A single shot rang out. It was the shot the started all of the melee

that would plague the Rangers for four horrifying hours. A store clerk

had been tending to his register when he had been robbed and held at

gunpoint. A Dallas PD sniper was ordered to take the shot and he did.

The single shot echoed through the parking lot. The bullet, however,

missed its target by two inches and the standoff turned deadly. The

robber shot his hostage, killing him, and took another one of the store

customers as his new human shield.

After a few minutes two trucks pulled in. Two 1998 Dodge Rams. The

Texas Rangers had arrived. A total of three Rangers stepped from the

trucks. Sergeant Cordell Walker, Sergeant James Trivette, and Lieutenant

James Graff. They stepped up to the person in charge.

Graff spoke, "Captain, what do we have here?"

The captain replied, "Hostage situation. Robbery gone bad. Clerk is

dead. Our sniper missed. We're going to try negotiation this time."

Graff drew his pistol and stood behind the door of his nearby truck.

Negotiation would fail, Graff knew that, so did Walker and Trivette.

"What do you think, Graff?" Walker asked.

"Its going to be a long day, Walker," Graff replied.

Trivette spoke, "Do you think the negotiations will work?" In his

heart Trivette knew that they wouldn't.

Graff sighed. "No, they will eventually need the sniper to take

another shot and that sniper will only miss again. Then the police will

storm the store and a few will die before they finally get to him."

Walker spoke now, "You're going to take the shot?"

Graff nodded then said, "Once they tell the PD sniper to, I will

override their decision and take the shot mysaelf."

Four hours later the standoff was still going strong and the criminal

was still indignant in his decision on what he wanted. The PD sniper

was ordered to take the shot, but Walker stopped him.

Walker said to the captain, "Captain, Lieutenant Graff is going to

take the shot. Jurisdiction."

The captain could only nod in assent and told his sniper to stand

down and looked at Graff who was leaning over his hood with the 308

caliber rifle resting on a bi-pod aiming into the stoor.

The rifle rang out and this time it was the bullet ended it all as

it struck the criminal right in the head and he pitched backword and

lost all control on life. His hostages ran from the building.

Another mass death toll averted by the Texas Rangers on that hot day

in the state of Texas.
