Lucy Diamond Dawson sat with boxes in front of her. She was eighteen years
old and finally getting a place of her own. Rita had made a big deal about
how cluttered Lucy's apartment would be so she'd made Lucy promise to look
through the boxes. Determine what could be kept and what could get thrown
out. The first box held only pictures. Lucy was about to push it aside,
when one picture caught her eye. It was her and her father on the swings at
Winter Park. They were looking into each others eyes, smiling broadly. It
was the happiest they would be for a long time. Why couldn' things have
stayed that way?
*I still remember the world*
*Through the eyes of a child*
*Slowly those feelings*
*Were clouded by what I know now*
She set the picture down and pulled the next one out of the box. It was her second grade Halloween party. She'd been dressed in pink. With a tiara and wings, like a fairy princess. He'd been dressed like John Lennon, or oneof the Beatles. She couldn't remember which. She winced and her eyes stung with tears unshed. It wasn't the memory in particular, but the picture that hurt. Her father was dancing, smiling happily, while she was looking up at him as though she didn't know him as her friends pointed and laughed. One tear slid slowly down her cheek.
*Where has my heart gone*
*An uneven trade for the real world*
*I want to go back to*
*Believing in everything*
*And knowing nothing at all*
Up until she'd hit the ripe old age of eight, her father had been her world. Her everything. Up until she'd legally become older than him.
*I still remember the sun*
*Always warm on my back*
*Somehow it seems colder now*
She looked at the second picture again before slowly ripping it in half. She ripped it again and again, the tears falling faster and faster, until there was nothing left. Exhausted, she picked up the picture of her and her father in the park. "I love you daddy." She whispered, before dropping it back into the box.
*Where has my heart gone*
*Trapped in the eyes of a stranger*
*I want to go back to*
*Believing in everything*
*I still remember the world*
*Through the eyes of a child*
*Slowly those feelings*
