Dies irae - Animation OST: disce libens
Ever wondered what it was like for one man to make an impact on many people's lives, no matter how slightly or more so?
Well, this story speaks of it at least. Of course, it would be rather impossible to cover all of them as there are many that were influenced by this individual. Nevertheless, this story tends to speak of it at least.
It at least speaks of the ever-defying concept.
That one person can make a difference.
Godou Kusanagi, a handsome young man with a firm build, who is known to be called a Campione - a Godslayer and is also known to be a chosen successor of Kamen Rider OOO, is well-dressed for a specific occasion. A simple black-white jacket and a dark blue shirt underneath, grey pants and black shoes.
He was well-dressed, with a small cross-body bag worn around him, and appeared to be going out somewhere. And that would make at least four women such as Erica Blandelli, Yuri Mariya, Liliana Kranjčar, and Ena Seishuin notice immediately. In fact, they were going to ask Godou about it as they were all on the table, but...
They couldn't. Not this time. This time, the entire table was completely quiet. What used to be a cliché occurrence wherein who among the women get's to spend quality time with Godou turns into something else as they could see the very sober and serious expression that was present from the young man. The breakfast would turn sober as they and Shizuka Kusanagi, who made the breakfast in part, were concerned for him.
No one spoke a word throughout breakfast. And then, when it came time for him to make his leave just as he finished eating breakfast, he slowly stood up and take his leave.
"Girls, I'm gonna be gone on a trip for a while, but I promise that I'll come back quickly. Shizuka, watch out for the house for me until then..."
"Eh...?"
The girls all looked concerned for the young man, Erica most of all, as they tried to ask questions about where he was going. But one serious look on him made them rather silent. With no other word to say, he took his leave. Of course, that wouldn't stop Erica, Yuri, Liliana, and Ena from following the young man, letting Shizuka handle the house for the time being. As the four girls were following him by stealth for some time, it would eventually lead them straight toward what appeared to be a blue police box. The words "POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX" were present on the top.
The door was open by the time Godou came near and knocked on the door, revealing a man in his mid-twenties wearing a sportjacket forged from light fawn Donegal tweed with elbow patches, a burgundy striped dress shirt and bow tie with matching braces, rolled up midnight blue trousers, and dark, laced-up boots. He was carrying a grim expression on his face, acknowledging Godou with a sad smile.
"...Lord Doctor," Erica made a muttering sound of concern, recognizing the man that her Campione had considered to be a mentor figure. A man who was well known in legends and myths, a man well respected even by the Heretic Gods of their world, a man that completely silenced the Multiverse. When she discovered this, she was rather surprised that her Campione was associated with someone of this prestige. Even more so when she discovered that he was a companion of the Doctor. But then, that would have also explained the confident personality that Godou Kusanagi had been known for, showing less surprise and less fear but simply push forward with a steeled determination.
The girls were all looking at each other. What does this have to do with that serious and sad expression that Godou had? It made them rather worried as whenever the Doctor is present from time to time, it has to be rather serious which could explain in part of why Godou was making that serious expression. Would that also explain why Godou didn't want the four of them to come along this time? Perhaps, but they lack further context.
The Doctor and Godou appeared to be talking to each other briefly but the girls can't hear what they were saying, but their expressions were troubled enough. Suddenly, Godou, with a surprised expression, turned around in the direction where the girls were hiding. Both the Doctor and Godou were looking at them, having figured out that they were there, much to the surprise of the girls.
The four girls didn't know what they were getting themselves into. All they could tell was the sober atmosphere that was present from inside the main console room of the TARDIS.
"We're...going to visit an old friend of mine, girls," Godou would say with a sad smile.
They never asked...if only because they could see just behind the smile and told all that they need to know. They were about to visit someone that may have already long since passed away. Another secret of Godou Kusanagi's life would be shown to the four of them in relation to his other life in the simple TARDIS.
It would appear that the situation would be serious this time in a very different way. It wouldn't be some alien invasion or whatever was happening with the universe or other daily problem that the Doctor usually tackles.
No, this time they would visit another universe, where there was a cemetery located in a city that had a bat as its protector.
Its name...
Gotham Cemetery.
They would all silently exit the TARDIS and walk the paths, seeing the graves of those who have gone before and too little too soon. After a few meters, they eventually stopped by a certain grave. And...
"...!"
Godou simply knelt down with both knees out of respect and slightly giving way to a very deep sadness whose scars ran deeper than what it seemed on the surface. Erica immediately hastens to the man that she loved and touches his shoulder gently, her expression was one of worry as she never sees Godou like this before. Yes, she is more than aware of the various sides of the character of Godou Kusanagi by now based on the little adventures that she had with him. But this...this was new. She and the girls turned to the Doctor who only remained silent and gave an empathetic expression that was pointed at the kneeling Godou.
Aside from Erica, after a few moments, the rest would follow and gather around the young man that had touched their lives and their hearts.
The girls stared at the grave and read the following.
HERE LIES JASON PETER TODD.
FRIEND. BROTHER. SOLDIER.
MOST IMPORTANTLY.
A SON.
From what little that can be said, the girls can tell that whoever this "Jason Peter Todd" was, this person was probably close to Godou Kusanagi in the past. Emphasis on the past. Whatever happened, they all wondered.
"...Jason Peter Todd," the Doctor begins to explain just as he figured out the expressions that all of the girls were showing for Godou. "He was one of my students in the past, a brilliant young man, a little rough around the edges, but he was brilliant in his own way. And he was a brother figure to Godou and several other students of mine."
"It's been years..." Godou finally uttered a word if only a bit softly which surprised the girls for a bit. "...Been so many years since he died...That...That was one of the worst days of my life really. That was the very first time that I actually felt like I lost someone important, someone that I and many others looked up to. It felt like the first time we ever lost one of our own, one of the family. The guy never really had any powers as I and the others did. No, he had nothing but pure skill, a lot of good luck, and sharp thinking. He...He was...He was a hero to us precisely because he had no power except for himself."
And with only a simple explanation, he remained silent once more while simply content to contemplate the grave of his old friend. And yet, there were slight tears that were threatening to come out but he tried his best to hold them back and simply closed his eyes.
All of the girls were now looking back and forth between the grave and Godou. All they could really do was simply give him some form of silent support by embracing the young man that they could clearly see was hurting from the inside out.
They never really saw this side of Godou Kusanagi before. All they ever saw was a man brave enough to face down the gods and make his authority felt with a confidence that made him quite attractive which would also be included in his tendency, exasperating to the girls themselves, of being a natural-born lady killer. But they were now witnessing a much more vulnerable side to Godou Kusanagi and they felt that they should be here right now to offer some silent support.
Today was no special occasion.
This was simply a tradition that individuals associated with TARDIS School tend to do from time to time. A daily visit to the grave of a young man who influenced many.
