Tales of the Slayer - Anna
Anna looked through the window in her German class. The teacher was revising with the students about the colours in German, but all Anna could do was look out of the window.
"Grun," said Mrs Evans holding up a picture of a green lawn.
The sun had lit up everything outside, however the grass had turned a straw coloured brown rather than the bright green in the picture. Even if it was only April, the day was growing warmer and warmer as if it was summer. Glancing to the clock and back outside Anna could tell there were only 20 minutes left of the school day.
"Gelb," said Mrs Evans holding up a picture of a tall sunflower.
Anna sighed. The clock said 19 minutes left. The day had had an overwhelming atmosphere of strangeness. It was as if she had forgotten something she needed at school. But here she was at the end of the day with everything she needed.
"Blau," said Mrs Evans holding up a picture of the sea and the sky.
Finally, after the clock dragged on and on the school bell rang with three short rings and the students all streamed out of their class rooms, into the bright sunlight. Walking to the front of the school through the playground and back into the cafeteria passing the school's office Anna met up with her friends. They were all going to the students café in town which had recently been set up for people of her age. They all walked there, almost identically, with their school ties hanging out of their bags and the top two buttons of their shirts undone and walking arm in arm or texting other friends on their mobiles they walked the short distance to school.
"Hey guys, not meaning to alarm you but I think we are being followed," Emily said. "Don't all turn around at the same time! Just walk a bit quicker."
They weren't in any immediate danger as there were many cars around and many more school children. Anna risked a quick glance behind her and saw an oldish man in brown trousers and a terrible matching brown jacket with a black shirt on. "Gosh, he must be hot," she thought.
As they walked into town they headed straight for the café and felt a sigh of relief go around as they entered the cool air of the air conditioned room. The man had continued walking past. Finding a booth they sat down as a girl they recognised from their sixth form came over to serve them. After giving their orders Megan said to Emily,
"I think someone's a bit paranoid today." Emily and Abi laughed. Anna forced a weak smile, but the strange feeling that she couldn't describe was still with her.
"You hear all sorts of things on the TV now a days about strange people, it can't hurt to be a bit aware," replied Emily.
"That's true," continued Anna. "Why do you think my Mum is only happy when Jack walks me home?"
Their orders of ice creams in tubs arrived and they started eating in silence. Leaving the café Anna's friends were discussing shopping around town, not that their small town had much in it to shop in. Anna looked at the town hall clock and decided to go home. Waving bye to her friends she began the twenty minutes walk. Enjoying the warmth on her shoulders and the friendly smile of the Pansies as she walked past, Anna was completely lost in thought and did not hear the footsteps behind her, however she did feel the hand on her shoulder which turned her around. It was the gentleman again.
"Anna Smith?"
"Yes, have we met?"
"Nope, but what I am about to tell you is very important and could save your life."
"My life.?"
"You are the Chosen One. You alone can stop them. No one else in the World as powerful as you."
Anna ran.
