Talking aloud to self
Jammy has now reached her house. Her hair still drooping but her stomach no longer hurting. She pushes the front door open with Goddard following her. She looks to the living room and calls out.
Jammy: Mama? Daddy? (Before walking up the stairs to her bedroom, Jammy's mood becomes increasingly saddened. The realization of her parents not coming back has taken its toll. While on the stairs Jammy looks to the family photo that they had taken just the month prior. Seeing her parents smiling faces broke her heart even more. She look downwards, her head sullen. Jammy begins to think aloud as tears started to form in her eyes.) What kind of parents take off and leave their kid? Why would they leave all of a sudden?
Jammy walks into her room stripping herself of yesterday's clothes. Walking into her closet she grabs a new outfit before slipping on the pants. She sits on her bed fidgeting her new shirt down her upper half, the old shirt gripped in her hand. She throws her shirt across the room in anger and hurt.
Jammy: And they didn't even say goodbye.
Jammy's voice cracked as the tears finally fell. Goddard whine in distress for Jammy. Seeing her upset was the worst thing to Goddard. He rubbed his head against her in comfort as she latched onto him in a tight hug. The tears gently hitting his metallic head, soft sobs escaping Jammy's mouth. Having an idea Goddard wriggled away from Jammy hopping to the floor. He opened his mouth and a screen projected. On it was a recording of the night Jammy left to Retroland, from when her parents came to see her.
Hugh: Princess, (Jammy's head perked up upon hearing her dad. She looked at the screen with longing. She takes her hand and wipes the tears away from her eyes.) your mother and I just wanted to say good night.
Judy: Yes. And to tell you that we love you.
The screen then jumps to another time from that night. Goddard knew Jammy would want to hear the next few words that Judy had spoken that night from her mom in person and not in a recording.
Hugh: We only do what we do because we love you.
Judy: Maybe we can all go to Retroland next weekend, the three of us. (Judy says trying to comfort Jammy. Judy then turns to leave when 'Jammy' spoke up.)
Goddard "Jammy": What about my fabulous dog Goddard? (Jammy looks at Goddard lovingly, a small smile coming on her face.)
Hugh: Sure. Your fabulous dog Goddard, too. Well, good night, princess.
Judy: Good night, Jammy. Sweet dreams. We'll see you in the morning. (She says lovingly. Hugh then closes the door so 'Jammy' can sleep.)
Goddard then powers down the projector, turning to look at Jammy. Jammy pats the bed for Goddard to come over. Goddard walks over nudging her leg.
Jammy: Thanks, boy. I needed that. (She pets Goddard's head in thanks for cheering her up.) OK. So they said good night.
Jammy says a little hoarse from the crying before she rubs her neck. Her eyes then widen in realization.
Jammy: "In the morning"? (She exclaims quoting her mom from the recording.) Hey, wait a minute. (Jammy jumps off the bed with a lot more energy than she had that morning. She looks to Goddard with determination.) Play back the last part again. Audio only.
Goddard rewinds the recording and then speaks it to Jammy.
Goddard (Judy voice): Good night, Jammy. Sweet dreams. We'll see you in the morning.
Jammy taps her head thoughtfully. She then points to Goddard for her point.
Jammy: There. Why would she say that if they weren't gonna be here? (Jammy raises her hands in confusion.) Come on, Goddard. We're going to the lab. (She runs out of her room with Goddard following.)
We see the screen of Jammy's scan word matcher, scanning the letter from the fridge and comparing it to previous notes written by her parents. Some of the notes consisted of saying things like "Back soon... Shopping for toaster. Love, Mama", "Gone out for chicken! Love, Daddy", "Jammy, Clean your room! Mama", and "Jammy, have you seen my duck? -Daddy". All of them showing no match between the writings.
Jammy: It's just as I thought. The serifs and kerning on the note don't match Mama's and Daddy's handwriting. (She removes her eyes from the scanner.) This note's a fake! (Goddard barks to get Jammy's attention.) What is it, boy?
Jammy runs across the lab to where Goddard is sitting on the seat in front of her computer. The alert signal is still going off. Goddard barks again pointing his head at the screen. Jammy looks at the alert on her computer screen.
Jammy: The Long-Range Space Scanner. It detected something. (Jammy pushes a button on her computer causing the alert to change showing the earth and pink dots surrounding it.) Filtering out background radiation and... There it is. (She points at the screen.) Jumping Jupiter! (She turns to Goddard wide eyed in shock.) The Earth's been visited by aliens! (Jammy wiggles her fingers as her voice squeaks. Goddard screeches in fear.)
We now see an alien on a comic book. The alien has a huge brain, one eye and razor sharp teeth. Above the alien is the title Space Menace. Carla is reading over the comic book. Jammy is rebuilding her original rocket ship. Jammy is lying on the ground under the rocket ship rewiring the thruster capacitors. Goddard is near her to hand her tools as she needs them.
Carla: OK, so me, you and a dog are gonna battle an alien civilization, right? (Carla looks up from the comic and turns to Jammy with trepidation on her face.) By ourselves? (Worry is etched in her voice. Jammy then comes out from under the rocket. She pets Goddard lovingly giving him lots of praise.)
Jammy: But he's a good dog. Aren't you, boy? (She says in a baby voice. Goddard wags his tail and barks happily.)
Carla: Hey, you know, the last time we tried this, Jam; we couldn't even break free of the atmosphere. (She asks in confusion making a very logical point.)
Jammy: I know, I know. (Jammy shakes her head in agreement understanding Carla's concern. Goddard goes and grabs the paneling that Jammy detached earlier to do the rewiring. She grabs it from Goddard.) But I recalculated the thrust-to-fuel ratio (Jammy puts the panel back on hammering it in place.) and I've adjusted the engine accordingly. (She dusts off her hands just as the rocket falls apart. Now usually her works hold up together for long periods of time and only have slight errors if any. However due to the need to leave asap and being the only one who can fix it, Jammy is making many errors causing setbacks with her rocket.) I can fix that.
Jammy points behind her with slight panic in her voice. She needs to work faster but trying to rebuild from scratch in such a short time frame isn't helping Jammy in the slightest. Her nerves are shot making for sloppy work. She sighs in defeat and frustration and looks to Goddard.
Jammy: Goddard, screwdriver please.
Goddard fetches a screwdriver from Jammy's toolbox and brings it to her. Before she can start someone calls out.
Nick: Jamicakes! (Jammy looks towards the voice. A bunch of the kids have formed an 'angry mob', carrying torches and groan loudly.)
Jammy: Gah! (She exclaims in shock as her eyes bulge. Jammy runs over to the shed where Carla was sitting and goes to hide behind it. Seeing Jammy running towards her, Carla stands up and questions her.)
Carla: What is it? (Jammy keeps running with Goddard following)
Jammy: An angry mob.
Carla: Aaahh! (Carla exclaims in fear as she drops the comic and runs after Jammy who's now behind the shed.)
We see the mob of kids holding their stomachs looking just as sickly as Jammy was when she woke up that morning. They slowly walk closer to where she's hiding. Jammy pops her head out to see the mob come closer. She gasps before retracting herself and turning to Carla.
Jammy: In times of crisis, intellectuals are always the first to go. It's been nice knowing you Carla. You're a true friend. I'm not going to have you be dragged down with me. (Jammy looks to Carla with determination and prepares to sacrifice herself to the mob before them. Carla walks up closer to Jammy ready to dissuade her friend. Before Jammy goes they both pop their heads out from behind the shed. Jammy has a look of panic while Carla has a look of skepticism.)
Carla: Um... Jammy I don't think you'll have to. Not like I would have let you anyway since I'd be right behind you, but they don't look angry. They look like they're about to barf.
The mob splits in half allowing for a pathway to appear. Nick is shown dragging Sheena by her forearm holding her firmly but careful not to hurt her.
Sheena: No me toca! Let me go. You're messing with powers far beyond your mortal comprehension, mi amigos, I'm...
Nick: OK, Jamicakes. Ultra-Freak here says you really know what happened to all our parents. (Nick says while gesturing to all the kids that were there.)
Sheena: Hey, Jammy, cómo estás? No dije nada about our parents being abducted by ali... (Sheena says a little sheepish switching between her two languages before being interrupted by Sydney.)
Sydney: Where's my mom and dad? (He questions while crossing his arms over his chest.)
The mob starts talking over each other. Their voices merge together, and Jammy can feel the pressure of a headache begin to form. She whistles loudly to get the mobs attention.
Jammy: People! If you'd please! I'll tell you as long as you all be quiet! (Jammy shouts above them. All of a sudden it's completely quiet. Everyone is in shock by the girl in front of them. They had never once heard her raise her voice like that before. Not even Sheena and Carla who had been friends with Jammy ever since she moved to Retroville in the third grade.) Thank you. Now as to what happened to our parents. It may come as a shock to most of you but simply put, an alien race has abducted them. To do what, I currently don't know. What I do know is this, if they have taken our parents it can't be good.
The mob murmurs between themselves. Some words that can be heard are things like 'Aliens!', "Will they come back?', "I can't believe it.' Once the crowd had hushed again Jammy stands in the center of them trying to stay calm and collected.
Jammy: Goddard, Star map 72, please.
Goddard barks in acknowledgement. Goddard shows a star map.
Jammy: Right about... there. (Jammy points somewhere on the star map to a distant solar system. All the kids stare at the map in awe.) Long-range sensors picked up these ion trails, indicating the departure route for whatever alien intelligence abducted our parents. As you can see, they lead us somewhere in the Orion star system approximately (Jammy does an 'about' hand gesture to estimate.) three million light years away. So we'll need to leave by Friday. (She begins pacing and verbalizing mental notes for her developing plan.) OK, that gives us about 2 days to collect the necessary plutonium, design and test our fusion engines, and build our fleet of interstellar warships. And we'll also need to bring snacks. (Jammy turns to the calmed mob.) Any questions?
Everyone stares in silence unable to speak. Goddard turns his star map off before nudging Jammy's leg to be pet. Jammy kneels before showering Goddard with well-deserved belly rubs.
Jammy: Good job, boy! Thanks for the map!
Jammy kisses the top of Goddard's head then stands up. Nick pushes his way to the front of the group very skeptical.
Nick: Are you sure about this, Jamicakes?
Jammy turns to Nick raising up a data sheet that she had in her pocket.
Jammy: Well, the data seems to support this hypothesis.
Sheena walks up to Jammy and takes the data sheet.
Sheena: Never argue with the data. (Sheena looks over the data trying to interpret the results however she gets highly confused from the information.)
Nick: OK, Jamicakes, here's the lowdown. (Nick points to Jammy.) You get us to those kidnapping alien scuzzballs, and (He points to himself.) I'll take it from there. We're getting our parents back. (Nick proclaims with great determination.)
The kids then cheer in support of the plan to get their parents back. The kids begin to leave Jammy's backyard, but Nick stays back. He starts walking closer to Jammy and whispers so no one else can hear.
Nick: Great plan Jammy! You definitely had a powerful presence. No one could take their eyes off you.
Nick praises as he winks at her with the last comment. Jammy blushes at Nicks words. She starts twirling her hair around her finger shyly.
Jammy: Thanks Nick! Hopefully everyone is able to keep on schedule so that we can leave when I said.
Hearing a familiar voice Goddard looks to where Jammy is and sees Nick. Grumbling to himself Goddard comes up beside Jammy and glares at Nick. Jammy then looks off into space lost in her thoughts. Goddard growls lowly in warning making sure Jammy wasn't paying attention. Not wanting to push his luck Nick decides to make his retreat. Jammy looks to Goddard bewildered as once again Nick seemed to leave for no reason. Goddard looks back at Jammy and barks in victory. Jammy just shrugs it off and heads to bed. Goddard follows her keeping an eye out for a certain black haired punk in case he decided to come back.
The next morning at 7 A.M. all the kids make their way to Retroland to put Jammy's plan into action.
Jammy: Alright people we have a short time frame and a lot of work to do. I'll split you up into groups so we can get done on time. (Jammy proceeds to point in the crowd of kids splitting them up.) Group Alpha will disassemble the rides. Group Beta will Group Gamma will go in between groups to pass out tools that are needed. Group Delta will collect spare parts. Group Epsilon will add attach my modified parts to our rockets. I'll go to every section as needed to give advice and help out when I'm available. Now let's go people!
We now switch over to seeing a kid unscrewing the Ferris wheel. The camera pans out to where we see other kids moving tools and equipment to help build the rockets. Ben is motioning for a thruster to be lowered into position as another kid stands on the ride ready to attach it.
Jammy: OK, Ben, that's good. Let it down slow. (Jammy walks off with Goddard checking the other kids progress. She looks up from her clipboard and sees Emma. Jammy pauses before guiding Emma on what to do.)
Jammy: Two more turns, Emma. Not too tight.
Jammy then continues on her route. Emma tries to tighten the bolt to one of the rockets as Jammy directed. Jammy makes it about a 100 feet before she stops by a rocket that has tape binding a thruster to it. Jammy flicks the tape to check for adhesion acceptability.
Jammy: Yup. Tape adhesion is within operational limits. (She glances at Goddard who shakes his head in agreement. Jammy then looks up and sees Sydney and Berty.)
Jammy: Uugh! (She shouts in shock.) What? Sydney? Sydney, what did you do to that intergalactic starship?
Jammy whines a little bit disappointment. The ride was perfect before the two boys redecorated it. The previously feminine looking ride is now covered in basketball posters, football stickers, and racecar paraphernalia.
Sydney: We thought that the deep recesses of space could use a masculine touch. (He says looking smug to Jammy.)
Bertie: What do you think, Jammy? (He questions while displaying the rocket.)
Jammy: Yeah, it's OK, I guess. You kinda ruined it though.
Jammy whispers the last sentence slightly frustrated at the two boys. Jammy walks away looking at her clipboard and starts passing Sheena on an Ultra Lord ride. Sheena stands at the top and calls out.
Sheena: Hey, Jammy, do these fusion reactors need fuel rods? (She asks lifting up a fuel rod so Jammy can see.)
Jammy: Come on, Sheena. It's not rocket science. (She states in a factual tone.) You just have to... (She stops herself for a moment to think it over, surprised by Sheena's question.) Actually, I guess it is rocket science. *giggles* No fuel rods, Sheena (Jammy wags her finger playfully.) but good thinking! (She smiles at her friend.)
Sheena: Oh OK. (Sheena throws the fuel rod causing an explosion.) I was kinda surprised with myself. You know, especially since I'm horrible at science. But I do remember some things. *giggles*
Jammy: I know but still well done! (Jammy shakes her head playfully before walking off. She now goes to fix up her own rocket.)
Jammy chose to modify the Strato XL ride. She was glad that there wouldn't be much work needed to make it fly since the basic rocket structure was already formed.
Jammy: Ok, Goddard, let's get to work!
Goddard opens up his back where he retrieves the tools Jammy put in there. Grabbing a welders mask from Goddard, Jammy flips it on. Goddard lowers his own set of welders glasses. Jammy then lies on her back, underneath the ride and grabs a hand held metal cutting saw. Turning the power on, Jammy raised the saw to the belly of the rocket. The saw tore into the metal sending sparks everywhere. She cut it into a nice 2x2 square, allowing for her to modify the current rides wiring. Goddard hands Jammy a set of wire cutters. She starts crossing wires and attaching them to new locations. Jammy speeds on through fixing up her rocket. The last modification she had to do was add in her engine. With Goddard's help the two lift the engine into the proper cavity in the rocket. Jammy bolts in in tight before welding the panel back onto the rocket. Caked in grease and dirt, Jammy lifts herself off the ground wiping the sweat off of her brow. A pleased smile graces her face. Jammy dusts off her hands before calling out to the small crowd that had surrounded her.
Jammy: Good work people. I need to take a shower. I'll be back in about an hour. Everybody keep working on the minor details to finish up! Carla will be in charge while I'm gone.
Random boy: Hey! Why do you get to leave early?
The kids that were around the boy moved away so Jammy has a clear view of him. Jammy narrows her gaze on him while raising a single eyebrow.
Jammy: Simple, if you look around no-one else is caked in grim and oil. Obviously that means that someone else is, resulting in said person becoming filthy. Now we are traveling to the deep recesses of space and my as you can tell I need to get cleaned up. So unless you have the knowhow to navigate the galaxy and a plan to retrieve our parents, I suggest you shut up and leave me to get clean.
The kid goes to respond before looking sheepish and nodding his head in shame. Goddard proceeds to transform into his scooter mode. Jammy and Goddard left Retroland heading back to her house. It only took her 10 minutes to get home. She ran into her house, up to her bedroom and jumped into the shower. Once she was all clean, she went to her closet to put on new clothes. Taking a moment to herself Jammy goes over to her bookshelf. She sees a familiar picture frame on top. Jammy picks it up and goes to sit on her bed. Goddard jumps on the bed beside her and looks at the photo with her. A 9 year old Jammy stood with a huge smile on her face with her mom right behind her with both of her hands on her shoulders. Her dad was beside her mom having an arm around her waist. Jammy was wearing a white Jiu Jitsu outfit with a purple belt around her waist.
Jammy: You know, I remember when this photo was taken. It was the day I got my purple belt. Mama was so worried when I started but Daddy always thought I could do it. Too bad you weren't allowed to be there. You would've loved it. You should've heard Mama during the match. "Use the Kimura! Go baby!" That was probably one of the times I remember Mama actually proud and supportive of me. (A single tear falls from Jammy's eye. Goddard lays his head on Jammy's shoulder in comfort. Jammy wipes it away with the back of her hand.) Were gonna get them back. We have to. (Goddard barks in support.) Let's head back boy.
Jammy and Goddard make it back to Retroland with 10 minutes to spare. With the last bit of light left Jammy goes to paint up her rocket some. She places a familiar looking stencil design against her rocket before spray painting it.
Jammy: And for the final touch... (She rips the paper stencil off revealing her iconic neutron logo on her rocket. Jammy turns to look at Goddard proud of their progress. When darkness hits the kids gathered to the Whack-a-Tack while Jammy stands on the tack like a stage.) Good work, everybody. We're ready for intergalactic travel.
Nick: Jamicakes, this is gonna work, right? (Nick says doubtful.)
Sydney: Yeah, Jammy. What if it doesn't work? (He says while walking closer to the stage.)
Jammy: It will work! (Jammy passionately responds and almost falls off of the nail she's standing on.) I'm 95% sure it will.
Sydney: 95? (Sydney questions.)
Jammy: Yeah.
Sydney: Yeah, and the other 5%? (He asks sarcastically.)
Jammy looks a little hesitant and bites her lip a little. She really doesn't want to scare anyone, but they deserve to know of the possibilities.
Jammy: We blow up.
The kids gasp before murmur and look at one another with shocked expressions. Jammy tries to keep them all positive.
Jammy: But just a little. Look, a 95 is still an 'A'.
Nick nods his head in acceptance and agreement. He decided to take this as another opportunity to hit on Jammy while showing up Sydney.
Nick: Yeah, I can deal with that. I never got a 95 in my life. Besides I'm sure Jammy knows what she is doing.
He winks at Jammy making sure that Sydney saw it all. Sydney glares at Nick while Jammy blushes at the compliment. Jealous of Nick, Sydney has an idea to score a few points with Jammy. He speaks up gathering the attention of all the kids around.
Sydney: You heard the woman. Jammy's gotten us this far so let's take the next step. (He points to Jammy causing Nick to cross his arms not expecting Sydney to say anything. Sydney then smirks at Nick before continuing.) Stop sucking your thumbs and let's light this candle!
The kids fasten their seatbelts and safety bars. Sydney and Berty put on their headphones for communication. Sheena puts on her mask, and Carla uses her inhaler. Jammy and Goddard are in their rocket ship.
Jammy: Goddard, initiate launch sequence. (Goddard stands on the backseat of the rocket opening his mouth to 'speak'.)
Goddard: Please make sure seat belts are fastened and remember to keep your hands and arms inside the vehicles at all times.
Jammy inserts a quarter into her rockets attachment platform. The rocket thruster lights up and starts to fly. The "Bat Outa Heck" ride starts flying in the sky with Nick in it, as does the eyeballs from 'Eye in the Sky'. Sydney and Berty's intergalactic starship gains altitude, while the dragon boat ride starts spinning and flies out in the sky. The roller coaster rides down and flies out. Then, the Ferris wheel goes up and flies in the sky. The Octo-Puke ride starts spinning and flies out. Finally, the ride "Flutter By" spins. Carla screams as the butterfly lets go, and races off. Then, the rest kids' rides started flying. Jammy is flying in the lead. She looks behind her to see if everyone is together.
Jammy: Come on, everybody. Get in formation. (Not seeing Carla, she looks down to find her practically on the ground. Jammy grabs her headset and signals to Carla.) Carla, you're too low.
Carla: Come on, you stupid butterfly. (Carla's butterfly starts flying as well. All the kids rides are now flying high in the sky.)
Sheena: Go, Counterparts! Go!
Jammy: Hang on. We're passing through the stratosphere. Now the mesosphere. Entering ionosphere. (With each level of the atmospheric layers the rockets jump due to the change in altitude and temperature.)
Carla: Now I know why they all end in "phere"! (Carla half jokes but is also half serious.)
Jammy: This is it, baby. Engaging pulse rockets now. (Jammy pulls a lever on her rocket as everyone else copies her. All the rockets sputter off and begin falling back towards Earth. The kids start to scream in fear while Jammy talks to herself.)
Jammy: Come on, come on, come on, come on.
She closes her eyes tight, 'fingers crossed', as she hopes her calculations are right. All of a sudden all the rockets spur back to life. The kids cheer in elation. They fly off into space on their way to rescue their parents.
