"See ya later suga!" Babette called, as she entered Luke's diner.
"Who was that?" Luke asked, intrigued by the beautiful stranger Babette had been talking with outside the resturaunt.
Babette sat down at the counter. "That's Lorelai Gilmore! She just moved in next door to me. Sweet girl but she may need to lay off the caffine a bit."
Lorelai Gilmore. Even her name stood out. Luke had been captivated watching her talk to Babette out on the sidewalk, like she had some sort of hold over him, her big blue eyes absolutely intoxicating.
Luke ran a rag over the counter next to Babette, even though he had just done it prior to her coming in. "Lorelai eh? She from Califorina or something?"
"Nope, from right here in Conneticuit. She's actually worked at the Independence Inn for a while, they just don't get out into town much."
"They? As in her and her husband?" Luke's stomach dropped, dissapointment filling him. He hated himself for feeling this way. Why did he care that some random stranger that had just happened by his shop was married?
"She's not married! I don't know how, a catch like that, she must know some very stupid men! I meant they, her and her daughter. She's 11 years old, big, blue bambi eyes just like her mother, always walking around with her nose in a book."
11? Luke was puzzled, the woman looked no older than 20 herself. ". "Her daughter's 11 years old? Are you sure?"
"You sure want to know a lot about her, you want me to give her your number?" Babette said, giving him a mischeivious smile.
Luke instantly tensed up. "I. . uh. . no it's just nothing changes in this shoebox of a town. . . I was just curious."
"You should come to her Halloween Party tonight."
Luke rolled his eyes. "I don't do parties. Or Halloween, Besides I wasn't invited."
'
"The whole town was invited! She posted a flyer at Doose's a few weeks back. Didn't ya see?"
"I can't go into Doose's until the pumpkin sale is over. If I hear Taylor say "Oh My Gourd" one more time, I'm going to make his face look like a Jackolantern."
Babette laughed. "It starts at eight. You have to wear a costume."
Luke glanced at her, with a deadpan expression. Babette had known him for years. She knew he didn't do holidays, or costumes. She was present for the great Turkey pin freakout of 1994, when Taylor had pinned a wooden "gobble till you wobble" turkey pin on Luke's apron and Luke had thrown him out of the diner. "Do you want my leftover bagels for Cinnamon or not?"
"Ooh do you have any Everything ones left? Those are her favorites."
He handed her a bag. "I made 2 extra just for her."
She smiled while taking the bag. "Thanks Luke. I really should get going, I left Moorey in the music store looking at the Pink Floyd poster. If he stares at it too long he's going to start having flashbacks again."
Luke nodded, curious, but not curious enough to ask and open that can of worms.
Babette walked to the door, pausing as she opened it. "Remember Luke, it starts at eight."
He rolled his eyes. "Goodbye Babette."
…
This was stupid. Halloween was stupid. Parties were stupid. Costumes were stupid. Luke was clearly stupid. Here he stood, in front of Lorelai Gilmore's house, in a costume. Sure the costume was haistly thrown together, a black hooded cape he had found in the Diner's lost and found, his face partially eclipsed by a mask Liz had sent him from her new hobby of the week, the Renninisance Fair circut, but it was still a costume. The wooden mask , carved to look like a wolf, and painted black, had been chucked in a box, Luke unsure of what to do with it, every since he'd opened the package. He had completed the look with a black dress shirt and slacks, hoping that they were so far removed from his daily outfit of denim and flannel that no one would realize it was him. He just needed to be near her. There was some magnetic pull, some tether, pulling him, dragging him to her. So here he was, standing next to a dinged up mailbox with Gilmore haistly painted on the side of it, dressed up like a third grader trick or treating. It was already ten p.m. and from the looks of the cars, the whole town was inside. He'd walked up the porch steps three times already, just to turn around and come back down. What was he doing? He thought about leaving once more, only for the thought to be replaced with the thought of her again. He swallowed his pride and marched up the stairs and straight to the door. He lifted his hand to knock when the door swung open, and he was face to face with Lorelai. "AAAAAHHHH!" She screeched, clutching her chest.
"I. . I. . ." Luke stammered, too enamored by her bright blue eyes to form a cohesive sentance. She was in a red shiny fitted dress, the material was clingy, highlighting wild curves that her puffy blue coat from the other day did not. Two tiny red horns attatched to a headband were perched atop her head. Tall black boots completed her outfit.
A smile spread across her face. "Didn't think you could scare the devil did ya!?"
Luke chuckled lightly.
Lorelai stepped out onto the porch, unfazed by the cool late October air on her bare shoulders. "Ah! Much better! It's like a million degrees in there! True I think the whole town is in there, you guys really go all out on hollidays don't you? I can't wait to see what Christmas is like! I mean the town selectman is in there dressed as a hippie ,singing Monster Mash kareoke with the dance instructor who is dressed up like Marilyn Monroe! I love this kooky little town! "
"Where are you from originally?" Luke asked. Suddnely hit with the need to know everything about her.
Lorelai glanced out into the yard. "Oh, not far. I grew up over in Hartford."
"You left Hartford for Stars Hollow? What was so wrong with Hartford?"
"My parents live there." She said, chuckling softly.
Luke nodded in agreement, even though he had had a wonderful relationship with both his parents, and didn't really understand packing up your kid and hauling over to Stars Hollow from a big city. "They're that great huh?"
"They're a real class act. My mother fires every maid she has. . . . my father works all the time, mostly to avoid my mother. . . and I. . ."She shivered, the cool October air finally catching up to her.
Luke whipped off his cape in one fluid motion, wrapping it around her bare arms. He surprised even himself, the move more of some suave, debonair romance novel hero action that he could never repeat.
Lorelai looked up at him, her big blue eyes drawing Luke deeper and deeper with every passing moment.
"I'm sorry, I haven't taken a single breath." she offered out her hand. "I'm Lorelai. Lorelai Gilmore."
He shook her hand, sending electricity coursing through his veins as he touched her smooth skin. "I know."
She smiled, a little taken aback by his comment. "You know? Do I already have a reputation in this town?"
He let out a small chuckle. "No. . . I uh. . .ran into you the other day."
His comment piqued Lorelai's interest. Between the dim lighting and the wolf mask, his face was almost completly obscured. He could be anybody. "Oh so I know you?"
He shrugged. "I'm kind of forgettable."
She started to walk closer to him, to get a better look at him. She tripped over a knot in the wood of her porch. She fellhead first, crashing into the mysterious stranger's chest. Luke's heart beat wildly in his chest, his lungs screaming for air as he held his breath. She made him feel some sort of way that Luke Danes didn't feel.
Lorelai looked up at him. "Somehow I think i'm going to have a very hard time forgetting you."
Luke couldn't help but to stare at her lips. They looked so soft, they would match up perfectly to his. He wondered what it would be like to kiss her. He leaned in slowly, but not slow enough that his brain could catch up to his actions and stop him. He was doing all kinds of things that he didn't usually do tonight, so why not do something he really wanted and kiss her? He *really* wanted to kiss her. Lorelai's lips started to part slowly, her chest rising and falling rapidly, as she brought her lips toward his.
A loud crash happened inside, making Lorelai jump back. The front door opened once again, and a small girl, in a witch hat and black dress stepped out. One look at her vivid blue eyes and Luke just knew she had to be Lorelai's daughter. The girl walked out a little farther. "Mom? Mom! That Kirk guy thinks he's turning into a vampire again."
Lorelai bit her lip, grimacing slightly. "I. . . uh. . . I better go help her. Stay here, i'll be right back."
Luke nodded, but as soon as the door closed behind her, he hight tailed it off the porch, practically jogging back to his small apartment diner, before she could even mention him to anyone inside.
….
"And I went outside and he was just. . . gone. I'm telling you I would think he was just a figment of my imagination if he hadn't left his cape." Lorelai said animatedly as she and Rory walked across the town square. It was the day after her Halloween party, and she was still reeling from her encounter with the mysterious stranger on the front porch.
Rory peered up at her mom. "Wow, it's just like a modern day Cinderella story. I love Stars Hollow."
"Here we are." Lorelai said, stopping in front of a building.
Rory scrunched up her eyebrows reading the building. "Williams Hardware. We're eating breakfast at a hardware store?"
Lorelai shook her head, gesturing to a small sign shaped like a coffee cup. "Luke's diner. You know I can't go into hardware stores since I left you in that bucket that one time."
the smell of strong coffee and maple syrup hitting them as they stepped inside. They took a seat at the counter. "Smells good. That's a good sign." Lorelai murmured as she opened a menu.
Hearing her voice Luke instantly turned around. "H. . h. . hi." he stammered.
Lorelai sat the menu down. She smiled at Luke. "My neighbor said that you have the best cup of coffee , so we're here to judge that." She offered out her hand. "Hi, I'm Lorelai gilmore."
"See ya later suga!" Babette called, as she entered Luke's diner.
