Classes had ended for the day at Rakeun High School. Hibino Hareluya, Makoto Ichijou and Yamana Michiru were on their way home. The streets were filled with a light mist that swirled around them as they walked.

Hibino yawned. "Ah that was a nice nap."

"A nap? You slept through the entire class" Ichijou said.

"You know Hibino if you keep this up, you're never going to graduate" Michiru said with an amused smile.

"Meh, Ore-sama will be fine" Hibino replied. "Hey, when did this mist get so thick?"

All three of them stopped walking as they realized Hibino was right. What had previously been a thin mist was now a fog so dense that they couldn't see through it. Visibility was practically zero.

Michiru raised a hand. "Listen" she said.

Hibino and Ichijou did so. "Ore-sama can't hear anything."

"Exactly. There's no traffic, no people talking."

They all looked at each other in bewilderment, even Hibino. While the street they had been walking down hadn't been packed it hadn't been empty either. Yet now it was almost completely silent.

"Hello, is anyone there?" Ichijou called. There was no answer. "Something strange is going on here."

Hibino snorted. "You don't miss anything do you closet pervert?"

Ichijou glared at him but before he could reply the fog began to lift. Within seconds it was gone completely. Their eyes all widened at the sight that greeted them.

They were no longer standing in the middle of a street. Now they were in a graveyard. All around them were tombstones and Jizo statues, most of which were crumbling and covered with moss. Family shrines were broken and overrun with weeds. Clearly this graveyard had long been abandoned. Furthermore, the sun was setting even though it was still only afternoon.

"What the hell?" Hibino exclaimed.

"How did we get here?" Michiru asked as she looked around in disbelief.

"And why is it so dark?" Ichijou added.

"Those are all very good questions," said a new voice.

The three of them spun around to see a figure wearing a white robe with a hood that concealed his face. Hibino and Ichijou immediately stepped in front of Michiru.

"Come with me and all of your questions will be answered."

"No chance" Hibino snapped as he stomped towards the robed figure. "Tell Ore-sama where we are and how to get back now or…"

He tried to seize the figure by their robe but his hands passed right through as if it were thin air. Hibino stepped back in shock, as did Ichijou and Michiru.

"A ghost" Ichijou said in astonishment. They had encountered ghosts before but it was still quite a surprise.

"This way," said the ghost. They turned and moved away, floating over the ground without walking.

Hibino frowned. "Ore-sama doesn't like this."

"Hibino, this is the only way to find out what's going on" Michiru pointed out.

He nodded. They followed the ghost until they came to a most unusual sight. Positioned between two dilapidated shrines was a full-size wrestling ring with a green mat, blue ring ropes and wooden steps. The top of each ring post was carved into a skull. A tiled path led from each shrine to the ring.

"Welcome to Monster Brawl, the most electrifying sporting event in the Monster Realm," said the ghost.

"Monster Brawl?" Ichijou repeated.

"Correct. You have been selected for a special contest of Monsters vs. Humans. A showdown for the ages. Each of you will face one of our champions in a series of matches. If you win best of three then you will be returned to your own realm."

"Ha! Why should Ore-sama agree to this?" Hibino asked.

The ghost snapped their fingers. The air around them shimmered and suddenly they were surrounded by an army of monsters of all shapes and sizes. There were vampires, werewolves, mummies, ghouls, goblins, akumas, kitsunes, tengus, kappas and many more.

Before Hibino, Ichijou or Michiru could react, a huge blue-skinned oni pushed his way through the crowd and held up a cage. Inside the cage was someone they recognized immediately.

"Taro!" Ichijou exclaimed.

And indeed, it was Taro. The boy looked up at them, his eyes wide with terror. "Help Ichijou!"

Hibino started to charge but Ichijou and Michiru each took hold of an arm and held him back. "Hibino, there's too many of them" she exclaimed.

Reluctantly he stopped and they let go. He looked at them and they both nodded. Hibino turned to the ghost and said "all right, Ore-sama and his disciples will play your game."

The monsters all cheered. "Monster Brawl! Monster Brawl!" After a moment the ghost raised a hand and they fell silent, but their anticipation remained.

"Splendid" said the ghost. They pointed to the shrine on the left. "You will wait there and come out when called. Any outside interference in a match will result in automatic disqualification."

"That had better go for your side too" Ichijou said angrily.

"Of course," the ghost replied.

As they started towards the shrine Hibino glared at the ghost. "As I said, Ore-sama and his disciples will play your game. And beat you at it."

"We will see."

A few moments later the crowd had settled into two halves, one on either side of the ring. All of the monsters wore excited looks on their inhuman faces and were murmuring eagerly to each other. Taro's cage had been strung up in a tree, suspended above a pool of green slime. In the left shrine Hibino, Michiru and Ichijou watched through a broken window.

The ghost floated up the steps and into the ring, passing right through the ropes. "Monsters from around the world, are you ready for Monster Brawl?"

The audience cheered.

"Then without further ado let's begin! Introducing first, fighting out of the left shrine, the beautiful aspiring jewellery designer, Yamana Michiru!"

Michiru closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She was nervous but determined. Seeing her uncertainty Hibino said, "you'll be fine. Ore-sama doesn't hang out with anyone who isn't strong."

"You can do this" Ichijou added.

"Thanks guys" she said with an appreciative smile. Gathering her resolve she opened the door and strode down the path to the ring. To her surprise the audience cheered.

"Look at that. Yamana already has them on her side," said Hibino smugly. "She learned that from Ore-sama."

Either that or they just want to see two girls fight Ichijou thought but said nothing.

Michiru went up the steps and climbed into the ring. The ghost nodded at her and then turned back to the crowd.

"And her opponent, fighting out of the right shrine, the reanimated ***** from Hell, the Bride of Frankenstein!"

The door to the other shrine opened and out strode a tall woman in a white dress. Her black hair was done up in a conical hairdo with a white lightning-trace streak on either side. She wore black lipstick and bandages were wrapped around her arms. Her skin was a dull, lifeless grey and her face was set in a scowl. She climbed into the ring.

"Let the match begin" said the ghost, fading away as they spoke. The bell rang.

The Bride immediately lunged forwards and swung her fists wildly. Michiru dodged each blow and backed away. The Bride charged at her and she sidestepped. As she did so she stuck out her foot and tripped her opponent up. The undead woman fell and landed face-first on the mat.

I can't beat her head-on. I need to think of something Michiru thought. Wait… that's it!

As the Bride got back to her feet Michiru reached into her bag and took out a compact mirror. She opened it and held it up so that the Bride could see her own face. At once the undead woman's features contorted with rage and she charged like a mad bull. Michiru dodged again and she ran right into a ring post with a loud crash! She fell backwards and hit the mat. This time she didn't get up.

The ghost reappeared and counted as Michiru pinned her unconscious foe. "One, two, three! The winner is Yamana Michiru!"

The audience applauded. Michiru smiled as she strolled back to the shrine where Hibino and Ichijou greeted her.

"Well done, Yamana!" Hibino exclaimed.

"Yes, using the mirror to make her angry was a smart move" Ichijou agreed.

"Thanks" she said brightly. "Based on that, I bet you guys will win your matches easily."

"Ore-sama will certainly" Hibino replied. "The closet pervert, perhaps."

Just then the ghost announced "And now for our second match. Introducing first, fighting out of the left shrine, the rock and roll singer who fights as hard as he plays, Makoto Ichijou!"

"It looks like we'll find out" said Ichijou. He stepped through the door and strode towards the ring. The audience jeered and booed him but he ignored them.

"Do your best Ichijou!" Michiru called.

"Don't embarrass Ore-sama!" Hibino added.

Ichijou entered the ring and stood ready. The ghost raised a hand and the crowd fell silent.

"And his opponent, fighting out of the right shrine, the reigning middle-weight champion of Monster Brawl, the one-eyed warrior, Cyclops!"

The crowd cheered as Cyclops emerged from the monster's shrine. He was a tall, strong figure with sharp teeth and a single eye in the middle of his face. He wore a simple white smock with leather shoulder pads and linen bandages around his fists. Throwing a series of warm-up punches he made his way to the ring.

"Let the match begin." Again, the ghost disappeared and the bell rang.

Cyclops ran in and swung his fist in a huge haymaker. Ichijou ducked under it, caught his foe's arm and used it to slingshot him into the ropes. He bounced off of them and ran right into a flying drop kick from Ichijou that knocked him off his feet. He slammed into the mat. Hibino and Michiru cheered at the sight.

Both combatants got up again. Cyclops unleashed a volley of punches that Ichijou managed to block but was forced to give ground until he was backed towards a ring post. Figuring out what his foe was planning he ducked under a right hook and tried to circle around, but Cyclops seized his arm and executed an Irish Whip that launched him towards the opposite corner of the ring. As Cyclops charged after him for a follow-up attack, Ichijou jumped, bounced off the ropes and landed an elbow strike to his opponent's head that sent him reeling.

But before Ichijou could move in for a follow-up attack Cyclops uttered an enraged roar as his single eye began to glow a bright red. Seeing this Ichijou hesitated and that cost him dearly. A beam of red energy shot from Cyclops's eye and hit him directly in the chest. He screamed in pain as a field of red light engulfed him. The beam ceased and Ichijou fell to the mat, smoke rising from his uniform.

"Ichijou!" Michiru cried.

The ghost reappeared in the ring. "The winner is Cyclops!"

The audience cheered wildly while Hibino and Michiru looked on in dismay. Cyclops lifted Ichijou up and carried him with surprising care back to his friends. Hibino opened the door warily.

"Your friend will be fine," said Cyclops. "He fought bravely and well. I would not want to kill such an honourable foe."

"Thanks" said Hibino wryly as he took Ichijou from Cyclops and set him down on the floor. Cyclops left as Michiru crouched down to check on him.

"Are you okay Ichijou?" she asked.

He coughed and sat up slightly. "I'm fine" he said.

"Really? Because you look like a roast potato," said Hibino.

"I'm fine" he repeated through clenched teeth. "But now we're at one-all."

"That's right. You need to win your match Hibino to save Taro," said Michiru.

He laughed. "Then there's nothing to worry about. Whoever they are they'll never beat Ore-sama in sixty-five million years."

From outside the ghost announced, "And now for our final match. Introducing first, fighting out of the left shrine, the boss of Rakeun High School, the great Hibino Hareluya!"

"Hmm, not as grand an intro as Ore-sama deserves but it will suffice," said Hibino. He stepped outside and strutted down the path, ignoring the jeers from the audience.

"Do your best Hibino!" Michiru called.

"Don't mess up!" Ichijou added. "Taro's counting on you!"

Hibino entered the ring and continued strutting around for a moment before going to his corner. The ghost said, "And his opponent, fighting out of the right shrine, the reigning heavyweight champion of Monster Brawl, Frankenstein!"

"Technically it's Frankenstein's Monster since…" Ichijou began.

"Ichijou, I don't think they care" Michiru interrupted.

The crowd went wild as a huge figure emerged from the monster shrine and lumbered towards the ring. He wore black jeans and a brown sweater. His skin was a dull grey-green and his hair was grey and wispy. A stitched-up scar ran down his face and on either side of his neck was a metal bolt. Around his waist was a black wrestling belt with a gold emblem and white bone designs.

"Heh, this will be easy" said Hibino as the monster clambered into the ring and removed the championship belt. They faced each other in the middle of the ring, the undead giant towering over Hibino.

"You don't look so tough" Hibino taunted.

Frankenstein merely growled at him.

"Let the match begin."

The second the bell rang Hibino sprang forwards and threw a right cross. Frankenstein caught his fist easily and landed an elbow strike that knocked him to the mat. The monster followed up with an elbow drop to the gut that drove the air from his lungs. With a growl Frankenstein hauled Hibino to his feet and slammed him face-first into a ring post.

"Hibino!" Michiru cried.

As Frankenstein wound up for a punch Hibino jumped up and landed a knee strike that drove him back. Hibino climbed to the top of the post and leaped off to deliver a flying drop kick that knocked Frankenstein off his feet.

"He copied me" Ichijou complained.

Hibino got down on the mat and applied a figure-four leg-lock. Frankenstein growled as he strained futilely to break out of it. Hibino grinned fiercely as he anticipated victory.

But Frankenstein wasn't beaten yet. He managed to sit up and slugged Hibino in the face. The impact stunned him enough for Frankenstein to get out of the leg-lock. Both of them got up but before Hibino could fully regain his balance Frankenstein scooped him up and body-slammed him back down to the mat!

The monster roared triumphantly as he stood up and climbed to the top of the nearest ring post. He leaped off the post to deliver a diving headbutt. At the last possible second Hibino rolled out of the way and Frankenstein landed on his head. He groaned and lay dazed.

"Time to end this. Receive your penance at my back!" Hibino said as he reached behind his back. With a flash of light, he pulled out a steel folding chair. As Frankenstein pulled himself up Hibino swung the chair with all his strength and landed a devastating blow to Frankenstein's head. He fell to the mat and lay still.

"And that is it ladies and gentlemen! Hareluya Hibino is the winner of the match!"

The crowd were stunned at first but then they began cheering. Ichijou and Michiru hurried down the path and joined Hibino in the ring. "You did it Hibino!" Michiru exclaimed.

"Naturally. There was no doubt Ore-sama was going to win" he replied smugly.

The ghost materialized in front of them. "Congratulations on your win."

"All right, we won best of three" said Ichijou. "Let Taro go and send us home."

"Of course, that was our deal" the ghost replied.

Indeed, two big ogres were already lowering Taro's cage to the ground. One of them opened the door and Taro immediately ran into Ichijou's arms. Rather than looking scared he was grinning with excitement.

"That was so cool! You guys were amazing!"

"Indeed. This Monster Brawl was even more exciting than we had hoped" the ghost agreed. "As promised you will now be returned to the human realm."

The four of them were once again engulfed in thick mist. Seconds later the mist cleared and they found themselves back on the street they had been walking down.

"I'm glad that's over" said Ichijou. "That had to be one of our strangest experiences ever."

Michiru noticed that Hibino was scowling. "What's wrong Hibino?"

"Where's Ore-sama's championship belt? Ore-sama won that belt. How dare they send me back without it!"

"It's okay Hibino" Michiru said reassuringly. "We all know what happened."

"Besides nobody would believe us anyway" Ichijou added.

"True" Hibino admitted. "You're right. I don't need a belt to show how magnificent I am."

"Or how insufferable" Ichijou muttered. Michiru laughed softly.

"Come my minions. Let's celebrate our win with a feast of okonomiyaki!"

"Yeah!"

The group strolled away, feeling well pleased with themselves. They may not be able to tell anyone about winning Monster Brawl, but they knew and that was what really mattered.
