Welcome to what-if number 4. This one will be a little different than the others since it's going to be multi-chapter instead of just the one-shot. I have most of it written, so I think it will be about 5 chapters and 10,000 words. I really hope to have everything up this week, the ending is just giving me trouble. I will admit, this goes a bit off-track from the original question. Still, I hope you enjoy!

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha.

Pack (What-if)

Chapter 1

The man, the legend, stood upon the snowy hilltop. He was bleeding profusely, but still kept his back turned to the son he knew was too honorable to kill a wounded man.

"Father, do you insist on going?"

"Do you intend to stop me, Sesshomaru?"

"I will not stand in your way. However, before you go, you must entrust the swords So'unga and Tessaiga to me."

"And if I refuse, will you kill me, your own father?" The boy is not ready to lead. "Do you desire power so much? Why do you seek power, my son?"

"The path I walk is the Way of Supreme Conquest, and it is power that will reveal the way for me."

"Supreme Conquest. Tell me Sesshomaru, have you someone to protect?"

"Protect? The answer is no. I, Sesshomaru, have no need of such." You are wrong.

The father sighed and finally turned back to his son. "You fail to understand much, son. Tell me, do you wish to know my path? That which led us to this moment?"

"You wish to repeat a story father? Your mortal is in danger, is she not?"

"This is not a story you know, Sesshomaru. You believe in the path of Supreme Conquest as I once did. But that is only the path the legends tell. It omits much." He turned back on the hillside and began gathering his youki to transform. "The choice is yours son. Your path towards Supreme Conquest will one day fail, I guarantee this. If you wish to know the truth, then offer me your aid, and I will give you So'unga by day's end. But with one warning, should you draw the blade before the lesson has been learned, it will mark the beginning of the end of your reign." The Inu no Taisho completed his transformation and ran after Izayoi. One day you will find someone to protect Sesshomaru, but by then, how much will you have lost that can never be regained?

Sesshomaru watched the true form of his father run off in pursuit of the mortal woman. Ridiculous. Father believes this will convince me to help him? He watched the patches of blood drip off his father. Do you think yourself that important to me? The only thing I regret is that I will not be the one to defeat you father. Sesshomaru didn't move from the spot. Bokuseno will know father's history. How much could I truly not know? Sesshomaru still didn't move from the spot. So'ungo though. Will he truly give me the blade if I aid him? Sesshomaru looked down at his own sash. A true blade. The strongest of father's blades. I am positive I could handle the blade's power, but can I wield it? Is that what father's story is for, to understand the blade? That's why he warned me not to wield it until the lesson was learned? Sesshomaru allowed himself to smile slightly. So be it, father has always enforced honesty, but if he has chosen to lie to me out of desperation, then I will simply kill the woman and newborn. No matter what, the blade is mine.

Unlike his father who was low on strength, Sesshomaru simply enveloped himself in an orb of light and shot off towards the battlefield. There, he found the mansion ablaze with an untold number of soldiers dead out front. He calmly walked through the destroyed front gate while sniffing out his father's location. Soon, he also heard the cries of an infant. Walking into a room, he saw his father and some human man with their blades draw towards each other. There was also the scent of Izayoi's blood. He glanced towards the woman, who seemed fine, and saw the spear that had obviously been used to kill her. Killing a pregnant woman? This man does not even deserve the honor of being killed in battle. And so, using his poison whip, he cut the man in half without him ever realizing he was there.

"Sesshomaru!" his father called.

"I did not come for you father, I merely desire So'unga."

The man chucked, "so be it." Quickly grabbing Izayoi, he fled the fiery mansion. Sesshomaru followed lazily. Soon they reached a small clearing where the Inu no Taisho put down Izayoi before collapsing himself. He took a few deep, painful breaths before noticing Sesshomaru's gaze. "I am not dying yet." Though, both could tell his wounds were bad.

"Dearest," came from the third person present.

"I'll live. How is our child?" he asked.

Izayoi took a look at the crying bundle in her arms and smiled. "Well. Takemaru didn't touch him. I think he wanted him to starve to death painfully." That thought saddened her, what would their child's future be like?

"Him?" He hummed, "Inuyasha." She glanced at him. "The boy's name will be Inuyasha."

"Inuyasha," she repeated.
