Everything about the wedding is beautiful; the function hall, the decorations, the bridesmaids in their flowing dresses, all beautiful. And, most of all, the couple exchanging vows in front of him on the stage is beautiful.
Between the hair done up neatly in an elaborate updo that frames her face perfectly, the lace-trimmed dress flows gently over her slim figure and stops just short of the ground, and the brilliant smile, Sarah looks like she could have stepped straight off the cover of a bridal magazine.
And Iceman… Maverick barely has words for how good Ice looks, dress whites tailored and ironed and impeccably straightened, hair gelled back into a more subdued version of its regular style. Maverick can't see Iceman's face from where he's standing, behind him as Ice's best man, and it's probably for the best.
Maverick has seen the way Ice looks when he smiles genuinely, the way his eyes light up and his face seems to lose years off of his age.
If Maverick had to see that right now, his heart might actually break in the literal sense instead of just the sense that has him already planning which bar he's going to drown his sorrows in once the newlywed Kazanskys have left for their honeymoon.
It hurts less if he doesn't think about it, if he instead focuses on what the officiant is saying as if he expects to be tested on it later. Thinks about doing his duties as best man as well as they can possibly be done, because Iceman is his best friend, and Maverick wants Iceman's wedding to be perfect, even if said wedding is to someone who isn't Maverick.
And if there's a tear in Maverick's eye when the new couple kiss, well, plenty of people cry at weddings.
