It is prom night.

One of the most magical nights for a young teen girl. Will it be the night? Sakura wasn't sure. Giddiness swelled within her and flushed her cheeks a soft pink that was amplified by the rose blush she delicately applied. In her own opinion, she wasn't sure that she'd ever look better than how she did right now.

Her shoulder length pink hair was curled delicately and half of it pinned behind her right ear with a red rose clip that matched her lipstick. The longest curl just barely caressed her shoulder where her scarlet red dress rested. In true halter type style of the early 2000's, naturally. The dress hugged her in all the right places - brought the eyes to her hips where the fabric bunched up just slightly and eased into small slits on both sides. The dress was long and went past her heels to lightly kiss the floor.

She felt pretty.

However, through all of her confidence and giddiness laid an ever growing nervousness. Sakura was anxious. Would Sasuke think she was pretty too? Would she embarrass him? Oh no, what if she trips-

"Stop it Sakura. You will be fine," she berates herself. Giving herself one last look in the mirror, she gives a nod to her reflection and leaves her baby pink room.

"Wow, you look beautiful, dear," her mother cooes. Sakura looks away bashfully as her mom embraces her and gives a kiss to her cheek. Her emerald eyes travel to look over to her father who was wiping at his eyes from behind his camera.

"My little baby, all grown up," he moans and Sakura shakes her head before making her way over to him. She lets him give her a tight hug for all of a minute before pulling away.

"Dad! My dress," she laughs and he does let her go. But not without lightly patting her head. It only brings a smile to her face and she looks around the room - her eyes settling on the door. Any minute now and he would be here.

The boy of her dreams.

She has had a crush on Sasuke since they were six. He had given her a pencil when she forgot hers and since that day, Sakura has never been the same. He hadn't given her much of his attention though until high school, much to her disappointment. Unless Naruto was around.

At the mention of the blond, she shakes her head. He has been her neighbor all her life. They actually share a backyard which is neat. Memories of them playing back there and dancing in the rain caused a smile to light up her face. It made having someone to play with all the easier - except when Sasuke was around. Sakura always knew when he was over there when they were younger because Naruto wouldn't be outside. He'd be forced to sit in the living room with Sasuke and his parents.

Sakura could remember the frustration the blond would scream out when he couldn't play because the "adults wanted to talk and Sasuke isn't allowed blah blah blah."

Eventually, they did grow out of that though. They became a threesome, but Sasuke still didn't really talk to her. Honestly, Sakura was surprised when he suddenly became interested in her after summer vacation - the last one before high school. At this point, their four year anniversary was coming up.

With all of her thoughts, Sakura hadn't noticed that the time was ticking by. A couple minutes turns into many minutes and then those into an hour or another hour.

"Sakura, dear, have you heard from him? Surely he texted? Prom started two hours ago," her mother approaches her with a glass of water.

"No, nothing," Sakura says quietly as she sips the offered water and checks her phone. She had some messages from Ino and Naruto, but none from Sasuke. Quietly, she dials his number.

It went straight to voicemail.

"That's weird.. I'm going to try again."

She tries three times and it's on the fourth try that the call is answered.

"Sasuke-"

"Stop calling him, he's busy," a shrill voice comes through the phone. In the background, Sakura thought she could hear the groaning of another and squeaking of a bed. A million thoughts race through her head but only one possible answer could be what she was hearing when the voice that answered the phone let out a, "Ohh, Sasuke~ Right there-"

Thud.

Sakura's phone hit the floor.

Disbelief was on her face and her mother came to her in a hurry.

"Sakura, dear, what's wrong?" Her mother is all over her and she can't handle it in this moment.

"I'm sorry mom, I need some air," she croaks out and hurriedly walks to the backdoor. She kicks her shoes off before stepping outside when her heel catches on her dress one too many times. She sits on the stairs, her knees pulled up to her chest, and her face buried in her hands.

She couldn't stop crying.

Tonight was supposed to be magical - not whatever the fuck is going on right now. It was late at this point and Sakura could feel her mom's eyes on her from the back door. The worry radiated off of her but she appreciated her mom giving her space.

"I won't bother you, but when you're ready to talk, let me know okay?" Sakura's mom gives her a kiss on top of her head and lays her phone next to her on the porch. She doesn't let out another cry or breath until Sakura is sure her mom is back inside and the light from inside turns off.

Through bleary eyes, she checks her phone notifications. She didn't even have the energy to respond to anyone. Sighing, she wipes at her eyes and groans when she sees the makeup on her fingers. She supposed it didn't matter anymore, though.

Riiingg. Riiinggggg.

Sasuke's caller ID filled her screen. She almost didn't want to answer it but for some reason she did.

"Hello?"

"We should break up. We're graduating and we shouldn't tie one another down while off in college-"

"Is it so you can fuck other girls without feeling guilty? Like the one from earlier?" Sakura grits out. "You didn't even give me a call to give me some shitty excuse as to why you couldn't pick me up for prom." She could feel the tears starting up again, but she pushed it down.

"Prom? Shit, I forgot that was tonight-"

"You forgot?" Sakura couldn't believe it. "That's it. You're right, we shouldn't hold one another down. It's clear that we just don't matter enough to one another. Bye." And she hung up.

She isn't sure how much time passes after the call nor how long she stared at the tree in the middle of the yard, but it must have been awhile because an orange suit filled her vision.

"Sakura? You okay?" A voice asks - gentle and caring as ever. Sakura looks up at him and applauds him for not taking a step back given how messed up her makeup probably is.

"I'll be okay, if that's what you mean," she laughs bitterly.

"What happened? We missed you at prom," Naruto says quietly as he sits next to her - forcing her to scoot over. Sakura doesn't bother moving her dress when he sits on part of it.

"Sasuke was so busy cheating on me and planning our break up that he forgot today was prom," Sakura summarizes. She doesn't look at him, just slumps forwards slightly. She couldn't help but feel defeated.

"That bastard.."

"It's fine - I guess it's better now than later."

"It's prom night though. Tonight should have been fun! Not with you crying in your prom dress in your backyard," Naruto was upset. "You didn't even get to dance. You should have called one of us. We would have picked you up," he sets a comforting arm around her shoulder and she doesn't have the energy to fight against the warm hug.

"I didn't want to ruin everyone's night."

"Our night was ruined without you, Sakura." He pauses her and Sakura looks over at him. She admires the way the stars light up in his blue eyes. They always shone so bright and with so much love and determination. "You make my night. Every night, every day. It's always you."

"That's very sweet Naruto but you don't have to say that to make me feel better." She smiles softly and goes to look away. Soon though, Naruto is standing up in front of her. "What are you doing?" She laughs quietly when he stretches out a hand to her.

"Come on, dance with me."

"What?"

"Dance with me - the night isn't over yet," he gives her a wide grin. When has she ever been able to say no to him? Shaking her head, she accepts his hand and him pulling her into him with a laugh.

They dance together, joke, and laugh. Sasuke is almost forgotten. Naruto has always been pretty good about making her feel better and that didn't change when it started to pour rain and soak her dress. They laughed and danced through it.

Perhaps it wasn't the night. It was still a pretty good night and Sakura would even say that it was the start of very many similar nights.

Like the night six years from then.

All of their friends and family gathered in their shared backyard to celebrate the night of Sakura's life. The night that she said "I do" to her best friend. The night that they danced the night away in their backyard like they did as children and prom night.

The night that it all finally made sense.

For all that he shone like the sun - he made up her sky and all of the stars.
