Disclaimer: I am only playing in Tolkien's sandbox.
AN: I got this idea while driving home yesterday. Where I live we have had nothing but rain for almost two months. Getting sick of it really. In May we only had FOUR days without rain. They had announced that on the local news. I am really beginning to hate rain.
Rainbow
The Fellowship was cold, tired, and miserable. They were making their way slowly through some rocky outcroppings at the base of the Misty Mountains. It wasn't raining but a heavy mist seemed to hang in the air. It made for miserable traveling conditions. Gandalf had decided to keep everyone moving dispite the protests from the younger hobbits. It was near midday when the sun decided to peek through the clouds. It did not offer much warmth but the sight of it was welcomed.
Legolas was scouting up ahead, leaping from boulder to boulder, when he suddenly froze. His normally compliant mask slipped as a smile graced his features. Without looking away from the object of his intrest he called back to Strider in elvish. "Aragorn there is something you must see."
Strider glanced around them warily before calling back to the elf in Sindarian. "What do your elf eyes see?"
"Eru is smiling down on us." Legolas answered still in his native tongue.
"What does the elf see?" Boromir asked noticing the frown on Strider's face.
Strider shrugged. "I do not know. He said that Eru is smiling down on us."
"Confounded elves and their blasted riddles." Gimli grumphed.
"Let us see what the elf has found shall we?" Gandalf smiled leading the group around the boulders.
The fellowship circled the large stones warily prepared for the worst. They were pleasantly surprised to find part of a rainbow shimmering above the ground. It stood roughly twice the height of Aragorn and it was about three hobbits wide. The colors shifted constantly and were bright and vibrant.
Pippin with a grin raced towards the bright colors and he stood within the rainbow. Pippin raised his hands to the sky with a joyful shout. The other hobbits soon joined their younger brethren filling the area with laughter as they played within the colors. The rest of the Fellowship joined them rather more slowly as they were struck with wonder at the site.
Aragorn ran his hand under the bright arch watching his skin reflect the myraid of color. He felt Legolas step up beside him and watched as the elf touched the rainbow almost shyly. Aragorn's voice was filled with wonder as he asked in the common tongue. "Have you ever seen anything like this Legolas?"
Legolas shook his head. "Not in all the years I have walked the earth have I ever been able to touch the colored mantle. We have been blessed."
"I wish that we could take a piece of this with us." Sam said thoughtfully.
Gimli nodded beside him as he watched the shimmering colors. "If I could capture this in a cyrstal it would be a gem without price."
"It would be a true work of art Master Gloin." Gandalf replied. "Come, we should depart. We still have a long way to go."
"Let us stay here for a bit Gandalf." Merry pleaded. "Do we have to leave here already?"
Gandalf's face softened as he looked at the four pleading hobbit faces. "We will take a rest here, then. Sam would you start a hot lunch for everybody?"
Camp was set up quickly and soon the smell of stew lingered in the air. The whole time the rainbow shimmered within the camp. The hobbits were quite taken with the colors, repeatedly running through them. The camp was filled with light and laughter and the oppressive feeling that had been dominating the Fellowship all but disappeared.
They lingered in the rainbow's presence for about an hour. Finally they began packing to resume their journey. As the last of the members walked away the rainbow shimmmered and disappeared.
