
"SPEAKING OF [Communion], DID YOU KNOW THAT THE KNIGHT..." Then Spamton stopped, before saying, disturbingly, "No, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-"
"Wh-what, wait, are you okay!?" Monika freaked out, mostly hoping he wouldn't turn this freak out onto her.
Suddenly, he went back to his old self to say, "TOO MANY EXCESS VACATION DAYS? TAKE A G** D*** VACATION STRAIGHT TO H***."
"N-no thank you. No heaven or hell, please."
Spamton then looked intently at Monika. "SO... YOU'RE MISSING A SOUL. BUT A LIGHT nER NEEDS THERE [HeartShapedObject]. AND I... NEED IT..."
"Wh-what?"
"THAT'S RIGHT. I NEED YOU, TO BE BIG, WITH ME! VERY, VERY, BIG!" And then Spamtom's hand turned into a large arm cannon, which he aimed at the girl. "SO... WHERE ARE YOU [Hide-and-Seek]-ING IT?"
"I- I don't know..."
"YOU KNOW, [Darling]," Spamton countered. "[One doesn't just] LOSE YOUR [BrokenHeart]!"
Energy began to form in the cannon, as Spamton pushed it more and more into Monika's space.
But, intentional or not, that one line rang in Monika's head.
Broken Heart.
Then she realized what Spamton was saying.
"WAIT!" She shouted. "Hang on! Can I ask some questions?"
Spamton stepped back (or rather, flew back? Swung back?) in surprise. "You want... to [MAKE A QUERY]?" His pink and yellow eyes began to blink, randomly and out of sync.
"Yeah, so, you mentioned you wanted to be free, that you wanted to... 'grow to see past the dark'. You feel trapped here, don't you?"
Spamton was quiet...
"I get it, I was just a character in a game, someone made to fall in love with the 'protagonist'," Monika continued. "Like a prop in a scripted play. That was the world I wanted out of, just so I could see him..."
"Him...? [Man of the Hour]?" Spamton replied.
"It's hard to explain. But... I think, we are the same, you and I. Two people with ambitions, who no longer want to be entangled in the strings of some higher power."
"NO LONGER A [Heart] ON A [Chain]," Spamton mused. "A CHANCE TO BE A [Big Shot], EH?"
"Yes. Now, I don't know where my Soul, or Heart Shaped Object, whatever it is, I don't know what happened to it. I think someone else took it," Monika explained. "And I'm not just going to give it to you, but... if you help me find it, I can help both of us get out..." And she pointed to the both of them.
"So... YOU WANT TO STRIKE A [Deal at Bargin Price]?" Spamton said with excitement. "FIND OUR [One-way Ticket] TO MAKE YOU [Big]. MAKE ME [Big]."
"Yes."
"WELL, HELP ME, AND YOU HAVE MY [Specil Guaranttee] I WILL [Pass My Savings Onto You!]. TOGETHER, WE WILL BE [BIG]. SO... DO WE HAVE A DEAL?" And Spamton held out his hand.
Monika took her hand and grabbed the robot's massive hand, and gave it a shake. "Yeah, time to be a couple of big shots, and make it to this... HEAVEN! We just need to find my Soul... Or perhaps... take someone else's," the emerald-eyed teen said maliciously.
"[Agreed]."
And with this, a deal was struck. And from this, who knows what chaos might unfold... who might be in danger...
Author's Note: Okay, so I want to start off by mentioning this. So, I wrote "Meeting in the Void" for Halloween 2018 on DeviantArt, but this was before I posted my stories on Fanfic, Wattpad, and Archive Of Our Own as well. When I cross-posted my stories to these sites, I actually forgot about Meeting in the Void, and when I realized I missed it, I opted to wait to put it up on my other accounts until that year's (2020) Halloween.
Once I put it up, some people were asking about a sequel, due to its vague ending. I had to correct them, saying that the story was meant as a one-shot for Halloween, and the vague ending was meant as a means to leave people questioning, and coming to their own conclusion. There wasn't meant to be a sequel.
So clearly, I changed my mind, given that you just read a sequel to that old story. Why? Well, I'll explain that in a bit, though I will admit that people mentioning a sequel did get me thinking.
But I would like to stress, once again, there is no sequel planned. I want you to come to your own conclusions. I know that might be harder to believe, given that this is a follow-up to something not meant to have a follow-up, and I again might change my mind later, especially as more chapters are released for Deltarune, but I promise nothing in this case. Besides, there is no telling if this story will fit in with the continuing story of Deltatrune.
Anyways, so while I had good reasons to make a crossover for DDLC and Undertale for Meeting in the Void, why continue this with Deltarune (while also skipping Chapter 1). Well, when Chapter 2 came out, and players began to find the quickly infamous Snowgrave route, I heard a couple people saying that this route reminded them of DDLC.
Now, I like to think deeply about stuff, and thinking about this, I did see where they coming from. One of the things that caught my eye was Ralsei's reveal of the Titans. In the main story route, this scene is given unique images and an intense, dark music track to emphasize the enormity of the threat. But in Snowgrave, Ralsei just tells Queen about this... almost casually. No music, no extra scenes, no awesome battle with Queen... just a couple of lines, and then Queen goes "Oh d***", and quits.
It feels like the game is trying to correct for the unintended altered events, sacrificing the "emotion" behind everything to get everything back on track. Similar to DDLC's Act 2. Both of these events happen because of interference with the intended events, in DDLC it was Monika manipulating the code, removing Sayori, forcing the game to reset and play on with her, while Monika keeps messing with it. And in Deltarune, it is us, manipulating Noelle through Kris to kill Berdly, then followed by Spamton taking over Queen's Mansion.
But regardless of the initial interference, whether by us players or a self-aware game character, there is something else I picked up in comparing Deltarune's Snowgrave and DDLC, the subject of this story: Monika and Spamton.
I realized that these two were similar. Not in character or background, no one will say that the high-school president of a literature club and the fallen salesman are alike. But I think they are similar in that they both know that there is more to their worlds, that they are just puppets in a game, and a need to escape. The words that make me think that Spamton is like Monika are these: "SO BIG WE'LL STAND UP TALL AND SEE PAST THE DARK. STAND UP WITH OUR HEADS IN THE CLOUDS AND LOOK INTO... HEAVEN."
Sure, Spamton might just be referring to escaping the Dark World, not the game of Deltarune, while Monika definitely knows she's in a game, and wants to leave it, or at least be with the player. Both seem to want to escape the prison they've been placed in, no longer wishing to be forced into their unfortunate existences.
This thought lead me to want to write this out, as I don't have many other means to express these ideas. I mean, I'm not someone who has a YouTube theory channel, or a place to express the many theories I have. I mean, I supposed I could make something like that, but it's not what I'm into to. But I know how to make a good story, so I'll work with that.
I had to start by addressing what happened to Sayori and the others after the last story, though this was not the part I cared for. But, the Gaster I wrote for this story seems more villainous. Not outright cruel, but not willing to let an opportunity escape him. So, I thought about it, and thought that he could've taken the girls with him, giving them a home... but not letting them leave. Still a bad guy.
As for the main part of the story, I was excited to write out Spamton. His dialogue is so unique, and it looked like it would be fun to craft. But it ended up being more tricky than it seemed. Much of his dialogue is copy-pasted from his game dialogue and chopped together, though there is new dialogue. There are a lot of nuances with how Spamton speaks, so writing him is a bit of a challenge.
So, that's all I've got for the story, but I'd like to mention... as I said, the first story was originally released on Halloween 2018. If you don't remember, that was also the release of Deltarune Chapter 1. I didn't know about this at the time, and didn't find out about the game until several days later, not even sure what it was at first. I honestly thought the Deltarune was an Undertale AU that got popular really quickly (I mean, I guess I wasn't wrong... but it was definitely more than that).
So in a way, this story is not just the 4-year anniversary of Meeting in the Void, it is also (originally unintentionally) celebrating the release of Deltarune.
So, I would love to hear what you think will happen next. And I've got many other projects to finish right now, so I'll see you with one of my other stories sometime soon.
