Shinji and Asuka's 2022 Thanksgiving
"Asuka, what are you doing?"
"What does it look like I'm doing, Shinji? I'm writing."
"But what are you writing?"
Asuka rolled her eyes. "The Mayflower Compact. What else?"
Shinji frowned. "But why?"
"Why not?" Asuka retorted. "It's an important piece of history, and I thought it would be fun to imagine what it would be like if we were there."
"But we're not English settlers or Native Americans," Shinji pointed out.
"So?" Asuka shrugged. "It's just a story. Besides, it's not like it's hard to imagine. You can be the English settler and I'll be the Native American."
Shinji considered this for a moment. "I guess that makes sense."
"Good," Asuka said, pleased. "Now let's get started."
She began to write, and Shinji watched over her shoulder.
"In the name of God, Amen," Asuka wrote. "We, the undersigned, do solemnly and mutually in the presence of God and one another covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony unto which we promise all due submission and obedience."
As she wrote, Shinji couldn't help but be impressed by Asuka's eloquence. She really was a gifted writer.
When she was finished, she signed her name with a flourish.
"There," she said, handing the paper to Shinji. "Your turn."
Shinji hesitated for a moment, then took the paper and began to write.
"In the name of God, Amen," he wrote.
When he was finished, he signed his name with a sense of satisfaction. It was strange to think that their names would one day be remembered by people all over the world.
"There," he said, handing the paper back to Asuka. "All done."
Asuka smiled. "It's been an honor, Shinji."
"The honor is all mine, Asuka," Shinji replied.
And with that, they sealed the Mayflower Compact with their signatures.
