Chapter 1

Everyday since they can remember Arnold and Gerald have walked to school together, so when Gerald heard a knock on his front door he wasn't surprised to see Arnold there. After saying Good-bye to his parents, Gerald headed out the door to join Arnold, who had already started towards school sine they were late. But what they would find at school would make their lives a whole lot better.

When they got there they were surprised to see the whole school transformed into what they thought looked like a carnival but when they asked their teacher, Mr. Simmons "What was going on? He replied, " We are having a sports day and there is no school." Gerald was happy but Arnold was confused so he asked, "Why do we need a sports day?" Mr. Simmons said, "It's a chance to sign up for a sports club so that you can remain healthy and active."

So they walked around and looked at the many clubs and after a while Gerald decided that he really wanted to be in the basketball club but Arnold wanted to try something new so he decided to sign up for the tennis club. Later that day when they were eating lunch, Gerald asked, "Which club did you sign up for?" Arnold replied, " I signed up for tennis? Gerald exclaimed "WHAT! Why?" Arnold said, "Because I felt like trying some new sport and I think you should join me." But Gerald gave him a look of "Are you serious?" and of course Arnold knew what that look meant and said, "Yes I am.'

After some convincing, Gerald said that he would join the tennis club and cancel being in the basketball club. So they went to both clubs and Gerald signed his name at the tennis booth and crossed out his name at the basketball booth and they headed home.

The next day after school they walked to the nearby tennis courts where a coach was standing and talking to a group of kids with a cart full of rackets and balls behind him and upon arriving they noticed that most of their classmates were there. They saw Helga, Phoebe, Rhonda, Patty, Nadine, Sheena, Lila, Sid, Lorenzo, Brainy, Harold, Eugene, Stinky and a sixth grader named Maria.

The coach introduced himself as John Adamson and said he was going to teach them the game of tennis and told them to take a racket and line up across the net from him and he would see what their style was like.

After a couple of hours of drills and lessons he said that practice was over and that he would see them all tomorrow at the same time but as they were leaving he said, "Oh I almost forgot, there is going to be a tournament at PS 118 and you are going to play in it against one another and I will make the bracket of who you'll play but you won't find out until the day of the tournament." With that everyone headed to their houses.
