One slow, gray, boring morning, when Fox Mulder was all alone in his basement office and eating a bag of M&Ms, he thought of something very, very important.
How did they get the peanut into the M&Ms?
At the moment Dana Scully walked into the office, and found her partner holding something tiny against the desk lamp light.
"Mulder, how come you're not trying to pick out an unsolved case so that we can go up and annoy Skinner?"
"I'm thinking of something really important," was Mulder's reply.
"Yeah? Like what?"
"Like how did they get the peanut into the M&Ms."
"Well that's not hard Mulder. Here, let me show you—"
But Scully's demonstration was interrupted before it could start when Monica Reyes walked into the office.
"What are you guys talking about?" Monica asked curiously.
"M&Ms. Scully was going to show me how they get the peanut into the little candy." Mulder replied. "But you interrupted her before she could start!"
Monica glared at Mulder, and Mulder glared back. Scully looked vexed.
"Now people, as I was saying—"
And then John Doggett just picked the right moment to walk into the office.
"You got that report ready Mon? I think Skinner's ready to kill the four of us."
Before Monica could reply, Scully started up again. "As I was saying, they take the peanut—"
Then Walter Skinner's head appeared in the doorway. "Agents Doggett and Reyes, I want that report now!"
"Just a moment, sir," Doggett said, "Agent Scully is just about to explain how they got the peanut into the M&Ms."
"Really?" Skinner seemed interested. "Then let's hear it."
"Thank you sir," Scully said gratefully. "As I was saying, they—"
And then Alex Krycek just happened to wander into the office.
Mulder bolted up from his chair and pointed a finger dramatically at Krycek. "ALEX KRYCEK!"
And Krycek pointed a finger dramatically at Mulder. "FOX MULDER!"
And they both pulled out their guns and fired at each other, but missed.
So, Mulder got out from behind his desk, and chased Krycek into the corridor, up the stairs, and to wherever they ended up being.
Monica, John, Scully and Skinner stood on the spot and stared at each other. Finally Skinner cleared his throat loudly and said, "So, where's the report?"
Monica snatched a folder from her desk and handed it to Skinner.
"Well then agents," Skinner continued, "If you need to bother me with another unsolved case, just remember I'll be in my office."
And then he walked out into the corridor, got into the elevator, and returned to his office with a thoughtful expression on his face.
When he walked into his office, the first thing he said to his secretary was,
"Do you know how did they get the peanuts into the M&Ms?"
