Hart to Hart
Fix This
Jennifer remained silent as the beeping of the machines connected to Betsy filled the room. Jonathan and Dr. Bedoff left the room, giving her time alone with her cousin.
Pulling up a chair beside the hospital bed, Jennifer bit her lip to keep a sob from escaping her throat as tears threaten to fall from her eyes. She was too young to have a heart attack; she said to herself. Amphetamines, the doctor said, but how could that be? Betsy wasn't on any diet pills. She made sure of it.
Her and Betsy's mother Angela worked night and day with Betsy to get her off those diet pills. With eating a well balance meals and having proper exercise, Betsy pulled through and was back to her normal cheerful self again. But now this happened, and just like that, they were back to square one.
Jennifer contacted Angela once, explaining what happen to Betsy. She forced herself to push past Angela's screams as she sobbed over the phone.
"You always have a knack for attracting trouble…. now it hurt my baby and I can even be there with her." Angela said thought her sobs. "Fix this Jennifer like you always do, please, for my baby."
Tears escaped Jennifer's eyes, trickling down her cheeks. Fix this. How could she do that? She wasn't sure where to start. What if Betsy's condition grew worse what then? More tears flooded her vison as Jennifer closed her eyes, rubbing her head.
With her mind plagued with so many questions and no answers only gave her a headache.
Fix this…..Fix this
Angela's words continued repeating over and over in her mind when she opened her eyes she looked into the baby blue eyes of her husband, Jonathan who gently caressed her cheek.
Wiping away her tears as he looked deep into her eyes, Jennifer looked back at him, lost in his gaze.
In times like this, Jonathan was her rock that no matter bad it got, he always kept her going.
Talking a hold of her hands, Jonathan helped Jennifer to her feet. He didn't say a word as he continued looking into Jennifer's eyes. Pulling her close, Jennifer wrapped her arms around Jonathan's waist as she burred her head into his chest. Jonathan gently stroked her back as the sob Jennifer had been holding on finally came to the surface.
Rocking her gently as he continued stroking her back, Jonathan remained silent. He knew this was not a time for words. She needed to cry and so he would be her tissue and let her cry for as long as she needed.
Jonathan remembered how hard Jennifer and Angela worked to get Betsy free of those diet pills. He remembers those countless nights that Jennifer had to stay over at their house. One day he came and the screams from Betsy's room, along with the sobs, shook him to the core. He helped Jennifer empty dozens of diet pills into the toilet. After flushing them when Jennifer turned around, her hair was disheveled and eyes were red from crying. Even though that pain, her eyes still held determination. and within a few weeks Betsy was smiling and laughing. They did it.
Now Betsy as Betsy laid in the hospital bed, he already knew what Jennifer was thinking. She was back to square one and this time she didn't have Angela with her. All she got from the phone call from her was a lot of yelling and sobs. He knew deep down Jennifer was hurting. She needed this for the tears she pushed down deep, the tears she forced herself not to shed while talking to Angela.
An hour passed. Jennifer continued to snuggle close to Jonathan, but her sobs have finally ceased. She rests her head on his chest. After a few moments, he took a deep breath.
"We need to fix this, darling," Jennifer said.
"Don't worry, we will," Jonathan said.
Jennifer looked up into her husband's eyes. As Jonathan looked back at his wife that when he saw it, the determination sparkling in her eyes just like it did back then. Yes, they would fix this while he was fully sure how right now, he knew they wouldn't stop until they did.
