Talking aloud to self
Phil Collins Singing
10 years later, Kala is sound asleep on a bright, sunny morning. She slowly cracks opens her eyes, blinking sleepily and tightly wraps her arms around herself, thinking she's hugging Tarzana. Upon feeling air where Tarzana should be Kala feels around still waking up. Suddenly, her eyes open wide with a start as she realizes that Tarzana is missing. She starts to frantically look around their nest for her. Kala calls out her daughter's name in fear.
Kala: Tarzana?
Unbeknownst to her, Tarzana is hanging around in some vines above her. She is now 10 years old with long brown hair covering her bare chest. Her skin has darked slightly over the years turning olive. Her blue-green eyes vibrant with life. She wears a dark brown loincloth around her waist, covering most of her waist. She waits a couple of seconds and lets out a loud trumpet like an elephant, alarming Kala. Without having to look, Kala playfully scolds her daughter.
Kala: Tarzana!
Kala now looks above her to where she heard Tarzana's elephant call. Hanging upside-down from the vines, the young girl has a playful look on her face. She teases her mother.
Tarzana: I sure scared you, Mama.
Kala sighs in relief knowing her daughter wasn't actually missing but pranking her.
Kala: You sure did! (Tarzana goes to bring herself down to the ground but slips slightly. Kala quickly catches her with one arm.) Can't you imitate any quieter animals?
Tarzana climbs on her mom's shoulders before stopping by her head. Kala has a big smile on her face as her daughter pets her head.
Tarzana: Aw Mama, they are no fun. (Tarzana gets a devilish look in her eyes,) Wanna see me be a leopard?
She snarls like a leopard and makes a slashing motion with one hand. Kala grabs her daughter gently placing her back on the ground before giving her a suggestion.
Kala: Why don't you just come up with your own sound?
A mischievous grin appears on Tarzana's face as an idea comes to her head. She places a quick kiss to her mom's cheek. The ape girl runs away on four legs, making her own sound and tricks. Kala shakes her head lovingly. Tarzana passes three mother gorillas grooming their babies. The other gorilla babies see what she's doing and like it. They copy the noises, alarming their mothers. The mother's scold Kala for giving Tarzana the idea.
Gorilla Mothers: Kala!
Kala shrugs her shoulders as if saying "What can you do, kids will be kids." As Tarzana continues running away, she runs into a familiar gorilla's leg, making her fall back. She looks and yelps as she sees Kerchak frowning at her.
Tarzana: Oops, hee-hee. (She backs off as Kerchak lowly growls at her, an apologetic look on her face.) I'm sorry, fa-
Before she can finisher her apology, a familiar young gorilla runs in and hugs her. A now 13 year old Terk is hugging her cousin. She's grown taller and her fur has grown out more. Her fur has lightened some from the previous years.
Terk: Tarzana, thank goodness you're all right! Kala and I have been so worried. (Terk fake cries out before speaking to Kerchak.) Thank you! Thank you so much for finding her, Kerchak. You are such a wise and caring leader. (Kerchak rolls his eyes in annoyance. Terk chuckles sheepishly, before whispering to Tarzana.) Run!
Terk runs off leaving Tarzana with Kerchak again. Kerchak sighs and shakes his head before going to walk off.
Tarzana: Um...
Tarzan chuckles nervously before running off after Terk. Soon the two get away from Kerchak. Terk hides behind a tree waiting for Tarzana to catch up. Tarzana keeps running but before she can run past Terk, Terk grabs her by the waist pulling her behind the tree with her.
Terk: Hello! Are you thick in the head?
Terk shakes her cousin by the shoulders as she semi-scolds her. Tarzana looks on confused at what her cousin was talking about.
Tarzana: What?
Terk places a hand on her shoulder tenderly before talking.
Terk: How many times do I have to tell ya? If you want Kerchak to like you, stay away from him!
She pokes Tarzana on the nose pushing her back a little teasingly. In retaliation Tarzana tries to push Terk back some, but sadly fails to do so. Terk looks down to her with a smirk. Unable to win physically, Tarzana goes to defend her previous actions with Kerchak.
Tarzana: I didn't mean to! I was just playing around and accidently ran into Father.
Terk: Don't let him hear you say that. You know what happens when you do so.
Tarzana: I know he doesn't want me calling him that, but I just want him to treat me as his daughter. I want my dad to love me and accept me for who I am.
Tarzana shrinks back, sitting on the ground sulking a little. Understanding what she needs, Terk gives Tarzana a hug in comfort.
Terk: I know. But you have to be more careful. I don't want you getting hurt or yelled at.
Tarzana: Thanks Terk.
Tarzana smiles up at her. The two sharing a sweet moment until it is interrupted by the sound of laughter. They see two figures nearby causing the laughter. One of them who is kind of skinny being Flynt and the fatter one being Mungo. Flynt calls out to Terk as the two pause on their journey.
Flynt: C'mon, Terk! Step on it!
Mungo: Last one there's a dung beetle!
The two run off towards the watering hole. Terk breaks from the hug and calls after them remembering how she was going to hang out with them earlier.
Terk: Yeah, and the first one has to eat it! (She chuckles at the teasing remark.)
Wanting to spend more time with her cousin, Tarzana questions her.
Tarzana: Terk, can I come?
Terk goes to run off but hesitates. While she likes to be with Tarzana, she can be a problem at times, even though it's not intentional. Now some of the times its Terk's fault but she had promised to hang out with the two gorilla boys earlier. She had hoped to have some alone time hanging out with others instead of with her cousin. Trying to keep the peace, she tries to break it to Tarzana gently without upsetting her.
Terk: Well, you could if you could keep up, but you know, you can't really keep up. (Terk calls out to the two boys.) Wait up, guys! Wait up! Right behind you.
She runs away, missing the hurt look on Tarzana's face. Tarzana knows that she's not the fastest, but it still hurt that Terk didn't think she could keep up. Usually Terk is very supportive and reassuring when it comes to things like that. Her face hardens a little with determination clearly written on her face.
At the watering hole you can see a beautiful waterfall. The water is crystal clear falling to the water below. Several elephants herd together, enjoying the cool sensation at their feet. Flynt and Mungo are hanging out on the cliffside. They play fight each other.
Mungo: Take that! (He smacks Flynt on the head.)
Flynt smirks as he grabs Mungo's arm and makes Mungo punching himself.
Flynt: Stop hitting yourself. Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!
Breaking through the forest edge Terk enters, singing with a Cyndi Lauper-type voice.
Terk: The fun has arrived! (She bows grandly before speaking and posing like Elvis Presley.) Thank you very much!
Flynt looks over to Terk questioning on what took her.
Flynt: Hey, what took you so long?
Terk dusts off her fur from the trip over to the watering hole.
Terk: I had a little pest control problem. But it's all taken care of. (Tarzana swings in on a vine through the bushes, accidently knocking into Terk.) Whoa!
Tarzana's hair is askew with twigs and leaves in her curls. She greets the two gorilla boys happy she was able to find them all.
Tarzana: Hi, guys.
Flynt moans in aggravation while Mungo face-palms himself. Flynt slightly glares at Terk before questioning her accusatory.
Flynt: Terk! What is this? Some kind of joke?
Mungo: Tell me I'm not looking at the hairless wonder.
Tarzana cleans her hair of the objects, a confused look on her face. She speaks up voicing her conversation with Terk.
Tarzana: Well, Terk said I could come along if I could keep up.
Both Flynt and Mungo groan together at Terk's actions. Now they have to spend time with Tarzana that they weren't expecting.
Flynt & Mungo: Oh no, Terk!
Terk cringes in shame for unintentionally inviting her cousin, and for lying to her as well. She decides to talk with Tarzana.
Terk: I'll handle this guys, okay? (She walks over to her cousin.) Listen, buddy, c'mere. We got a tiny, little, itsy-bitsy problem here, okay? (The two walk off together to talk.) Personally, I'd love to hang out with you. You know I would. But the guys...they need a little convincing, you know?
A look of understanding comes onto Tarzana's face. However she is determined to 'prove' them wrong and that she can convince them to let her join them.
Tarzana: Okay, what do I gotta do?
The question takes Terk by surprise, not expecting her to want to put in the effort to stay around. Then again she should have seen it coming considering who her cousin is.
Terk: Do? (She rubs her neck sheepishly.) What do you have to do? (Terk laughs while itching herself.) It's so stupid.
Tarzana curiously asks what she has to do.
Tarzana: What?
Terk: Well, you gotta... (Terk twirls some of her fur hair around her finger before a strand comes off. Looking at the hair she gets an idea.) you gotta go get a hair!
Tarzana: A hair?
Tarzana says skeptically.
Terk: Yeah, a hair, uh-huh. (An elephant trumpet sounds from below the cliffside. In one last ditch effort to have Tarzana go back home she says something that she believes no one would attempt to go after.) An elephant hair!
She points below them, and Tarzana sees the herd of elephants hanging out. Two elephants fight one another in the water. Their tusks clashing against each other.
Tarzana: An elephant hair?
She asks suddenly scared and unsure if it was worth it.
Terk: Like I said, it's stupid, right? (Terk leads her away from the cliff.) Listen, take it from me. Go home, okay? Who needs this aggravation? You know, I'm probably gonna leave soon myself. (Tarzana nods back as she leaves the scene.) You go, I'll catch up. Alright? You see? Leave it to me. (Terk tells her friends happy that her cousin took her advice. This makes the gorillas sigh in relief.) I told you... (Tarzana rushes past her and runs toward the cliff.) TARZANA! Tarzana, no! (Horror and fear were in her voice, not believing that her cousin was actually going to go after the hair.)
It's too late since the ape girl jumps right away. She lets out her famous call as she dives towards the water below. Soon she comes to a swift stop as she lands in the water on her stomach...hard. The group, watching her, winces.
Mungo: Ooh! That one hurt her! (He says sympathetically.)
Terk's face morphs to one of concern. Meanwhile, Tarzana sinks into the water and lands on a hippopotamus, surprising him. As he stares at the girl, he begins to move. Tarzana pushes off of the hippo. The hippo then starts to swim away. Watching the hippo's swimming technique she copies it. She swims off having nailed the technique and heads to the surface.
Tarzana's friends scan the water from the cliffside looking for her. Terk spots her, pointing to where she is in the water as she surfaces. She calls out in relief.
Terk: Look, oh, oh, there she is! She's alive!
Tarzana waves up to her friends on the cliffside.
Tarzana: Hey, guys!
They all wave back to her.
Flynt & Mungo: Hi!
She salutes them before heading for the elephants. Terk pleads to Tarzana as she cries a little.
Terk: Oh no, no, no, no, no! (Flynt and Mungo chuckle immaturely.) Come back, come back!
Flynt: This girl's great! Hey, if she lives you should bring her around more often! (He slugs Terk in the shoulder playfully.)
Mungo: C'mon. Come on. Let's go get a better seat! (They leave to watch if Tarzana can accomplish the task, but Terk stays behind.)
Terk: Oh.
Terk rubs a hand to her face in frustration. She knows that whatever happens is her fault. Knowing that Tarzana will need her help eventually she turns back and goes after Flynt and Mungo so she can be at the watering hole, ready to help her.
