p style="text-indent: .5in; margin-top: .17in; margin-bottom: .17in; line-height: 138%;"span style="font-variant: normal;"When you live in a small-town people tend to know things about each other. It's almost funny how everyone's dirty laundry just flows through the air on the tips of gossiping tongues. I work at a small diner that my family has run for over 60 years; we are the only diner in town. So, it comes with the territory that we should hear a little bit about almost everyone. My grandfather named it "Maximoff's' ' but everyone just calls us "Maxy's"./span span style="font-variant: normal;"Blackwood is a quiet town, barely more than a Main Street with a few shops, some old houses scattered for about 25 square miles, as are most towns in Vermont. But for most of us that call Blackwood home it's all we've ever known. The shops are nice enough, as long as you don't try and talk to the woman who owns "Mar'vels, the only place to buy clothes in town, the woman who runs it is Carol Danvers, she is barely more than a mean drunk on a good day. It's generally best to get what you need and get the hell out./span/p

Heavy boxes of meat, bags of eggs, veggies. The basement used to be a speakeasy, which my mother always feels the need to tell almost anyone new who comes in. Most of the regulars already knew or came during that time themselves. My sister and myself do the waitressing, my twin brother Pietro works the kitchen. We have a wonderful old man named "Bucky" as we all call him in the dish room. Bucky is quiet and keeps to himself for the most part but is always kind to anyone he comes across. Although he did punch Pietro right in the face one time. Only ones who know why are Bucky and Pietro. We are all content to leave it at that. Pietro can be a little antagonistic sometimes./span/p

My sister never gets upset with how long it takes me to organize the deliveries. She hates doing it. The door creaks as I leave the dark basement, and I wash my face in the sink. Hating the feeling of being sweaty. I dry up and head out to the dining room. Natasha is taking the order from Tony Stark, the chief of police. He always gets the same thing, and always makes some kind of sarcastic remark that might make other girls giggle. But Natasha doesn't seem at all impressed with Stark. Most girls with half a brain stay away from him./span/p

Natasha said as she headed over to the kitchen to give Pietro Stark's order. I busy myself wiping down the freshly empty table nearest to a large window. We have a wonderful view from there, you can see a lake down further into the valley, and mountains scattered across the horizon. The leaves are beginning to change as the weather cools. It's always been my favorite season, not too cold. Not too hot./span/p

I feel like a stalker from a spot in the kitchen that he couldn't see, I can't help but wonder what would a well-off handsome banker want with the daughter of a blue-collar restaurant owner anyway? We had never had much as far as money goes, always just enough to keep a roof over our head and clothes on our backs. Victor was wearing an expensive well-tailored suit. The nicest thing I owned was a pair of black jeans without any major holes that I wore at work. His hair is slicked back perfectly, mine was a tangled mess of dark brown curly hair. Generally just thrown into a messy bun, I am not even sure it is possible for me to have hair that isn't a wreck. I would never have more of him than fantasy.
