And This is A Beautiful Way

Sometimes Severus would meet him in the morning, as a bird on the water, as a swelling harmony. They would not speak, for no words were needed in this place of unlife and undeath -- only a nod, only a chord, only a southwest breeze ruffling the trees in North Scotland. Only a good-bye.
More often they would meet at dusk, among the rain clouds that hadn't yielded to November's gold of sunset. The time-between-times, the time when the skies were opened, if only for the briefest moment. Then Severus would stand patiently on the moor, alone. Perhaps he closed his eyes. Often he swayed as if he could not keep his footing. His companion never asked him what he saw; there was no need -- the tears told everything.
He remembered the darkness beneath the wings of the shadow, the dawn that never came. He remembered dry leaves, and her body, and her soul. He remembered the night's stars shining thinly, broken and bleeding like the slim cuts in his body on the night the world gave way.
And every twilight, without fail, he wondered whether he was in heaven or in hell. He did not know, and it did not matter...all was hell after he saw the white of her lips, her still chest. He couldn't know that far away, a solitary figure whispered his name to the waters of a lake, another laid pallid flowers covered in tears on his grave, and countless others slept peacefully because of him. Even if he had known, he would not have cared. In living he had killed her, in dying he had saved her, and all his thoughts were Hermione.

Notes: I know, it's about as short as they come, but a little Severus/Hermione drabble never hurt anyone, did it? A longer SS/HG piece is in the works, which will be posted on both Fanfiction.Net and FictionAlley.Org.
Reviews are appreciated.
