With a groan, Amity crumpled up yet another ugly looking glyph and threw the paper. She can't get her circle to look right.
Footsteps came closer, pausing right outside the door for a second, before continuing. Amity looked up to see Luz entering, the crumpled paper in her hand. "Hola, batata, having some trouble?" Luz's tone held amusement. Amity just groaned again, letting her face fall into her hands. "I've been drawing glyphs for twenty minutes, and I haven't drawn one perfect circle."
She felt Luz's hands on her shoulders, as her girlfriend took in the mess of half drawn and restarted ovals. Because that's what they were. Not circles. The hands squeezed. "You know, I actually have something that might help you. It's not a perfect fix, but for now…" Luz trailed off. Amity turned to her nodding, with hope in her eyes. Anything to help her get this right.
"I'll be right back." Luz went to the living room for a minute, before joining Amity at the table. In the meantime, Amity tried another circle, this one shaky before she even tried to curve it.
Luz sat down with something in her hands. "Alright, so, take this." She held out some weird plastic contraption, with a sharp metal bit, and a pencil embedded in it. A weapon? How would a weapon help? Amity lurched back, then leaned in closer to whisper. "Uhhh, Luz, does Camila know you have that?"
Luz just looked confused. "Yea? She bought it for me?" Amity was reeling. She's not sure what she thought humans were like, but giving their children weapons wasn't a thing she had on her bingo card. "She bought you a weapon!?" Luz's eyebrows shot up. She looked at the item in her hand and then back at Amity. She started to… laugh?
Why is she laughing? Should I be worried? Luz reached out and grabbed Amity's hand with her free one. She pulled it over to the weird sharp bit. "Here, look, it's not actually that sharp. This isn't a weapon, though it can be a little sharp, it's for math. It's called a compass."
Amity's eyebrows furrowed even as she felt what Luz was saying by pricking her finger. It really wasn't that sharp and the pencil was slightly in the way of the pointy bit. "Aren't those the things with directions? This tells direction?"
Luz shook her head. "No language is weird, same name, different functions. Look what it does."
Luz took the piece of paper that had been sitting in front of Amity and placed the metal point in the center. She pulled the pencil back from where it had rested, opening up the device at an angle. She placed the pencil to the paper and began to twirl the plastic top of the compass. Amity felt her jaw drop.
A perfect circle.
She practically fell over herself trying to grab the thing from Luz, but luckily Luz just laughed. Amity drew a circle.
And another one.
And another one.
All perfect. She let out a triumphant laugh. Putting the compass down first (that metal bit still would kinda hurt straight on), she tackled Luz into a hug and started peppering her cheeks with kisses. "Oh thank you, thank you, thank you! I love you!"
Amity froze and flushed bright scarlet. She hadn't meant to let that slip out.
Luz pulled back, expression half frozen, half mystified, as blush began to creep up. A smile started to take over her face. Luz reached out and put a hand on her cheek. "Amity, I– I love you too."
Amity's heart melted.
She leaned in and Luz met her halfway for a kiss.
